Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the movie, who says the line "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."?

Answer: Henry Hill

At the beginning of "Goodfellas", Tommy, Henry, and Jimmy are all seen riding in a car. A thud comes from the trunk. They end up opening the trunk, and Tommy ends up stabbing a man who we later know to be Billy Bats. Then, in a narrative voice-over, Henry Hill is seen closing the trunk and says the line, "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."

Besides being a character in this movie played by Ray Liotta, Henry Hill was a real person who was associated with the Lucchese family. The reason he says the line "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." is because, as he explains in a flashback, he was involved with the family since he was a boy, and he knew from then that he wanted to devote his life to that.
2. What song is playing in the title scene of the movie?

Answer: Rags to Riches

One of Tony Bennett's first songs, "Rags to Riches", plays at the beginning of the movie. You can clearly hear the song playing in the background, right after the words "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.".

Since Henry Hill came from a low-income, below-middle-class family and eventually made a lot of money and got whatever he wanted, the song "Rags to Riches" describes his life pretty well, since he went from "rags to riches".
3. "Goodfellas" was based off a book by Nicholas Pileggi. What was the book called?

Answer: Wiseguy

In 1986, Nicholas Pileggi wrote a book called "Wiseguy", which was the story of Henry Hill's involvement in the Lucchese family from 1955-1980. The movie "Goodfellas" was based off the book, and the main actors involved (Liotta, Pesci, and De Niro) all talked to Pileggi for inspiration for their characters.
4. When a teenage Henry Hill sees Jimmy Conway for the first time, what is the first thing Jimmy puts in Henry's pocket?

Answer: Money

Henry Hill states that the first time he saw Jimmy, who couldn't have been more than 28-29 at the time, Jimmy was already pretty successful. He meets Jimmy, and Jimmy slips some money into Henry's pocket. A narrating Henry says that Jimmy did this to almost anybody.
5. When Henry comes back from beating Karen's neighbor, what does he give to her to hide?

Answer: A revolver

Karen calls Henry and tells him that her neighbor started harassing her, so Henry decides to go over to this guy's house. He beats him with the gun, and tells him he's dead if he touches her again. Then, he goes back home, hands Karen the revolver, and tells Karen to hide it.

In a voice-over, Karen says she knows women who would've gotten out of that kind of relationship the second their boyfriend handed them a gun, but she says she kinda liked it and wanted to stay.
6. When Tommy gets insulted by Billy Bats for his previous line of work, he goes off on him and eventually murders him. What does Bats tell Tommy to go home and "get" that makes him so angry?

Answer: his shine box

Billy Bats knows that Tommy used to shine shoes, but Tommy doesn't like when people bring it up. So, when Billy Bats starts talking about it just to mess with Tommy, Tommy gets mad. Billy Bats says to Tommy, "Go home and get your shine box," which makes Tommy start cursing him out. Tommy comes back later to the restaurant where Bats is and kills him for it.
7. What does Karen Hill say that Jimmy Conway's wife did when the cops came in to search the house?

Answer: Spat on the floor

Karen, in a voice-over, states that Jimmy Conway's wife would spit on her own floor in response to the cops showing up to search her house periodically. Karen always wondered why Mrs. Conway would spit on the floor of her own home.
8. The movie never shows Henry Hill killing anyone.

Answer: True

This is true that the movie never shows Henry Hill killing anyone. But, in real life, Henry Hill has said on "The Howard Stern Show" that he was ordered to kill three people for Jimmy Burke (Jimmy Conway in the movie). But, no one was killed by Henry in the actual movie; only by Tommy, Jimmy, or other characters.
9. When Henry Hill testifies in court, who are the two people he testifies against?

Answer: Jimmy Conway and Paul Cicero

Henry Hill became an FBI informant, and testified against Jimmy Conway and Paul Cicero in 1980. These two men had committed countless crimes of various degree, some with the aid of Henry. They committed murder, robbery, assault, etc. Henry was not convicted along with these men as long as he testified against them.

Henry was put into the witness protection program along with his wife Karen. This is true both in the movie and in real life.
10. Why is Tommy killed?

Answer: Revenge for killing Billy Bats

Tommy is shown entering a house, presumably for the "being-made" ceremony, when the family shoots him in the head from behind. This is because the family found out about Billy Bats' murder was committed by Tommy, and wanted revenge. When Jimmy Conway found out, he literally knocked over the phone booth next to him! Both Henry and Jimmy are angry, frustrated, and confused because having one of their own being made would mean they were basically made.
