quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which version of "Jurassic Park" (the 1993 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, or the 1990 novel by Michael Crichton) does Robert Muldoon die?

Answer: Movie

Muldoon, the game warden of Jurassic Park, was killed by velociraptors in the movie, but managed to survive until the end of the book. People who perished in the book but lived in the movie included John Hammond and Ian Malcolm, who was magically brought back to life for "The Lost World."
2. Frank Darabont's 1994 "The Shawshank Redemption" was based on a 1982 novella called "Rita Hayworth And Shawshak Redemption" by Steven King. In which of these is Tommy Williams transferred to another prison?

Answer: Book

Tommy Williams cut a deal with the warden in the book to be transferred to another prison and released earlier in exchange for not telling what he knew about Andy. In the movie, the warden simply had him shot.
3. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was a novel by Roald Dahl, first published in 1964, that was later turned into a movie called "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (directed by Mel Stuart, 1971). Apart from this difference, in which version does Veruca Salt get turned into a blueberry?

Answer: Neither

Violet Beauregarde is the one to turn into a blueberry in both book and movie. Veruca Salt gets thrown down a chute for bad nuts by squirrels in the book, and falls down a chute for bad eggs in the movie.
4. "The Fellowship of the Ring" was both a 2001 movie directed by Peter Jackson, and a 1954 novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. In which version does the character of Tom Bombadil appear?

Answer: Book

Tom Bombadil appears in the book during the hobbits' journey to Bree. He is the master of the forest, and rescues the hobbits several times. However, he does not appear at all in the movie.
5. "Fight Club" was a 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk that was made into a movie in 1999 by director David Fincher. In which version does the narrator kill himself at the end?

Answer: Neither

At the end of both versions, the narrator sticks a gun in his mouth and shoots. However, he does not die. In the movie, he watches the buildings blow up with Marla. In the book, the last chapter is narrated like he is dead, but the descriptions are of a hospital.
6. 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs" movie (directed by Jonathan Demme) was based on a 1988 novel by Thomas Harris. In which version is Senator Martin's daughter named Catherine?

Answer: Both

Most of the major plot points from the book were preserved in the movie. Catherine Martin's abduction scene was altered slightly, appearing in the book during an interlude in a date with her boyfriend and in the movie as she is returning from the store.
7. Carl Sagan's 1985 novel "Contact" was brought to the big screen in 1997 by director Robert Zemeckis. In which version are Ellie Arroway and Palmer Joss lovers?

Answer: Movie

In the movie, Ellie and Palmer meet in Puerto Rico and spend a night together. In the book, they don't meet until after the message from Vega is discovered, and only become friendly to each other by the end.
8. "The Godfather" was a 1972 movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola and was based on a 1969 novel by Mario Puzo. In which version does Moe Green get assassinated?

Answer: Both

In the book, Moe Green is murdered in the home of his Hollywood mistress shortly after Nino Valenti's funeral. In the movie, he dies in a massage parlor during the Corleone's final vengeance (he's the one that got shot in the eye).
9. "The Shining" was director Stanley Kubrick's 1980 movie based on the 1977 novel by Stephen King. In which version does all work and no play make Jack a dull boy?

Answer: Movie

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" was what Jack had written on every page in his manuscript in the movie. The book had no mention of that phrase. Kubrick's version was so different from the novel that Stephen King said, "I'd admired Kubrick for a long time and had great expectations for the project, but I was deeply disappointed in the end result."
10. W.P. Kinsella's 1982 baseball novel "Shoeless Joe" was adapted to the big screen in 1989 by director Phil Alden Robinson, and renamed "Field Of Dreams." In which version does Ray kidnap J.D. Salinger?

Answer: Book

In the movie, Ray kidnaps Terrence Mann, a fictional author used for logistical reasons. The book also includes Eddie Scissons, the world's oldest living Chicago Cub, and Ray's twin brother Richard.
11. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" was the second novel in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, published in 1999, and also the second "Harry Potter" movie directed by Christopher Columbus, released in 2002. In which version does Hagrid raise Blast-Ended Skrewts?

Answer: Neither

The Blast-Ended Skrewts come from "Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire," not "The Chamber Of Secrets."
12. In which version of "The Princess Bride" (the 1987 movie directed by Rob Reiner, or the 1973 novel by William Goldman) does the story come to an end with Prince Humperdinck's armies attacking Westley and company as Buttercup's horse throws a shoe, Inigo's wounds reopen, and Westley relapses?

Answer: Book

William Goldman claimed that this book was based on a story he loved as a child but never read, by S. Morgenstern. His father would always read it to him, and left out this last bit. This dynamic is illustrated in the movie by Peter Falk and Fred Savage.
13. "The Neverending Story" was a German novel by Michael Ende, published in 1979, that was made into a movie in 1984 by director Wolfgang Petersen. In which version does Falkor rescue Atreyu from the Swamps of Sadness?

Answer: Movie

In the book, Atreyu actually rescues Falkor from the web of a giant spider-like creature known as Ygramul the Many. It is here that Atreyu hears Bastian's voice for the first time, not with Morla the Aged One. The book was originally written in German, and though the movie was produced in Germany, it was in English. The German title is "Die Unendliche Geschichte."
14. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," the groundbreaking 1988 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis, was based on a 1981 novel called "Who Censored Roger Rabbit?" by Gary K. Wolf. In which version are Roger and all the toons comic strip characters?

Answer: Book

Each of the toon characters spoke in word balloons. They were changed to animated characters for the movie because it made more sense for the medium. The plot of the novel was much darker than the movie, as it centered on the search by Roger's ghost and Eddie Valiant for Roger's killer.
15. Alexander Payne's 1999 movie "Election" was based on a 1998 novel by Tom Perrotta. In which version are there a grand total of six narrators?

Answer: Book

The movie has four narrators - Tracy, Paul, Tammy, and Mr. McAllister. The book has two more - Lisa and the janitor. The movie also changed Paul and Tammy's last names from Warren to Metzler. Mr. McAllister's fate was different too. In the book, he became a used car salesman, and in the movie he became a tour guide.
