Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "He who makes a ______ of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." What word completes this quote?

Answer: Beast

This is the very first thing you see at the beginning of the movie. It's a quote by Dr. Johnson written on screen before the film is shown. This applies very well to the movie. Throughout, Duke and Dr. Gonzo make definite beasts of themselves and then some. Overall, they do stupid things.
2. "We were somewhere around _________ on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold." What place are they talking about?

Answer: Barstow

These are the very first words uttered from Duke's mouth at the very beginning of the film right before the car whooshes by. He's driving through the desert with his attorney Dr. Gonzo. They're on their way to Vegas from California.
3. "No! We can't stop here. This is ______ country!" What word is missing?

Answer: Bat

These words are said by Raoule Duke to Dr. Gonzo as he sees strange bats flying around in broad daylight. They are driving through the desert. The two of them freak out as they often do and drive on.
4. "_______ memories on this _______ night in Las Vegas. Has it been five years? Six? It seems like a lifetime, the kind of peak that never comes again...." What are the missing words?

Answer: Strange/Nervous

Raoule Duke goes over everything that's happened so far on his journey for a simple report on a motorcycle race. He is typing at his typewriter as the voice over of what he's thinking is going. "Get Together" by the Youngbloods plays in the background. The five years or six is never quite explained.
5. "There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Too weird to live, too rare to die." Which character of the movie is Duke talking about?

Answer: Dr. Gonzo

This is said by Duke to himself about Dr. Gonzo. It's one of his many voice overs. Duke watches Dr. Gonzo go off on his flight for the last time in the movie and reminisces about how great he is. The two men are essentially very good friends.
6. "Hello? Hi, Lucy. God Bless." Is this quote correct?

Answer: Yes

This is after Duke and Gonzo relocate to a different hotel. Some time after sending her off to another hotel, Lucy, the Barbara Streisand fan, calls Gonzo and Duke at their hotel. These are the first words Dr. Gonzo says to her when he picks up the phone.
7. "Who said anything about slicing you up, man? I just wanted to carve a little __ on your forehead." What letter completes the sentence?

Answer: Z

This is said by Dr. Gonzo to Duke after the incident with the bath tub and "White Rabbit". Duke and Gonzo are in a hotel room which has been trashed and turned to hell. Duke finds Gonzo in the bathtub. Duke clearly says that he just wants some rest and is frightened that Gonzo will kill him.
8. "You took too much, man. Too much." Is this the complete quote?

Answer: No

The complete quote is "You took too much, man. You took too much, too much." It's said when Duke overdoses. Dr. Gonzo states how Duke took too much.
9. "What kind of rat psychotic would play that song right now, at this moment?" What song is he referring to?

Answer: Tammy

This is a song by Debbie Reynolds. Duke wakes up after a serious rampage and hears it. He finds the song a tad inappropriate as the quote suggests. Duke and Gonzo go to see Debbie Reynolds near the beginning of the movie but are thrown out nearly a minute after going in.
10. "I hate to say this, but this place is getting to me. I think I'm getting the ____." What word completes the end of this masterpiece sentence?

Answer: Fear

Dr. Gonzo says this to Duke while they are at the bar with the rotating counter in Las Vegas. I found it appropriate to end with since that's partly what the movie and book are about; the fear.
