Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2003's 'Kill Bill Volume 1' and 2004's 'Kill Bill Volume 2', what was the name of the assassination group Beatrix Kiddo used to belong to?

Answer: Deadly Viper Assassination Squad

Each member of the group was aptly codenamed after a different snake, except Bill who was the Snake Charmer. Beatrix was known as the Black Mamba, appropriate since virtually all who crossed her died a bloody death. She sought revenge against her former colleagues from the squad who gatecrashed her wedding, killed everyone and left her comatose for four years.

Her desire to 'Kill Bill' was most potent, however; he as a former lover spurned was behind the gatecrashing.
2. '300', released in 2007, was based on which seemingly futile battle between the Greeks and the Persians?

Answer: Battle of Thermopylae

In the film, King Leonidas led 300 Spartans into battle against Xerxes and his army of over 300,000 men. Although he and the Spartans lost, Leonidas was able to draw blood from the God-like Xerxes and make a great dent in the Persian force through uncompromising tenacity and unwavering bravery.

Indeed, in real life, the Greeks lost this battle as in the film... but they did end up winning the war.
3. Which horrifying creature was featured in 1978's 'Dawn of the Dead'?

Answer: Zombie

In 'Dawn of the Dead', a mysterious plague caused the reanimation of corpses who would seek to eat human flesh. A small group of human survivors barricaded themselves in a Pennsylvanian shopping mall to try and survive the onslaught. The zombies were depicted as being brutal and savage; however, the psychological sense of being isolated from a potentially disintegrating society may have been more frightening.
4. In 2001's 'Pearl Harbor', which nation's troops bombed Pearl Harbor?

Answer: Japan

'Pearl Harbor' was a re-imagining of the very real Japanese naval attack on Hawaii's Pearl Harbor during World War II. After the raid, best friends Danny and Rafe were tasked with a secret mission to bomb Tokyo. Although the attack was a success, Danny died in Rafe's arms, reminding us that anyone can be taken in the ravages of war.
5. What famous Scottish hero did Mel Gibson portray in 1995's bloody 'Braveheart'?

Answer: William Wallace

'Braveheart' chronicled William Wallace and the Scots' struggle for independence against the English in the late 13th century. King Edward, nicknamed as Longshanks for his lofty height, took over Scotland when the former king died without leaving an heir.

Although William Wallace fought bravely in a bloody war, he did not succeed in taking back Scotland and was hung for his treason. However, his actions galvanised Robert the Bruce, in the Scottish royal bloodline, to take control of Scotland and establish its independence.
6. What significant event happened at the end of 2009's Biblically based 'Knowing'?

Answer: The Earth was incinerated

A solar flare destroyed the vast majority of Earth's lifeforms at the end of the film. This was believed to be a planned occurrence, as a young girl had written a list of predicted disasters and their death toll, which all came to fruition. The last entry predicted that 'everyone else' would die, and although the protagonists of the film initially attempted to find shelter underground, it was a futile endeavour. Near the end of the movie, aliens took two of each animal to a new planet, perhaps in mirroring the Biblical tale of Noah's Ark.
7. In what 2007 release starring Will Smith did a cure for cancer mutate, killing 90% of society and turning most of the survivors into vampiric monsters?

Answer: I Am Legend

Will Smith played a virologist called Robert Neville in the film, and his aim was to find a cure for the mutated virus. His only companion was Sam, his faithful dog. Eventually, Sam would die in a brave skirmish with the vampiric Darkseekers. Robert, too, would die in sacrifice to the Darkseekers, but not before giving an antidote to the virus to a human survivor he met shortly after Sam's death.

His sacrifice was to be held as a legend, hence the title of the film.
8. In 2008's literary based 'The Hunger Games', what was the object of the games for the 24 participants?

Answer: To fight to the death leaving one survivor

Based on Suzanne Collins' book of the same name, 'The Hunger Games' was like a cross between the Roman gladiatorial battles and the reality TV show 'Survivor' (2000). The 24 participants were teenagers, broadly speaking. One boy and girl from 12 poor nations surrounding the wealthy and dominant Capitol were chosen to fight in a literal battle to the death for entertainment purposes.

Whilst the typical rules only mandated that one would survive, the last two survivors (and protagonists of the story) threatened to commit suicide and were both allowed to survive.

This was an act of defiance against those in power, but also an act of loyalty to each other, as they were childhood friends.
9. In 1999's 'The Mummy', what ancient Egyptian text was used by accident to resurrect the malevolent Imhotep?

Answer: Book of the Dead

Evelyn, an Egyptologist, came across Imhotep on an expedition to Thebes. After reading a page from the Book of the Dead later by accident, Imhotep rose from the dead. In a twisted version of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' (1597), Imhotep's desires transcended time - he wanted to revive his old lover, Anck-Su-Namun, and wreak havoc on humanity.

Whilst he succeeded at reviving his partner, he was thwarted by the use of the Book of Amun-Ra and plunged into the River of Death... although that wasn't quite the end of Imhotep's tale in this franchise.
10. In 1999's 'The Sixth Sense', what special ability did troubled young Cole Sear possess?

Answer: Able to see and talk to the dead

The title of this quiz may have provided a hint here, as "I See Dead People" was a quote uttered within this very film. Although Cole's ability was important, the child psychologist Malcolm Crowe's story was just as integral to the plot. Indeed, he was closer to the land of the spirits than many would assume at first glance; his previous patient had shot both himself and Malcolm. Working with Cole helped him to come to terms with understanding his previous patient and in resting his guilt over not being able to solve his problems.

This gave him the peace he needed to leave the mortal coil, as his biggest problem was now solved.
