Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "In a single day and night of misfortune, the island of Atlantis disappeared into the depths of the sea." This frightening quote opens the movie. To whom is it attributed?

Answer: Plato

We see this quote on the screen right before the opening scene where Atlantis is plunged into the ocean. This quote was taken from Plato's dialogue "Critias," which was written along with "Timaeus" and "Hermocrates" as part of a trilogy. In "Critias," written in 360 BC, the Atlanteans are at war with the Athenians.

The four main characters in these dialogues are Timaeus, Critias, Socrates (yes, "the" Socrates) and Hermocrates.
2. What is the name of Milo Thatch's cat?

Answer: Fluffy

Milo never sees his cat Fluffy again, since he stays in Atlantis with Kida, but it is implied that Whitmore becomes Fluffy's new owner.
3. What famous person does Commander Rourke like to refer to?

Answer: P.T. Barnum

"P.T. Barnum was right" is what Rourke says right after he punches Milo in the face. P.T. Barnum is a famous showman, businessman and con-man. He is most well-known for coining the expression: "There's a sucker born every minute." Rourke was trying to subtly call his crew "suckers" with that comment for falling for Milo's speech about ethics.
4. When Milo Thatch was eight years old he went on a camping trip with his grandpa Thaddeus and found what he thought was a genuine arrowhead. What was it revealed to be years later?

Answer: Just some compressed shale mixed with zinc pyrite that had fractured into an isosceletic triangulate

As the crew began to warm up to Milo during the movie, each crew member took turns telling their "story." Milo told Audrey this story when she asked what his grandfather Thaddeus was like. Mole found the story "so cute"!
5. What was Cookie's real name?

Answer: Jebediah Allerdyce Farnsworth

Cookie is the official cook for the Atlantis expedition. His cooking is southern style, greasy and unappetizing, which means there are a lot of leftovers. At the end of the movie, he becomes extremely wealthy along with the other crew members. Fenton Q. is the first name of Mr. Harcourt. Hubert Farsworth is the name of the senile professor in "Futurama." Billy Bob Jeremiah was a made up name.
6. If the crystal was taken away from the people of Atlantis, what would happen to them?

Answer: They would die.

The crystal is taken away from the Atlanteans by Rourke and his men near the end of the film. Although the Atlanteans do not die immediately, one can see that their crystals fade and their technology gradually stops working.
7. Milo Thatch was smart to leave his home in Washington, D.C. to live in Atlantis because he narrowly escaped which war?

Answer: World War I

World War I began in the summer of 1914 and ended in 1918. The United States joined the fray in 1917. Since the movie was set in 1914, Milo just barely avoided the devastating effects of the war for the war had most likely already started. Being a young man in the U.S. he probably would have been drafted as well. It makes one worry for the other members of the crew.
8. Sweet mother of Jefferson Davis! "Atlantis: the Lost Empire" marked the end of which actor's film career?

Answer: Jim Varney

Jim Varney died during the making of the film, although most of the voice work was done by him. He died at fifty of lung cancer and the film is dedicated to him. Michael J. Fox's acting was hindered by Parkinson's but he worked on other projects after "Atlantis". Florence Stanley's last film role was actually the second "Atlantis" film. John Mahoney is an old actor but that does not stop him from enjoying a busy acting career.

(There's a clue in the question: Jane Cook was the mother of Jefferson Davis, and Jim Varney played "Cookie" in the movie.)
9. What does Audrey Ramirez's sister do for a living?

Answer: She is working on becoming middleweight boxing champion.

This information is from when Audrey tells Milo her story. Audrey's father wanted to have two sons; one to run his mechanic shop and the other to be a professional boxer. However, he had two daughters instead, who ended up fulfilling his wishes anyway.
10. Which of these was not an innovative aspect of "Atlantis: the Lost Empire"?

Answer: There are no musical theatre numbers.

"Atlantis: the Lost Empire" was supposed to be a departure from all previous Disney movies. Unfortunately it still did not do well at the box office. There are no musical theatre numbers in the movie (thank goodness) but musical interludes had been excluded from previous Disney films, so that was not an innovative aspect of "Atlantis." The Atlantean language in the movie (used for the Atlantean characters) was created by Dr. Marc Okrand, who also created Klingon.

The different types of animation were juxtaposed so that Disney could begin its transition into 3D animation.

The comic book animation style in the movie was that of Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy.
