Based on the Stephen King book of the same name, "The Green Mile" tells the story of John Coffey, an enormously large man who has the gift of healing. Found trying to restore life to two murdered young girls, Coffey (played by Michael Clarke Duncan) is sentenced to die.

In charge of the mile where he is sentenced, Edgecomb (played by Hanks) has a hard time fulfilling his duties once he realizes that Coffey is not only innocent, but is also "one of God's miracles". David Morse, Bonnie Hunt and James Cromwell also star in this 1999 film.

Released in 1985, "Silverado" is a classic western where the good guys encounter corruption so bad that they can't ignore it. The town sheriff, played by Brian Dennehy, is owned by one of the local ranchers and they're both unscrupulous enough to destroy anyone who stands in the way of what they want. This happens to be a piece of land owned by Mal Johnson's (Danny Glover) family.
This star-studded cast also includes John Cleese, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Hunt and Jeff Goldblum.

"White Christmas" was released in 1957. Bob and Phil (Cosby and Kaye) follow the two sisters of a former Army buddy (played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to Vermont where they are booked for the holidays. There they are surprised to find their former General is the owner of the inn.

The lack of snow has kept the crowds away so the boys devise a plan to both honour the General and bring him in some business. Of course come Christmas Eve, the weather finally cooperates and everyone is happy.

In "The Pink Panther", the late, great Sellers stars as Inspector Clouseau, a French police officer charged to chase down a famous jewel thief and keep the largest diamond in the world, the Pink Panther, safe. Unbeknownst to Clouseau, his wife is not only having an affair with the thief, but is also his accomplice in his crimes. David Niven, Robert Wagner and Capucine also star.

Released in 1997, "Men in Black" stars Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K, training new recruit Will Smith as Agent J. They have to stop the Bugs from getting away with 'the galaxy', a very powerful device which it has stolen from Arquillian royalty. The Arquillians want it back and if J and K can't find it, Earth will be destroyed.

Released in 1985, "The Purple Rose of Cairo" is lauded as one of Allen's finest. The film is about Cecellia (played by Mia Farrow) who escapes the dreariness of her life by going to the movies. The lines between fantasy and reality become blurred when her favourite screen character steps out of the movie and into her life.

This leaves the rest of the film characters at an impasse, unable to complete the storyline without him. The rebellion becomes epidemic when other film versions of Tom (played by Jeff Daniels) try to do the same thing.

"Yellow Submarine" was released in 1968. When the serene and beautiful Pepperland is invaded by the nasty Blue Meanies (who hate music), one man escapes to bring back help. He finds the fab four who accompany him in his yellow submarine to do battle (musically) with the Meanies.

The Beatles did not provide the voices for the film, nor were they particularly enthusiastic about being involved in it. They did, however provide the music (including some new songs) and attend the grand opening.

Sean Connery stars as Soviet Captain Marko Ramius, in "The Hunt for Red October". Captaining the sub on its maiden voyage, Ramius wants to take it, and its revolutionary Caterpillar Drive, to the Americans as a gift when he defects. But first he has to avoid getting killed by both the Soviets, when they realize that he's gone rogue, and by the Americans, who aren't sure that he isn't coming to launch an attack.

This is the first of Clancy's Jack Ryan stories to be made into a film, starring Alec Balwin as Ryan, a role later played by both Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck.

Based on the book by Philip Pullman, "The Golden Compass" gives us a world in which the church, in the guise of the Magesterium, has enormous control. Working as an agent of the church, Marisa Coulter (played by Nicole Kidman) is conducting experiments on children, severing them from their daemons before they reach maturity, when dust seems to become attracted to them. Meanwhile Lord Asriel (played by Daniel Craig) is seeking to build a bridge to an alternate universe, where he can conduct his own experiments with dust. Lyra (played by Dakota Blue Richards) has to find a way to save the children, with the help of the witches and giant ice bears.

The movie is "A Clockwork Orange". Alex (played by Malcolm McDowell) is a right nasty little number who thrives on rudeness and violence, which he even extends to his own mates. Because of this his friends turn against him, knocking him out at a murder scene, where he is caught by police. To shorten his sentence, he volunteers for a behaviour modification program, designed to make him incapable of committing any more violent acts, or of even thinking about them without becoming ill.

This leaves him particularly vulnerable to being attacked and he becomes the poster boy for a group trying to discredit the current government.
