Question 1 of 10
1. This third movie in a series was released about 16 years after the second one had appeared in theaters and ultimately the Oscar receiving lines. Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, what movie failed to live up to the success of the other two? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The original came out in 1984 and would end up the highest grossing comedy movie of the 1980s. This sequel came out five years later. It would have the biggest 3-day opening in history, but critics' reviews were flat. What movie returned to us to the exploits of Peter, Ray, Egon and Dana? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The fourth installment of this movie franchise came out in 2009, six years after the third movie and a full 25 years after the original. The film didn't involve the original writer and director of the first two, and was the first not to feature the actor who played the title role, instead hinging its star power on Christian Bale. What was the name of this fourth movie? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The first movie in the series came out in 1980, and became a cult classic, becoming one of the most successful movies to come from the countless "Saturday Night Live" characters developed over the years. The sequel came 18 years later, with only one of the two actors playing the title characters still living, and a lifeless script seemingly only designed around songs the cast wanted to sing. What was this sequel that should have stayed unmade? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Collectively the first three movies in this franchise, beginning in 1977, grossed a billion dollars. A 16 year hiatus until the next film brought the public one of the first uses of the word "prequel" in 1999. While it was destined to make tons of money based on the name alone, it is universally looked at as the worst of the franchise even after two more movies followed it. What is the title of this fourth movie, or first depending on who you talk to? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. From the point this franchise reinvented itself in 1989, the following sequels gained less and less gross profits. With the fourth movie in question, critics and fans everywhere revolted. With the third actor in four films in line to play the title role, and a different director from the first two films, all ideas thought promising while shooting were met with ridicule and scorn upon release. What was this sequel that missed the collaboration of Michael Keaton and Tim Burton? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The first movie in what would end up being a trilogy was credited as revolutionizing filmmaking for the future, and it brought us an entire new world to us complete with groundbreaking special effects. But the final film of the trilogy had most of the public wishing Neo had just swallowed the blue pill in the first movie instead. What was the name of this third movie in the series? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The original paired an actor with dancing skills with an innocent Australian singer and made a Broadway hit into an iconic movie musical masterpiece. Then came the sequel. Set only two years after the first, it ended up being a thrown together mess with very little good v. evil tension, and even less sexual tension between its leads. Looking back, the only good thing movie fans say came out of the movie was it introduced us to Michelle Pfeiffer. What was this dog of a sequel that should have stayed unfilmed? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Will Ferrell created a character on screen in 2004 that originally didn't explode with the viewing public, failing to earn $100 million. But the continued word of mouth and the DVD release got the picture viewed by many and it has become a comedy classic. He followed it up nine years later with a sequel that didn't live up to the original standards, and left a little tarnish on the original. What was the name of this movie sequel? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. In 1980, an infinitely quotable movie that "Time Magazine" and ESPN have called the funniest sports movie of all time was released. In 1988 an infinitely forgettable movie was its sequel. Bringing back only Chevy Chase to star in the sequel, what sequel had movie producers wish they had their film back? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This third movie in a series was released about 16 years after the second one had appeared in theaters and ultimately the Oscar receiving lines. Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, what movie failed to live up to the success of the other two?

Answer: The Godfather, Part III

According to Carmela Soprano from "The Sopranos", "Three was like, what happened?". What happened was Coppola and original book writer Mario Puzo got together to write the script but reported to do continual rewrites even while shooting was going on. The result was a disjointed mess that didn't seem to know where it was going, and for a movie that needs to finish a beloved storyline, you need to know your destination before taking off.

The other was casting Coppola's daughter in the movie before she was ready to put her craft up against multiple Oscar winners.

While a successful movie, most "Godfather" fans tend to not mention the movie in discussions about the series.
2. The original came out in 1984 and would end up the highest grossing comedy movie of the 1980s. This sequel came out five years later. It would have the biggest 3-day opening in history, but critics' reviews were flat. What movie returned to us to the exploits of Peter, Ray, Egon and Dana?

Answer: Ghostbusters II

All of these are from movie franchises that director and producer Ivan Reitman had a hand in, but "Ghostbusters II" is the movie in question. The original cast was not interested in a sequel but pressure from the studio made it happen. It only held the three-day record for one week as Tim Burton's "Batman" opened with a larger gross. Effectively rehashing the similar jokes and plot designs, it failed to gross half of what the original did stateside.

