Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the princess in the film 'The Black Cauldron'?

Answer: Eilonwy

Eilonwy is the twelve year old princess from the film 'The Black Cauldron'. She is small and slight, with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Her dress is modest and plain, featuring the colours pink, red, white and purple-blue. She can be strong willed and stubborn, but she is also kind and affectionate. We first meet her in the dungeons of the Horned King's castle, trying to escape. She has magical powers, which the Horned King wants to use to find the legendary Black Cauldron.

The film was made in 1985 and has a PG rating. The film was poorly received by audiences and so Eilonwy is not recognised as an official princess, despite being born one. 'The Black Cauldron' does not have any songs, which could contribute to its lack of success. The film is actually quite scary and darker than other Disney films.

Eilonwy is voiced by Susan Sheridan.

In regards to the other answers, Dyrnwyn is the name of the sword Taran finds. The made-up name Tarwyn is based on Taran's, the main male protagonist, and gwythaints are actually dragon-type creatures that work for the Horned King.
2. In the film 'Enchanted', Giselle decides not to marry Prince Edward. Instead, when he returns to Andalasia, he marries someone else. What is the name of his bride?

Answer: Nancy

At the start of the film, Nancy is the long-term girlfriend of Robert Phillip. She has dark hair and is described as an influential woman by Robert, as she owns her own business: a fabric store. Her last name is Tremaine, as she was to be the stepmother of Robert's daughter, Morgan. This is a link to the film 'Cinderella', as the stepmother's name is Lady Tremaine. Similarly, Robert's surname is also based on another Disney character, Prince Philip from 'Sleeping Beauty'.

Although Giselle wears the princess dresses for the majority of the movie and always tries to find her 'true love', Prince Edward, she does not ever become a princess. She was not born a princess and does not become one, as she chooses to marry Robert.

'Enchanted' is a 2007 film and is both a cartoon and a live-action film, as it is based in the fictitious world of Andalasia and in New York, USA. Nancy is played by Idina Menzel, who also voiced the princess who later became Queen Elsa in the 2013 Disney film, 'Frozen'.

Narissa is the name of the evil Queen, Morgan is the name of Robert's daughter and Sam is the name of the receptionist at Robert's workplace. Incidentally, Sam is portrayed by Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid'.
3. Kida is the daughter of a blind king, whose kingdom is powered by a special force. To which 2001 film does Kida belong?

Answer: Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Kidagakash "Kida" Nedakh is the only daughter of the King Kashekim Nedakh, King of Atlantis, and later becomes the Queen when he dies. Her mother, the Queen, was chosen by the crystal, the Heart of Atlantis, which provides the energy in the city.

Kida has long, untidy white hair and blue eyes. She has blue tattoos like the rest of the population in Atlantis, and wears simple clothing, usually a bikini and sarong. She wears a crystal around her neck, like the rest of the Atlanteans, which allows her to use special energy. Through the crystal, she is blessed with long life and, although she appears to be in her twenties, she is actually thousands of years old. She is intelligent and curious about the outside world and hopes Milo will be able to help.

'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' is not as popular as other Disney films. Although Kida, like Eilonwy, was born a real princess, she is not as well-known as the other princesses. Kida was voiced by Natalie Strom as a child, and by Cree Summer as an adult.

The Heart of Atlantis and the Shepherd's Journal are objects in the film, and 'Atlantis: Milo's Return' (2003) is the even lesser known sequel.
4. Ariel is, of course, the most popular mermaid in 'The Little Mermaid'. However, she has six older princess sisters! Which of these is NOT one of Ariel's sisters?

Answer: Athena

The princesses are all one year apart, with Ariel being the youngest at 16 in 'The Little Mermaid' (1989). The names of her sisters are: Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista and Andrina. They are all very beautiful and, like Ariel, like to sing. They each have a favourite colour, and match their shell bras to their tails. They also all wear their hair up, each wearing a special hair accessory. This is to make Ariel look especially different, as she has a purple bra and a green tail and wears her hair down.

Athena is the name of Ariel's mother, who dies in the prequel 'The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning' (2008). As the wife of Triton, this would make her the Queen. Athena looks just like Ariel, with long red hair and a purple seashell bra, and also has a beautiful singing voice. Athena is voiced by Lorelei Hill Butters (speaking) and by Andrea Robinson (singing).
5. What is the name of Ariel and Eric's princess daughter in the 2000 film sequel to 'The Little Mermaid'?

Answer: Melody

Melody is named after music, which brought her parents together. After all, Eric found Ariel's voice enchanting. In the 2000 film 'The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea', Melody is the main character, a human girl who wants to be a mermaid. In appearance, she has the dark hair and eyebrows of her father, Eric, but she has the long hair and fringe of her mother. In character, she is like her mother, Ariel, as she is mischievous, free spirited and headstrong. Melody is twelve in the film, which is why she wears a white camisole instead of a seashell bra. Her tail is bright red when she transforms into a mermaid.

Melody is voiced by Tara Strong.
6. In 'Robin Hood', Maid Marian is classed as royalty. But how?

