Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which legendary actor portrayed Paul Biegler?

Answer: James Stewart

This was one of Stewart's best performances and was an early version of the lawyer he would portray later on the "Hawkins" TV series. Stewart was nominated for Best Actor but lost to Charlton Heston. He did win the New York Critics Best Actor Award.
2. The actress that portrayed Laura Manion, the rape victim in the film.

Answer: Lee Remick

Lee Remick is great as the vunerable but flirty wife of an army lieutenant.
3. What year was the film released in the United States?

Answer: 1959

The film gained $5.5 million at the box office in the U.S. The premiere was attended by many legendary stars including Kirk Douglas, Shirley MacLaine and Dean Martin. It was a controversial film due to the subject matter (rape, sperm, and murder). It was one of the last films to be filmed in black and white.

The film was banned in Chicago by Mayor Daley, in Jimmy Stewart's hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania (his father lobbied for the ban after he received numerous calls about his son's "dirty" picture.

The film was also banned in South Africa because of a scene which shows Jimmy Stewart and Duke Ellington playing a song together on the piano. It is now considered one of the best courtroom dramas of all time.
4. Duke Ellington provided the score for the film.

Answer: True

Although an odd choice for a sophisticated courtroom drama, he did an excellent job with the score of the film.
5. Which US state was the movie filmed in?

Answer: Michigan

Iron City, Michigan was picked for the filming partly because the author of the novel called it home. The production crew did about five weeks of shooting mostly exterior shots in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Some of the locations filmed were the courthouse, jail, the Timber Ridge Lodge (Thunder Bay Inn was the name in the film), and the house of the author of the novel which is Paul Biegler's family home in the film.

While in Michiagn, the cast was more than happy to give onlookers a chance to see a production of the film, and some were even picked to be extras.

The cast was also gracious enough to give autographs and take pictures with the star-struck fans. The courtroom scenes were filmed in California.
6. Who portrayed the defendant, Lt. Manion?

Answer: Ben Gazarra

This portrayal was very well done by Ben Gazarra especially in the company of such greats as Jimmy Stewart, George C. Scott, Arthur O'Connell and Eve Arden. He was a jealous and enraged man but could have a soft heart in some cases.
7. The "legal excuse" accepted in the defense of Lt. Manion.

Answer: irresistible impulse

Irresistible impulse otherwise known as dissociative reaction means that he was not fully there during the shooting of Barney Quill and that he didn't know the difference between right and wrong at the time. It was a sore excuse at the beginning of the case, but as more details came out and evidence was found that Michigan had excepted "irresistible impulse" as an excuse, the defense found their case.
8. What was Barney Quill's relationship with Mary Pilant?

Answer: father

Mary Pilant came into the case later, but proved to be a valuable asset to the defense. It was known around town that Pilant and Quill were close and the rumor was they were lovers. Parnell, the friend and later associate of Biegler, proves otherwise. Pilant was the daughter of Barney Quill.
9. How many Oscars was the film nominated for?

Answer: 7

The film was nominated for Best Picture, Actor (Stewart), Supporting Actor (O'Connell and Scott), Screenplay, Black and White Cinematography and Film Editing. Unfortunately it did not win any Oscars.
10. What item of women's clothing does Jimmy Stewart hold up in the courtroom?

Answer: panties

The panties of Laura Manion were torn during her rape. A doctor had examined her and told her she had not been raped. Laura Manion testifies about the panties but isn't positively sure she was wearing any that night. Mary Pilant worked and lived at the Thunder Bay Inn and helped sort laundry.

She testifies that she found a pair of torn panties, but threw them in the rag bin. After hearing the testimony of Laura Manion, Pilant brought the panties to the courtroom, the exact ones that Manion had described in previous testimony.
