The song was about freedom. The lyrics reflected the thoughts of Wyatt's dream. The first part of the song has these lyrics;

At the end of the film, Billy was shot by two locals in a truck. Wyatt went back to help his friend, but realized he needed urgent medical attention. Wyatt jumped on his motorcycle to get some help for his friend. By then the two men in the truck had turned around and were heading back to where they had shot Billy. As they approached Wyatt, one local in the truck fired his shotgun, hitting the motorcycle on the petrol tank. The motorcycle exploded in a huge ball of fire and killed Wyatt.
