Answer: Kristallnacht

Kristallnacht, or "Night of Broken Glass", occurred the night of November 9-10, 1938. About 250 synagogues and 7,000 other Jewish-owned buildings were destroyed through Germany and occupied lands. Also, nearly 30,000 Jews were arrested or sent to concentration camps.

It occurred as supposed retribution for the assassination of Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat, by a Jewish woman in Paris.

His sister Bertha was killed. In his autobiography, Solomon says his sister was shot while on a death march, not during the attack on the family's home as portrayed in the movie.

Lodz is where Solly's father was born. They obtained passports and documents stating they were Polish and Solly's father insisted they were now Polish and non-Jewish, to prevent further attacks on the family.

Basia is a hunchback who falls in love with Solly during his family's two-year stay in Lodz. When the Germans invade Poland, Solly and his brother Isaac are sent away by their father, farther east toward the Soviet Union. Basia, crying and trying to run after them, is left to her eventual fate at the hands of the Nazis.

Solly uses the name Josef Peters and invents a story about why he was in a Soviet orphanage for nearly two years. The German soldiers assume the Soviets killed his parents and "adopt" him (since Solly is a minor and can't actually be in the army) as their good-luck charm since he identified Stalin's brother.

Answer: He says Solly is from good Aryan ancestry.

The scene is drawn out, slowly unfolding as the professor makes measurements and cross-checks them with what dimensions Jews and Aryans are supposed to have. After building up the suspense, the professor declares Solly to be solidly Aryan, although not a perfect example.

Answer: Robert tells him he is homosexual.

Robert, an actor before the war, admits he is gay and thinks Solly is too since he always bathed away from the other men in the unit. He and Solly become friends after the encounter, as they both are hiding secrets that would get them killed by the Nazis.

The sniper turns out to be the person Solly is translating for the German soldiers. He says the sniper saw two Germans standing up and was going to shoot them. Just afterward, two of the soldiers next to him get shot. Robert tries to drag one into the trench and is himself shot and killed.

His brother sees him and convinces the Soviets about to execute Solly that he is Jewish. In his autobiography, Solomon says it was only then that he learned what the Nazis were doing during the Holocaust and eventually finds out his father, mother, and sister were all killed, leaving only he and his two brothers alive.

Solomon learned his father, mother, and sister died during the Holocaust. He eventually emigrated to Palestine and fought in the Israeli Army after the creation of Israel in 1948.
