1. The two races introduced by the narrator in the beginning of the film are the cruel Skeksis and the gentle ____________.

Answer: Mystics

The Skeksis and Mystics originated from a race called "urSkeks" that tried to use the power of the crystal to purify themselves and ended up being split into the two different types of beings. It was the quarreling Skeksis that struck the crystal and caused the shard to break off. (They re-edited the film and changed "ur-Ru" to "Mystics" in the final cut.)

2. What kind of creature is Jen? (He's the young, childlike boy shown sitting by the creek playing a flute in the beginning of the film.)

Answer: Gelfling

Gelflings are a race of elf-like creatures that were almost completely wiped out because of a prophecy by the evil Skeksis.
(A puppet is used for most of the scenes with Jen. They actually used real people when you see him running or climbing from a distance.)

Answer: Aughra

Aughra is quite a unique character. She's been around a long time and knows many things. She can also take out her eye to have a better view of things!

Jen: "What is that?" (inquiring about the creature)
Kira: "Just a Nebrey. She won't hurt you."
In the next scene, we see the Skeksis dining on the creature.
"Roast Nebrey, my favourite." This shows the difference in compassion between the Gelflings and Skeksis.

The Skeksis use the crystal bats as spies. As the bats fly around, the images that they see are reflected back to the Skeksis castle in the crystal.
Kira: "What they see, the Skeksis see."

Answer: Trial By Stone

The Skeksis can hardly contain their excitement at the death of the old emperor. A decision would have to be made, so they decide on Trial by Stone, at which point podling slaves pull on some ropes and a huge stone with 2 swords rises from the floor. The challenge is to break a piece of the stone off with one mighty blow.

The General starts, and strikes the stone. The Chamberlain has a good blow next. But on the General's second try, he knocks off a huge chunk of stone. The frightened Chamberlain is then stripped and banished from the Skeksis, while the General is made Emperor.

The prophecy is saying that when the 3 suns line up, like in an eclipse, they will shine down on the cracked crystal, and it is then that the crystal will be able to be healed, but only by a Gelfling.

Answer: They jump off the cliff, saved by Kira's wings.

This is a very fun scene in the movie. Jen is surprised by Kira's wings - he didn't know that Gelflings had wings at all. Kira is quick to tell him that he does not have wings because he's a boy.

9. The Skeksis capture the Podlings in order to steal their souls, so that the emperor could live longer.

Answer: False

They do this by fastening the Podlings into chairs, and opening a shaft that reflects the light of the Dark Crystal right into their eyes. The light drains the essence from the Podlings, which makes them mindless so they can be used as the Skesis' slaves.

The Skekis drink the essence to appear younger. The Gelflings were once used for this purpose, but they were all eventually wiped out, except of course for Jen and Kira.

10. Who heals the Crystal at the end of the movie, bringing peace back to the land?

Answer: Jen

Kira tosses the shard to Jen, and the Skeksis stab her. Kira dies as Jen heals the crystal, and as the prophecy is fulfilled, Jen holds Kira's lifeless body. The Historians, who are the combined Skeksis and Mystics, tell Jen that his sacrifice restored the true power of the crystal, and healed the land, so in return, bring Kira back to life.
