Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jack Wyatt (played by Will Ferrell) was talked into doing the show to try and save a failing acting career. What was the name of the film that was frequently referred to as his big flop?

Answer: Last Year in Katmandu

Although his failing career could be blamed on more than one bad movie (in fact there were many people who obviously believed that he had no talent at all), only one title was ever specifically mentioned as being responsible for his being box office poison. "Last Year in Katmandu" was ridiculed by anyone who mentioned it, throughout the movie.
2. After being reminded by his agent (played by Jason Schwartzman) that the show's focus needed to be on Darren's character, Jack insisted on an unknown actress being cast in the role of Samantha. After auditions failed to produce anyone suitable, Jack found Isabel (played by Nicole Kidman) while she was reading a book off of a rack. Why did he think she was perfect for the part?

Answer: She could wiggle her nose.

While Isabel certainly resembled Elizabeth Montgomery in many scenes, she was not the spitting image of her. While she was reading a book off of the rack, she kept wiggling her nose, presumably because it was itchy. Jack could see her do this through the gap in the book rack, and was absolutely entranced by how well she did it. He did not know that she really was a witch.
3. While Isabel could wiggle her nose quite convincingly, as Elizabeth Montgomery did in the original series, this was not the movement that she used most often to perform her magic. Aside from her many hand movements, what did she do to perform her sorcery?

Answer: tug on her ear

She used this technique often enough that Iris Smythson (played by Shirley MacLaine), who played Endora on the remade show, picked up on it. Iris made a cryptic remark about it that led Isabel to initially suspect that Iris knew what she was doing. However when Isabel questioned her on what she'd said, she said that she was advising Isabel to watch that nervous twitch.
4. When Jack asked Isabel if she wanted to star in the show, she didn't feel she had the ability to act. His response, that if he could act she could do it, drew an amusing "Amen" from the waitress. What was Isabel's reaction when he talked about the show being a remake of "Bewitched"?

Answer: that she was never allowed to watch the show

Not understanding the reason why, Jack found the fact that she had never been allowed to watch the show quite amusing. However we later learn from her father's reaction (sardonically played by Michael Caine) that the show had been banned by witches because of the glib way that it treated the craft.
5. Dismayed that she was going to carry through with starring in this show, her father, Nigel Bigelow, kept turning up at odd moments to try and dissuade her. Where was one of the places she saw him when she was shopping for groceries?

Answer: as the Jolly Green Giant on a tin label

As Isabel was walking down the aisle, shopping for groceries, she first heard her father's voice, talking to her from a face on the label of a tin of vegetables. As she moved up the aisle, his face moved along on different products with her, until she finally encountered him in the flesh, standing further up in the aisle.
6. Who said, "Thank God you didn't have a Great Dane!"?

Answer: Isabel

After overhearing Jack discuss her intended role in the show, which was to be quiet and let him have all the lines, Isabel decided to wreak a little havoc. In one scene she, in the role of Samantha, was supposed to stand mutely at the side while Jack, in the role of Darren, and his ex-girlfriend argued over custody of the dog.

The dog was supposed to choose Darren, but after a little magic, he jumped into Samantha's arms instead. When they set up to re-shoot the scene, the scriptwriter passed Samantha the line to say, in case it happened again, which of course it did. Samantha began to become a favourite with the test audiences, which wasn't what was supposed to happen at all.
7. Whose late-night talk-show was Jack allegedly on when he walked out naked?

Answer: Conan O'Brien's

Jack was having a nightmare, brought on by the stress of finding out that Isabel really was a witch. During his dream, while waiting to be called onstage, he rehearsed a little speech about casting a witch to play a witch. He then walked out on stage, wearing only strategic blurring, and woke up with the audience's laughter ringing in his ears.

His stress was related to the fact that he had fallen in love with Isabel, and wasn't sure whether that was real, or whether she had actually bewitched him.
8. Who convinced Jack that he really did love Isabel?

Answer: Uncle Arthur

Jack's favourite character from the original show was Uncle Arthur (originally played by Paul Lynde). One night Uncle Arthur appeared to Jack and gave him the short version, "the long version was in Aramaic", on how to tell if he really loved Isabel, or if he was under a spell. Upon realizing that the love was real, Jack went tearing off to tell her, only to find that she had packed up and was gone. Fortunately he thought to look for her on the set of their show.
9. As Jack carried Isabel over the threshold of a house that looked remarkably like the set from the show, Isabel commented that the yard looked a little bare. As she worked her magic to make a tree appear, one of her neighbours from across the street saw what she did and told her husband. What were her neighbours' names?

Answer: Abner and Gladys

As far as I'm concerned this was one of the funniest parts of the movie, because it was very much like the original show. Gladys and Abner Kravitz lived across the street from Darren and Samantha, and nosey Gladys was always seeing strange things. Her husband never believed her, and she often ended up going to lie down with one of her "sick headaches".
10. Was Isabel the only real witch to be accidentally cast in the show?

Answer: No

It turned out that Iris Smythson, who was cast to play Samantha's mother Endora, was also a witch. There were little hints dropped about this throughout the movie, but then we saw her using her magic to manipulate and ensnare Isabel's father. She also had the attractive young women that he showed interest in say unattractive things such as, "I have Hepatitis C".
