Creative Credits 33 1/3, The Insulting Finale Quiz

Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker raised the writing of Creative Credits to an art form. The hilarious things they did at the end of their films taught me to appreciate the importance of watching a movie until the screen went blank. Thanks, ZAZ!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In their first film, ZAZ were just warming up. The credits say the cast is listed in order of appearance, but the first character listed was Cleopatra Schwartz, who didn't appear until 2/3 of the way through the film. Name it.

Answer: The Kentucky Fried Movie

"The Kentucky Fried Movie" was a ribald revue that spoofed just about everything.
2. "Top Secret!" starred Val Kilmer in a rare singing role, spoofing war films and 50s singing idols. Following credits for Focus Loader, Focus Puller and Clapper Loader are various joke credits. Of the following, which was NOT in the film?

Answer: Fiddle Faddle . . . Best Movie Treat

According to the soundtrack album for the movie, which I own (aren't you jealous?), Val Kilmer actually did the singing, which ain't half bad, in my uneducated opinion.
3. In both "Airplane!" and "Top Secret!" there was a credit for "Worst Boy," a play on the real credit found in most movies for a Best Boy. Who was credited in these films as the worst boy?

Answer: Adolf Hitler

Have you noticed that ZAZ seemed quite taken by the exclamation point? It's found at the end of almost every one of their movies. I guess either they were really excited about them, or they wanted the movie public to be.
4. Another recurring credit, found in three ZAZ films, was "In case of tornado..." What suggestion did they make?

Answer: South-west corner of cellar or basement

We had a piano in the southwest corner of our basement when I was a kid. I always figured that would be a very safe place to go. The previous owners of the place left it there because they couldn't get it out. Apparently they put it down there before the basement was fully finished.
5. " 'Otto' (the inflatable autopilot) ... himself" is found in which ZAZ tour de force?

Answer: Airplane!

Other famous Ottos in film include director Otto Preminger, Miranda Otto, who played Eowyn in the "Lord of the Rings" films, and John "Otto" Cleese.
6. By the time they made "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult", ZAZ were in rare form. One of the entries found in the credits for this movie was "Leon Czolgosz," a famous assassin. Who did he kill?

Answer: William McKinley

Nathuran Godse assassinated Gandhi, Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip and three men, allegedly members of the Nation of Islam, were convicted in the assassination of Malcolm X.
7. California assemblyman and candidate for U.S. Senate Howard Jarvis played "Man in Taxi" who appeared after the end of a ZAZ film saying, "Well, I'll give him another twenty minutes, but that's it!" after waiting in the cab the entire length of the film. Which film?

Answer: Airplane!

Howard Jarvis, apparently a very patient man, spearheaded the taxpayers' revolt in California in the 1970s. This was his only film appearance.
8. In the credits for Ruthless People, a ZAZ 1986 film, a credit is given for "Best Pitcher." Upon whom did they bestow this honor?

Answer: Dwight Gooden

Dwight Gooden pitched from 1984-2000. His career win-loss record is 194-112 in 430 games with an ERA of 3.51.
9. The credits for "The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear" included listings for Crane Grip, Dolly Grip and Poli-Grip. The Poli-Grip credit was given to an actress who, at the time, was doing ads for Poli-Grip. Name her.

Answer: Martha Raye

Martha Raye was affectionately known as "The Big Mouth," hence the reason, one assumes, she was chosen for that ad. She is perhaps best known among post baby boomers as Boss Witch from "Pufnstuf" or Benita Bizarre from "The Bugaloos" television series.
10. In 2001, Jerry Zucker produced and directed a film without the rest of ZAZ, a loose remake of a classic comedy from the early sixties that had cameos by half of Hollywood. During the credits we see most of the cast singing, dancing and generally whooping it up during a Smash Mouth concert. Name the film.

Answer: Rat Race

"Rat Race" presented a story line similar to "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World". Among the notables who cameoed in "Rat Race," you can see attorney Gloria Allred, sportscasters Chris Myers and Kevin Frazier, Dave Thomas, of SCTV fame, comedian Paul Rodriguez, Dean Kane and Colleen Camp, as well as a dozen Lucy Ricardos.
11. The credits for "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" included a listing for Rigging Grip, followed by a listing for Kung-Fu grip. What was the name of the toy that came with that feature in 1974?

Answer: G.I. Joe

Habro reissued G.I. Joe with the Kung Fu grip in 2002.
12. ZAZ got their start in television, with the series "Police Squad!", and, of course, it included crazy credits. Which of the following was NOT something unusual they did?

Answer: Closing theme music was from different police shows on the air at the time

ZAZ made 6 half hour episodes of "Police Squad!" perhaps making it the only television-show-turned movie where there is more movie time than television time.
13. At the end of "Hot Shots!" was this advisory: "IF YOU HAD LEFT THIS THEATRE WHEN THESE CREDITS BEGAN, YOU'D BE ___________." What filled in the blank?

Answer: HOME NOW

Seems odd that a movie with such entertaining credits would suggest patrons made a mistake by staying to watch the credits, but who am I to judge? Maybe it was some kind of reverse psychology, to try to get people to stay and watch the credits. Of course, if they didn't stay to watch, then they wouldn't have seen the advisory, so the reverse psychology thing wouldn't work on them. (contemplative pause) This might take some thinking to work out. I'll get back to you.
14. In the credits for "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult", there was a listing for Music Orchestration and Conducting, followed by a credit for "Mr. Newborn's Really Sexy Cousin . . . Amanda." What was Mr. Newborn's first name?

Answer: Ira

Ira Newborn worked on music for over 30 movies and television shows, including "Police Squad," the "Naked Gun Series", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and Kevin Smith's movie, "Mallrats". (significant look, indicating foreshadowing)
15. Even the title of a film didn't escape the ZAZ team. "The Naked Gun" name is a play on what 1980 film, a silver screen incarnation of a 1960s television comedy?

Answer: The Nude Bomb

"The Nude Bomb" was aptly named, because it may have been 1980's worst film. Don Adams played Maxwell Smart, but most of the other main characters from the series were absent. Maybe they had better agents.