Answer: She is the niece of King Richard.

As the niece of King Richard, Maid Marian is part of the royal family, yet not a princess. She is a vixen, and wears a modest outfit of pink and purple, with a turquoise stone at her throat. She is ladylike, kind and understanding. She also likes to play badminton with her friend and lady-in-waiting, Lady Kluck.

Maid Marian and Robin Hood apparently grew up together and were in love long before the movie began. However, she fears that Robin Hood has forgotten her, as they have been apart for so long. They are the only foxes to appear in 'Robin Hood', though she wants to have at least a dozen children!

Maid Marian is voiced by Monica Evans in this 1973 film. Her singing part is done by Nancy Adams.
7. When Simba becomes the King of Pride Rock in 'The Lion King' (1994), who becomes his bride?

Answer: Nala

As cubs, Nala and Simba were the best of friends. They would often get into trouble and go on adventures, despite the danger and the warnings from Mufasa and Zazu. Nala is a cream coloured lioness, with yellow and blue-green eyes. Although she does not approve of Simba's life in the jungle with Timon and Pumbaa, she obviously still feels a strong, and increasingly romantic, connection with him. The song 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' shows their changing feelings for each other.

Nala's first movie is 'The Lion King', although she also appears in the sequel 'The Lion King II: Simba's Pride' (1998) and the "midquel" 'The Lion King 1 1/2' (2004). Nala is voiced by Moira Kelly as an adult and by Niketa Calame as a cub. Sally Dworsky provides her singing voice.

Sarafina is Nala's mother, Sarabi is Simba's mother and Zira is the villain in the sequel.
8. Which Disney princess says "I'm not just a princess, you know. That's only half of who I am!" in her 1998 film?

Answer: Kiara

Kiara is the daughter of Simba and Nala, and appears in the film 'The Lion King II: Simba's Pride' in 1998. She is always reminded that she is a princess, especially by Timon and Pumbaa, who call her Princess Kiara and remind her that she is Simba's daughter and should be looked after. Kiara is very against this, as she does not feel like being a princess defines her. She is the one who says this quote to Timon and Pumbaa, as she wants to be able to hunt by herself. This takes place at the beginning of the film.

She is headstrong, curious and clever. She is also non-judgemental and trusts Kovu despite his shady background. Kiara looks like her mother, in that she's of a similar size and form, but her eyes are yellow and brown, like her father's. Her fur is also a similar colour to Simba's. As a young adult, she is voiced by Neve Campbell (speaking) and Liz Callaway (singing). As a cub, she is voiced by Michelle Horn (speaking) and Charity Sanoy (singing). Ashley Edner provides her lion growls as a cub.

Vitani is Zira's daughter. Tiana is from 'The Princess and the Frog' (2009) and is voiced by Anika Noni Rose.
9. If Zeus is the King of the Gods, Hercules would be a prince. What is the name of his love interest and potential princess?

Answer: Meg

'Hercules' (1997) is a film about the demigod Hercules who appears in Greek mythology. Hercules is the son of Zeus, the King of the Gods and the sky, and Hera, the Queen of the Gods and the goddess of marriage. He falls in love with Meg, a normal girl on Earth. However, in Greek mythology, Megara was actually the oldest daughter of Creon, King of Thebes.

Meg, or Megara, is a sassy and confident figure, who does not stand for any nonsense. She is independent and cynical, which is why Hercules is attracted to her. She has long dark hair and purple eyes, with an angular face and a thin, hourglass figure. She wears a long purple, Grecian dress with purple eyeshadow. Unlike other Disney characters, Meg has a dark secret which she hides from Hercules - she has made a deal with Hades, the God of the Underworld.

Meg is voiced by Susan Egan.

Jane is from 'Tarzan' (1999) and Clio and Thalia are two of the muses in 'Hercules'.
10. In 'Mulan II' (2004), Mulan has to help escort the Emperor's daughters to meet their husbands. The names of the royal children are Ting-Ting, Mei and Su.

Answer: True

The princesses are required to marry men they do not know, as requested by their father, the Emperor. They are very quiet, reserved and dignified at the start of the film, but then we realise that they are sad and regretful at not being able to marry the men that they love. Much like Kiara in 'The Lion King II: Simba's Pride', the girls do not want to be defined by their roles as princesses. This is seen in the song 'I Wanna Be Like Other Girls'. During the film, they fall in love with the three warriors from the first 'Mulan' film: Ling, Yao and Chien-Po.

Ting-Ting is the oldest, tallest and the most mature sister. Her favourite colour is purple. She falls in love with Ling. Mei is the middle sister, who loves pink and falls in love with Yao. Finally, Su is the youngest sister. She wears orange and is the most childish of the three. She likes Chien-Po.

'Mulan II' is the sequel to the 1998 film 'Mulan'. Mei is voiced by Lucy Liu (speaking) and Beth Blankenship (singing). Ting-Ting is voiced by Sandra Oh (speaking) and Judy Kuhn (singing). Su is voiced by Lauren Tom (speaking) and Mandy Gonzalez (singing).
