Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh, now when are you two gonna stop all this fighting?"

Answer: It's All Over

Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) sang this lyric. She was talking to Deena (Beyonce Knowles) and Effie (Jennifer Hudson) when Deena and Effie were fighting about being the lead singer and who Curtis was in love with. Lorrell tried to help them work out their problems and to stop fighting.
2. One of the songs in the movie AND the soundtrack was called 'Listen'.

Answer: True

The song 'Listen' was sung by Beyonce. When you saw this part in the movie, Deena (Beyonce) was in a recording studio. She sang because Curtis (Jamie Foxx) was completely taking over what her dreams were and had sort of backed her into a corner, if you will, making her feel like she could never be good enough.
3. "There's a river to cross and a mountain to climb."

Answer: Patience

This was sung by Keith Robinson (who played C.C. White), Jimmy Early (who was portrayed by Eddie Murphy), and by Anika Noni Rose (who played the role of Lorrel). At the beginning of this song, Eddie and Anika were in a recording studio doing what usually happens in a recording studio; recording, if you didn't know. Near the end of the song, this composition was played to Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) in the movie, but he said that music was supposed to sell and not to just tell the truth.

The phrase "There's a river to cross and a mountain to climb," means that there will be obstacle on the way to your goals and to your happiness.
4. "Stop all the rivers, push, strike, and kill"

Answer: And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going

For the first part of the song, Effie sang to Curtis and tried to win him back. Then Curtis walked away and Effie kept singing some more. She just wanted Curtis back with her instead of Deena. When she sang this line, she meant that she would stop at nothing to get him back.

This song was articulated very shortly after 'It's All Over.'
5. "You used to be so light and free. You used to smile just looking at me." Are these lyrics in any of the songs from 'Dreamgirls'?

Answer: Yes

In the question above, the lyrics were from the song 'Heavy'.

The line from the question showed that someone used to really care about someone else and that they used to have a happy disposition but now it's all gone.
Effie was mad at Deena and Curtis, so she stormed out when they were performing this song in the movie.
6. "How many good friends have I already lost?"

Answer: I Am Changing

This composition was sung by Jennifer Hudson when she was in the bar/lounge in the movie. Effie was looking for a job and she kept saying that the only thing she knew how to do was sing, and this was the song she sang for the bar/lounge owner as an audition to sing there. That turned out to be her new job.
Also, she sang it because she was having a miserable time in her life then. So Effie decided that she would try better as a person and try to make a better life for her child, Magic.

Specifically, the line meant that she has made mistakes in her life and that she had lost friends in the process.
7. "Life's not as bad as it may seem if you open your eyes to what's in front of you."

Answer: Dreamgirls

Do you know how hard it is to find lyrics in this song that don't have the words 'dream' or 'dreamgirls' in them? Anyway, 'Dreamgirls' was sung right after the trio turned from the Dreamettes into the Dreams and 'Dreamgirls' was sort of like their first single to introduce them as a fresh, new group.

The lyric means that life's not so bad if you open yourself up and see what's good in life.
8. Fill in the blank: "Hey ____, let's rock with Jimmy Early!"

Answer: Curly

This was from the song 'I Meant You No Harm/Jimmy's Rap' when the anniversary of Rainbow Records occurred. Jimmy (Eddie Murphy) claimed that he couldn't sing any more sad songs ('I Meant You No Harm') and got a beat from the band and randomly started rapping ('Jimmy's Rap'). "Hey, Curly, let's rock with Jimmy Early!" was the first line of words for his rap.
9. "And I have had the most beautiful dreams any man's ever had."

Answer: None of these

The first time this song was sung it was sung by Jamie Foxx, but in the reprise, Jamie and Beyonce sang it together. The title was 'When I First Saw You'. It was harmonized at a photo shoot and in Deena and Curtis's house. Curtis was trying to persuade Deena that everything would be much better if she just did what he told her to do, although he didn't admit that he was tricking her into that. Deena responded with the song, 'Listen.'

When Curtis sang this part, he meant that he'd had a better life than everyone else when he was with Deena.
10. "You're not going anywhere, you're staying and taking your share."

Answer: Family

This was sung by Jennifer Hudson, Keith Robinson, Jamie Foxx, Anika Noni Rose, and Beyonce Knowles after Effie was told that Deena would be singing lead instead of her. The song was performed on a stage and in a dressing room. Effie was concered about what would happen to the group if something was changed. Also, I suppose Effie was thinking about leaving the group but she stayed. She snapped later, but she was pregnant.

You can tell this lyric means that Effie was not leaving and she was getting some fun and fame to go along with that.
