Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film is set primarily in a large, multi-storied, multi-roomed sorority house. What, if anything, is going on in the house at the beginning of the movie?

Answer: They are having a Christmas party.

The girls are celebrating the end of term before the Christmas break. Many of them have their boyfriends in attendance at the party and alcohol is flowing freely. During the party the phone rings and is answered by Jess (played by Olivia Hussey) who summons the rest of the girls to hear the caller, who has obviously called before.

The caller makes little sense, sometimes whispering and crying, while screaming at other times. One of the tougher girls, Barb (played by Margot Kidder), takes the phone and eggs the caller on, inciting him to greater rage.

He threatens to kill her. This causes an argument between Barb and Clare who believes him to be dangerous. Clare goes to her room to start packing.
2. How does the killer get inside the house?

Answer: He climbs a trellis and enters through an attic window.

While the girls are inside, but before they receive the telephone call, the killer climbs up a trellis and lets himself into the attic. He breathes heavily during his climb and we see from his point of view as he looks in through the windows. Once in the attic he opens the hatch, giving him access to the rest of the house.
3. Clare is the first girl in the house to be murdered. How is she killed?

Answer: She is asphyxiated with a plastic dry-cleaning bag.

Clare is indeed packing her clothes to go home for Christmas. Her closet door is open and she takes articles of clothing out to put into her suitcase. There are empty dry cleaning bags hanging there. This is when the house mother's cat first makes an appearance. Clare senses something in the closet but instead of running, she moves in closer to see what it is. Of course that is when the killer strikes, wrapping a bag around her head and asphyxiating her.

He then takes her body up to the attic and puts her in a rocking chair.

The camera often finds her there, rocking in the chair. Her father comes to collect her the next day and no one knows where she is.
4. Mrs. Mac, the house mother, is rather fond of her sherry. Where do we NOT see her pulling a bottle out of hiding to take a swig?

Answer: a kitchen cupboard

We see her take a book off the shelf while saying "B for booze". She opens it up and the centre has been cut out in the shape of a bottle, wherein rests a bottle of sherry. We also see her lifting the lid off the toilet tank and pulling up a chain, attached to which is also a bottle of sherry.

After the stress of having Clare go missing and the search parties finding the mutilated body of a young girl in the park, we see her take a bottle out of her suitcase, presumably being packed to go home for Christmas, and take a swig.
5. Why does Mrs. Mac go up into the attic?

Answer: She hears her cat.

Mrs. Mac is packing and drinking when she hears her cat crying. She goes around calling his name, Claude, and finally decides that the sound is coming from the attic, so she climbs up the ladder. When she pokes her head through the opening she sees Clare in the rocking chair and the cat licking the bag. Before she can get away, the killer swings a huge hook on a rope at her, which impales and kills her.

Her body is also left in the attic.
6. How do we know when the killer has killed again?

Answer: He phones the sorority house and rambles insensibly.

The girls get one of his 'obscene calls' after every one of his kills. He is quite deranged in the calls, speaking in both male and female registers, talking about 'Agnes and Billy' and sometimes 'the baby'. It is possible, but never discussed, that he killed the teenager they found in the park, which could have precipitated the first call. Jess, played by Olivia Hussey, answers the phone and gets quite upset listening to him.

She eventually reports the calls and, because of the missing house mate's father and murdered teenager, the police take her seriously.

They put a trace on the phone and tell her to keep him on the line for as long as possible.
7. Who is the next one to be murdered after Mrs. Mac?

Answer: Barb

Barb (played by Margot Kidder) is the rather abrasive sorority sister who, at the beginning, took the phone from Jess and egged the killer on. This enraged him and he threatened to kill her, making good on the threat. She is asleep in her room when he kills her with the large horn of a glass unicorn that is part of a collection of glass ornaments.

This phone call is not long enough for it to be traced.
8. Eventually there is a call long enough for the technician to trace it. Where does he determine that the call is coming from?

Answer: inside the house

The technician phones the detective, who has the desk sergeant call Jess and tell her to get out of the house, without telling her why. Jess is resistant and finally the sergeant tells her that he is calling from the house. Earlier on it is established that there is a second line in the house mother's room so presumably that is where he is calling from. (There was an urban legend about this happening to a babysitter in Montreal which partially inspired the film.) Fearful for her two house mates still in the house, Jess grabs a fireplace poker for protection and goes up to wake them.

They are both dead and we learn that the murder of Phyl, played by Andrea Martin, is what provokes the phone call that they are able to trace. The two girls are bloodied, and entwined on the bed.

The closet door is partially open and we see the killer's eye, twitching, as he rants about Agnes and Billy. She slams the door shut, causing him to scream, and runs. She ends up in the basement because she can't get out the stiff, locked front door.
9. While Jess is hiding in the basement, who comes knocking at a window, eventually breaking it to get it?

Answer: her boyfriend Peter

Earlier in the movie the detective suggests that Peter could be the murderer. Peter is a music student at the university, who we earlier see fail a music recital, after which he smashes the piano. Jess has talked to him about being pregnant and not wanting to keep the baby.

He is adamantly against this and insists they get married. After one phone call Jess does wonder about the possibility of it being Peter, because the killer says the same things on the phone that Peter has said to her. So when he breaks a window to get to her, still talking about keeping the baby, she kills him with the poker that is in her hand from earlier.
10. Does Jess survive the experience?

Answer: We don't know.

The police and the doctor arrive and for some reason Jess is not taken to the hospital. She is sedated and is asleep in her bed. Clare's father appears and collapses from shock so he is taken to the hospital, with everyone going with him, leaving Jess alone.

The only guard left is a police officer standing outside the house. As the camera pans out we hear the phone ringing inside the house which would certainly suggest that Jess has been murdered, but it is never clearly shown.
