Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish the quote: "What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't_________."

Answer: reach

"Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week. Which is the way he wants it, well he gets it, and I don't like it anymore than you men." Strother Martin, as "the Captain", delivered this speech when Luke was brought back to the gang after his first escape attempt.
2. What song did Luke sing when he heard of his mother's death?

Answer: Plastic Jesus

With tears rolling down his cheeks, Luke sat on the edge of his bunk with his banjo, and sang "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I got my plastic Jesus." It was never mentioned exactly how Arletta, Luke's mother, died. When Arletta came to visit Luke she was obviously very ill.

It can be assumed that smoking may have been the cause since she had a very scratchy voice and often had coughing fits.
3. Who was NOT a character from the movie?

Answer: Bagman

Surprisingly no one had the name Bagman. The character Dynamite, played by Buck Kartalian, was hardly ever seen, but his name was mentioned several times. Loudmouth Steve, who was also called Stevie, was played by Robert Drivas. Tramp, played by Harry Dean Stanton, was one of the new inmates, called "new-meat", that came in with Luke.
4. Why did Luke say he wanted to eat fifty eggs?

Answer: it'd be something to do

Dragline asks "Luke that's money you're talking about, now what's a matter with you?". Luke says "Yeah well, it'd be something to do." Luke finds a way for every cent in camp to be put in a gambling ring, without betting any of his own money. Luke manages to swallow the last egg at the last second.

As a result, Luke becomes like the gang's "bank" allowing others to take out loans since he, Dragline, and KoKo now have all the camp's money. It is never stated who bet for or against Luke, but when the inmates are asking for money, Luke, Dragline, and KoKo are the ones at the table handling the money.
5. What was Luke's brother's name?

Answer: John

John, who was played by John Pearce, brought their mother to the camp to visit Luke. It can be assumed that Arletta was making this trip in order to see Luke one last time. At one point in the visit she stated, "I ain't asking what you're gonna do when you get out, cause I'll be dead and it don't matter". Luke and John barely spoke to each other.

The only words spoken between the two is at the end of Luke's visit with his mother. John handed Luke a banjo and said, "Now there ain't nothing to come back for".
6. After Luke escaped the second time he sent the men a magazine featuring himself with two ladies. Where was that magazine sent from?

Answer: Atlanta

Dragline asked, "Hey KoKo who sent me a magazine"? KoKo responded, "Don't know, it's from Atlanta". The inmates went wild seeing Luke with two beautiful women, and wanted Dragline to show them the picture many times. When Luke was caught and brought back to the camp, he stated that the "picture's a phony," and that it cost him a week's pay to have it done.
7. Who was the character that normally fetched water for the gang?

Answer: Rabbitt

"Hey Rabbitt, water-em down". We often saw Rabbit, who was played by Marc Cavell, walking around with the water bucket, or running to give Boss Godfrey his rifle. It is never mentioned why Rabbitt was the one responsible for these errands.
8. What was the gang's "reward" for doing "so good?"

Answer: tar and sand a road

Boss Paul, played by Luke Askew, told the gang, "This gang's been doing so good, the captain decided to give you something special. You got a whole road of tarring to do. And I wanna see you roll it." The new job for the gang was to follow a tar truck and throw sand on a newly tarred road.
9. What did Dragline name the woman who washed her car in front of the gang?

Answer: Lucille

As the gang was digging in a ditch, a blonde woman walked out to her car with soap, sponge, a bucket and a hose. She then proceeded to wash her car, giving the inmates quite a show.
10. Which actor won an Academy Award for his role in "Cool Hand Luke"?

Answer: George Kennedy

George Kennedy won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dragline. Paul Newman was nominated for Best Actor, but the award went to Rod Steiger for "In the Heat of the Night". Other movie credits for George Kennedy are "The Naked Gun," "The Dirty Dozen," and "The Human Factor".