Answer: Terminator Salvation

The movie received more press for its development than for the movie itself, being infamous for Bale's "OHHH, Go-o-d For You!" tirade during filming. Collectively the movie received a ton of average reviews, which at times can be worse than a bunch of bad reviews, because that usually means the movie isn't memorable. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor who played the title role in the first three movies, was only reproduced via CGI effects which lent to many of the critics stating that the movie lacked the heart of the first two movies.

"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" was a step down from the original two, not being able to bring back Linda Hamilton (who played the female lead, Sarah Connor in the first two), but with "Salvation" you lost almost all of what tied you to the first two movies.

Answer: Blues Brothers 2000

John Belushi, Jake Blues in the first film, died from drug abuse in 1982, which left only Dan Aykroyd to play Elwood Blues. The new script wrote in some relations to other characters from the original movie to fill Belushi's void, but the unpredictable campiness of Jake and Elwood's original shtick felt forced with John Goodman and Joe Morton attempting to capture the same spark. With Chicago shutting its doors to in-city filming, the stunts that looked raw and primal in the original movie looked sterile in the sequel.

At a budget of $28 million, it only brought back half that domestically.

Answer: Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace

All of the subtitles are from movies in the franchise, but the one in question is "The Phantom Menace". We are introduced to Darth Vader as a young boy, played by Jake Lloyd, as well as a character named Jar Jar Binks. Much of the public saw Jar Jar as a poor attempt at comic relief, and few were mesmerized by Jake Lloyd's ability to capture a scene. And with technology able to recreate much of the scenes on a computer, the primal rawness from the originals had disappeared.

But it was true fans who looked upon the Jedi and the Force as something attainable by anyone who can just feel it around them and believe that were most blindsided.

They were introduced to the existence of midichlorians, a biological element required for the transference of the Force.

The magic of the Force was now lost to science. And with it, much of the "magic" of the movies to come was lost as well.

Answer: Batman and Robin

George Clooney helmed the batsuit for this fourth in the Warner Brothers series, a batsuit complete with nipples this time around. This was one of many issues the public had with the movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as Mr. Freeze, was given an interminable amount of one-liners to say in hopes to strike movie quote gold like many of his other films. And the fight sequences so rivaled the original Batman series in the 1960s in their camp, one expected the word "KAPOW!" to appear on the screen at some point. Clooney still holds a pic of himself in the bat suit on his office wall, to remind him not to take a project strictly for the cash.

He also vowed to never appear as Batman again, effectively ending the franchise for Warner Brothers.

Answer: The Matrix Revolutions

The first film, "The Matrix", brought some brand new filmmaking techniques that left much of the public's jaws dropping. But the next movie, "The Matrix Reloaded", leaned on more advanced filming sequences, forsaking some plot and character development.

By the time the anticlimactic third movie, "The Matrix Revolutions", came out, many fans weren't really interested in the alternate universe the main character Neo had discovered by swallowing the red pill in the first movie. Had he stuck with the blue pill, the general public would have not been taken on the long journey with little fanfare at the end.

Answer: Grease 2

It seemed as if all the cast groups - teachers, jocks, greasers, all of them - all went to the same side. None of the characters were shocked by any behavior, and everyone got along. And the general plot of the movie hinged on how long would the girl take to discover that the guy riding his motorcycle doing stunts in a mask (!) is the quiet preppie she sees in school. And while "Grease" has several songs that have stood the test of time, "Grease 2" has none.

This was Michelle Pfeiffer's first major film role, and she obviously found better material to work with later in her career.

Answer: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

The other answers are sequels that never happened. "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" has received several comedy accolades once the movie garnered such a cult following. While the sequel was a commercial success, it still left many fans of the original movie feeling like it wasn't necessary to make a sequel, that maybe it should have been left alone.

They managed to bring the entire cast back, and added some fresh faces for the changes in venue, but the cast had more fun making it than the collective audience had watching it.

Answer: Caddyshack 2

None of these sequels continued the success of their original, but most fans attest that "Caddyshack 2" was a hot mess of new epic proportions. The script was attributed to the writers of the original movie, but in reality was written by a host of writers.

Not bringing back Ted Knight, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray from the original cast took much of the funny away, too. Chevy Chase was the only one to come back, and stated later he regretted doing so. To top it off, the movie was written to get a PG rating, and that watered down much of the comedy. All in all, this ranks high on many of the sequel lists that had no business being made.
