quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Ray and Annie go to college?

Answer: Berkeley

2. What did Ray major in at college?

Answer: English

Officially English, unofficially the '60's.
3. What is the name of Ray and Annie's daughter?

Answer: Karin

4. Where is Ray when he first hears 'the voice'?

Answer: in his cornfield

5. What is the first thing the voice says to Ray?

Answer: If you build it, he will come.

6. Ray tells Annie his father used to tell him that Shoeless Joe Jackson's glove was 'where triples went to die'. Which position did Joe play?

Answer: left field

While he was a good fielder, Shoeless Joe was better known for his hitting. His 1911 record for number of hits by a rookie (233) lasted for 90 years, until finally broken in 2001 by Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners. Joe's lifetime batting average of .356 ranks third all-time.

Incidentally, there are relatively few triples hit to left field, compared to right field. It would have been more realistic to say that Joe's glvoe was "where doubles went to die", while triples would more appropriately "die" in a right fielder's glove.
7. After hearing the voice, Ray turned off what movie that his daughter was watching at the kitchen table?

Answer: Harvey

In 'Harvey' Jimmy Stewart's companion is an imaginary rabbit. Ray was self-conscious about hearing voices and didn't want to encourage this sort of fantasy in his daughter.
8. Who first saw Shoeless Joe Jackson in the baseball field?

Answer: Ray's daughter

Ray's brother-in-law can't see the players until near the end of the movie.
9. What former 'thirtysomething' star plays Annie's brother, who urges Ray to sell the farm before the bank forecloses on it?

Answer: Timothy Busfield

On 'thirtysomething' Busfield played Elliot Weston, who ran an advertising agency along with his friend Michael Steadman, played by Ken Olin.
10. What was the subject of the PTA meeting which Ray and Annie went to?

Answer: book banning

The crowd at the meeting starts out backing the censorship proposal, but after an impassioned speech by Annie the crowd comes around to the free speech point of view. The energetic debate reminds Annie of her activist days in the '60's.
11. Ray talks the writer Terence Mann into going to a ballgame with him at what Major League ballpark?

Answer: Fenway Park

Ray had a dream about going to a game at Fenway Park with Terrence Mann. When Annie says 'is that the one with the big green wall?', she realizes that they both had the same dream, and she then supports Ray in his quest to go find Mann, who by that time has been a recluse for many years.
12. Where do Ray and Terence Mann go to look for Archie 'Moonlight' Graham?

Answer: Minnesota

When they get there they find out he is dead. However, when Ray takes a nighttime walk, he finds he has gone back in time and he runs into Moonlight.
13. What does the young Archie Graham do to cause the pitcher to knock him down?

Answer: winks at him

The old Moonlight had mentioned winking to Ray when Ray asked Moonlight if he had any regrets. The full speech, one of the alltime great movie speeches, and wonderfully delivered by Burt Lancaster, is: 'I never got to bat in the major leagues. I would have liked to have had that chance. Just once. To stare down a big league pitcher. To stare him down, and just as he goes into his windup, wink. Make him think you know something he doesn't. That's what I wish for. Chance to squint at a sky so blue that it hurts your eyes just to look at it. To feel the tingling in your arm as you connect with the ball. To run the bases--stretch a double into a triple, and flop face-first into third, wrap your arms around the bag. That's my wish, Ray Kinsella. That's my wish. And is there enough magic out there in the moonlight to make this dream come true?'
14. What book is Terrence Mann reading in the bleachers, when he begins his wonderful 'People will come' speech?

Answer: The Baseball Encyclopedia

In a truly stirring movie moment, Mann gets up and says, 'People will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door, innocent as children, longing for the past...

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray.

It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. Oh people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.'
15. Where is the farm depicted in the movie actually located?

Answer: Dyersville, Iowa

The field has been preserved in its orignal pristine conditon, and can be visited for free from April to November. It is located at the Lansing family farm in Dyersville, which is 25 miles West of Dubuque.
