After successfully making their way through the Soviet chemical weapons facility, all James and Alec need is to set fire to gas tanks and make it to the landing strip and take a plane. The alarm sounds right as they are trying to leave, and the two must fight off militants.

While fighting off the militants, this is Alec's nod telling James to hurry. It is at this time that Alec is taken hostage and James has to figure their way out of this. He shortens the explosive charges from six minutes to three. Alec is promptly shot and James manages to escape from the facility alone.

Caroline, the psychiatrist, is sent to evaluate 007. They take a ride in his 1960s Aston Martin, where he proceeds to speed quite fiercely. It is then that he informs her driving this fast occurs more often than she observes. A Ferrari approaches, driven by Xenia Onatopp. They race down the mountain until Caroline forces him to stop the car.

James runs into Onatopp at the baccarat table and shares this with her. She counts baccarat and motoring, but is unable to figure out the third. Even though it is undisclosed, it is most likely smoking, as Onatopp is smoking at the table and the fact that James is known to have done so in the past.

James confronts Valentin Zukovsky, an Ex-KGB officer. Knowing Valentin can do so, he asks Valentin to set up a meeting between James and Janus, the unknown leader of a Russian crime syndicate. Valentin has never met him, but he knows the leader is a descendant of a Cossack, the group of Russians that worked for the Nazis during World War II.

Janus sends Xenia to kill James, but he overpowers her. Instead of killing her, he makes her take him to where Janus is. She does so, and then he says this to her before knocking her unconscious. James then gets out of the car to meet Janus.

It is here that we find out Alec Trevelyan is Janus, the two-faced Roman god "turned to life". One face a British agent, the other a Cossack descent trying to avenge them against Britain. His execution was faked, and he set up this criminal syndicate for revenge.

His face is badly scarred from the blast at the chemical facility, believing the explosives would blast at six minutes instead of three. James then becomes unconscious from a dart shot at him.

After regaining consciousness, James finds himself tied up in a helicopter with Natalya. The missiles are set to fire, and they do, but come back to hit the grounded helicopter, recognizing its heat signature. James is finally able to hit the escape button, where the two of them are sent into the air, avoiding the missiles.

After finding Alec, Xenia, and Ourumov on a Soviet missile train, James is put into a sticky situation. He has the chance to kill Xenia and Alec, or kill Ourumov, who is able to hold Natalya at gunpoint. He chooses to save the girl, but in doing so lets Xenia and Alec away. Xenia and Alec lock all of the doors, and he sends this over the radio to tell James there are explosives set to fire in three minutes, a jab at James because that's what he did to the timers at the chemical facility. James then has to use the laser in his watch to cut a hole in the floor while Natalya tracks them on the computer.

They narrowly escape from the blast.

After tracking Alec and the rest of the Janus crime syndicate to Cuba, James and Natalya are seen on camera trying to get inside the underground bunker. Growing impatient, Alec sends militants to find them and kill them, but James and Natalya are able to make it inside the bunker.
