"Gee on a little bit, Jim! Haw!" Timmons may be obnoxious, but he loves his mules. As he and Dances With Wolves board the wagon to head out to Fort Sedgewick, Timmons yells to the mules, "Jim and Jake! Haw!"

Answer: "Not what you would call much of a going concern."

He also says, "Everybody's run off or got kilt." Upon seeing the fort is deserted, Timmons wants to turn around and head back, but John Dunbar tells him, "This is my post." Timmons argues with him about it until Dunbar pulls a gun on him and orders him to unload the supplies.

Answer: Otter

The children lasso the horse and are riding away with it, but the horse jerks violently on the rope, pulling Otter (who was holding the rope) from his horse, injuring his arm. When Otter blames him for his predicament, Smiles A Lot says, "My idea was only to take the horse, not fall down." I think this is one of the funniest lines in the movie!

Amidst rumors of Pawnee war parties in the area, the tribe assembles a group of warriors to go find them. However, while they are gone, the Pawnee arrive at the village. As the remaining tribe members gather together in a panic, Stands With A Fist tells Dances With Wolves, "The Pawnee are coming - 40 or 50 men.

A hunting party found them to the north." Dances With Wolves tells them he has rifles at the fort, and Chief Ten Bears sends him to retrieve them. The tribe that attacked Stands With A Fist's family when she was a child was also Pawnee, as were the group that killed Timmons on his return trip from Fort Sedgewick.

Answer: American flag

After several raids on his fort, Dunbar decides he needs to make a better impression on the natives than the one he has presented to them thus far. He gets dressed up in his full dress uniform and heads towards the Indian village, carrying an American flag as he goes. On the way, he comes upon Stands With A Fist, who has slashed her wrists as part of the mourning ritual for her recently deceased husband. She faints from fear upon seeing him, and he wraps her wounds with the flag and takes her back to the village.

Answer: the appearance of Indians there

Two Socks appears on the horizon just before Kicking Bird's first visit to the fort, and also just before the group led by Wind In His Hair arrives later. This holds true even at the very end, when Two Socks seems to instead signal the presence of soldiers at Fort Sedgewick, who shoot him dead.

However, as the camera slowly zooms out after Two Socks is shot, we see the Sioux rescue party hiding behind the ridge that Two Socks was on at the time. The only time Two Socks' arrival at the fort does not precede the arrival of Indians there is the scene where Dances With Wolves goes back to the fort one last time, to gather possessions before moving permanently to the Sioux village.

In this scene, Two Socks finally eats from Dances With Wolves' hand.

Answer: Smiles A Lot

During the buffalo hunt, an injured buffalo rams Smiles A Lot's horse, knocking him to the ground. As he stands, he finds himself trapped in the midst of the great herd. The injured buffalo charges towards Smiles A Lot, but is shot dead at the last second by Dances With Wolves. Smiles A Lot gets rescued from harm several times in the movie.

Answer: Kicking Bird

He is the Holy Man, after all. He gives a long speech about what is expected of a Sioux husband, but Dances With Wolves does not hear it, as he is lost in his thoughts and emotions, gazing into Stands With A Fist's eyes intently.

Answer: uses it for toilet paper

He and a fellow soldier are in the reeds doing their business, when his friend asks if he has any paper. He is shown tearing the page where Dunbar writes, "I Love Stands With A Fist. Dances With Wolves" from the book and throwing it to his friend to use as toilet paper.

Answer: Smiles A Lot

Bauer had just tried to shoot Smiles A Lot, but his gun misfires because it had gotten wet when Bauer jumped into the river. He then strikes Smiles A Lot with the gun butt, and moves meanacingly towards him. Wind In His Hair sees this, whoops, and charges Bauer on his horse, swinging his tomahawk, which is attached to a rope, over his head. Bauer is momentarily distracted by the charging Wind In His Hair, and as he turns back towards Smiles A Lot, he is greeted with a tomahawk chop right in the chest, courtesy of the young Smiles A Lot. Wind In His Hair whoops his approval, and rides off as Bauer slumps to the ground. Dances With Wolves kills Spivey, the soldier who repeatedly abuses and taunts him.

We see Dances With Wolves carving it in earlier scenes. When he presents it to Kicking bird as he says his goodbyes, Kicking Bird asks how it smokes, and Dances With Wolves replies that he's never smoked it.

After Dances With Wolves gives him the peace pipe he had carved, Kicking Bird gives him a a pipe in return. They have given each other the same gift. Just before this scene, we see Kicking Bird searching furiously for it in his lodge. He is very upset that his friend is leaving, and can't find it. He throws and slams things around furiously during the search, overcome by his emotions. His wife finds it and brings it to him. After they had exchanged gifts, Kicking Bird says, "We come far, you and me."

Answer: his lost journal

After Dances With Wolves and Kicking Bird have said their goodbyes, Smiles A Lot runs up to him just as he is leaving. He says nothing, but presents him with the journal, wrapped in a cloth. He hugs Dances With Wolves and then runs off without saying a word. As Dances With Wolves unwraps the package, he is surprised to see that it is his lost journal. Makes you wonder why he never gave it to him earlier, considering how much trouble Dances With Wolves' efforts to retrieve it caused.

About half the movie is filmed on the Triple U Ranch, near Pierre, South Dakota. The Triple U is home to the world's largest privately owned buffalo herd (about 3,500 head as of filming of the movie).
