Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie began with a young boy running down a street in 1918 Harlem, New York. What was his name?

Answer: Quick

Actor Desi Arnez Hines II was only nine years old when "Harlem Nights" came out in 1989. He portrayed the young Quick, who was played as an adult by Eddie Murphy. Hines won a 1992 Young Artist Award for "Boyz n the Hood".
2. The young boy was running an errand for Richard Pryor's character named Ray. What was the boy carrying?

Answer: Cigarettes

The young Quick gained entry to "Ray's Place" by telling the huge door guard that he had "Mr. Raymond's cigarettes". He was promptly directed to "go on in the back".
3. What type of gambling game was Ray running when the young boy arrived?

Answer: Craps

In addition to gambling, "Ray's Place" was a house of prostitution. As young Quick made his way down a hall to the room where several men were playing dice, one could hear the voice of a madam telling a customer that his time was up.
4. What physical facial feature of one of the gamblers did Ray mock?

Answer: Teeth

The gambler was missing several of his upper front teeth, causing Pryor to refer to him as "snaggle-toothed". He also told him to "go home and brush that tooth".
5. Why did one of the gamblers threaten to stab Ray?

Answer: Ray's allowing the young boy in the room brought him bad luck.

The gambler bitterly protested the presence of the young Quick at the craps table, claiming that "kids bring me bad luck". Despite such objections, Ray insisted that the gambler throw the dice. Trying to make a point of six, and warning that "I better not throw craps", the player immediately threw a seven, losing his bet.
6. How did the gambler that held a knife to Ray's throat die?

Answer: Shot by the boy

As the enraged losing gambler held a switchblade to Ray's throat, Ray fumbled for a pistol underneath the craps table. A gunshot rang out and a bullet hole appeared in the knife-wielding gambler's forehead. Ray turned to see Quick with a smoking pistol in his hand, and commented that kids did bring the dead gambler bad luck.
7. Which of the following men did not help carry out the body of the dead gambler?

Answer: Jake

The three men had been at the dice table with the unfortunate murdered gambler. The dead man had previously referred to Redd Foxx's character as "frog-faced", "gravel-voiced" and "slow-moving".
8. In what manner was the dead gambler's body disposed?

Answer: Furnace

Ray enlisted the assistance of the other gamblers to remove the dead body from the craps table. Redd Foxx's character Bennie's voice was heard telling the men to "take it to the furnace".
9. What was Redd Foxx's character's nickname?

Answer: Snake Eyes

Bennie "Snake Eyes" Wilson had been running dice games for forty years. He claimed that he could call the dice before they stopped rolling.
10. When the young boy told Ray that both of his parents were dead, Ray offered to let the boy stay with him for a while. As they left the gambling room, what did Ray offer to buy the boy?

Answer: Ice cream

One must appreciate dark humor to laugh at the new foster-father's offer to buy ice cream for a boy who moments earlier blew a man's head off with a hand gun. After this scene, the film jumped twenty years into the future with an adult Eddie Murphy playing Quick.
