Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For most of "Guys and Dolls", Nathan Detroit (played by Frank Sinatra) tries to find a venue for what?

Answer: crap game

"Guys and Dolls" is based on two short stories by NY writer Damon Runyon, "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and "Blood Pressure". Many of Runyon's characters were gamblers, gangsters and hustlers and the stories captured the era's unique way of speaking.
Throughout the movie, Nathan is desperately trying to find a place for his floating crap game. The orinal plan was to have it in a garage, but the owner wants 1000 dollars which Nathan doesn't have. As a result, he bets Sky Masterson the money that Sky cannot take the righteous leader of the Save A Soul mission to Havana.
2. Who wrote the music and lyrics for "Guys and Dolls"?

Answer: Frank Loesser

Frank Loesser also wrote the music and lyrics for "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and won an Oscar for the song "Baby It's Cold Outside". "Guys and Dolls" ran for more than 1200 performances in its initial Broadway run.
3. Who played the role of Sky Masterson in the movie, in what was his first singing role?

Answer: Marlon Brando

The role of Sky was played on Broadway by Robert Alda (father of Alan Alda). Also considered for the role was Gene Kelly, however MGM would not loan him out for the movie.
Marlon Brando is probably best known for his role as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" (for which he won an Oscar) as well as Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront". Widely considered one of the best actors of his generation, Brando passed away in 2004.
4. What actor played the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson in both the original Broadway production as well as in the movie version?

Answer: Stubby Kaye

Stubby Kaye started his career in vaudeville and went on to appear in many other films including "Cat Ballou", "Sweet Charity", and "Sex and the Single Girl". His final role was in the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".
5. What song, not in the Broadway show, was specifically written for Frank Sinatra, to beef up his part of Nathan Detroit?

Answer: Adelaide

Frank Sinatra resented Marlon Brando, who was not known for his singing ability, for getting the larger role. Sinatra frequently referred to Brando as "Mumbles", and Sinatra went on to record his own version of Brando's big singing number from the movie, "Luck Be a Lady".
6. What actress starred as the nightclub singer, desperate to be married, in the original Broadway production and also played the same role in the movie version?

Answer: Vivian Blaine

Vivian Blaine appeared in over 1200 performances of "Guys and Dolls" on Broadway. She also appeared in over 20 movies, and later guest starred on the shows "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat".
7. What "Law and Order" actor made his film debut as a barber shop customer in "Guys and Dolls"?

Answer: Jerry Orbach

The talented Jerry Orbach went on to play Sky Masterson in an off-Broadway revival of "Guys and Dolls", as well as creating the roles of Billy Flynn in "Chicago" and Julian Marsh in "42nd Street" on Broadway. Orbach passed away in December, 2004.
8. Who did the singing for Jean Simmons, in the role of Sister Sarah Brown?

Answer: She did the singing herself.

Known as a serious actress and not as a singer, Simmons took home her first Golden Globe for her portrayal of Sarah Brown in "Guys and Dolls". She went on to appear in "Spartacus", "The Grass is Greener" and "Elmer Gantry". Marni Nixon provided the singing voices for Audrey Hepurn in "My Fair Lady", Natalie Wood in "West Side Story" and Deborah Kerr in "the King and I".
9. The lyrics for five songs from the original Broadway show were omitted from the movie, although instrumental snippets from those songs can be heard in the score. Which of these songs was NOT omitted and included both lyrics and a great dance number?

Answer: Take Back Your Mink

Also left out of the movie were "More I Cannot Wish You" and "I've Never Been In Love Before". However, there were three songs written specifically for the movie, including: "Pet Me Poppa", "A Woman in Love", and "Adelaide". "Take Back Your Mink" was performed by Miss Adelaide and her Hot Box Dancers in both the Broadway show and the movie.
10. After Sister Sarah agrees to have dinner with Sky Masterson, where does he take her?

Answer: Havana, Cuba

Sky convinces Sarah to have dinner with him in Havana, by agreeing to provide "one dozen genuine sinners" for a prayer meeting, to help keep Sarah's Save a Soul Mission afloat. At the time, Havana was known for its incredible nightlife scene as well as its many music and dance clubs.

In Havana, Sarah imbibes too much rum and a hilarious dance sequence ensues, leading into the song "If I were a Bell".
