Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the voice of the giant?

Answer: Vin Diesel

The Giant was scary at first, but after the accident at the power plant, he became gentle and nice, not to mention amnesic. He didn't know who or what he was or where he came from. Because Hogarth helped him, the Giant followed Hogarth everywhere. Harry Connick Jr. was the voice of Dean. John Mahoney was the voice of General Rogard, and Christopher McDonald was the voice of Kent Mansley. Vin Diesel ("The Pacifier", "Chronicles of Riddick" and "xXx") was in fact the voice of the Giant.
2. What was Hogarth's last name?

Answer: Hughes

Hogarth was the name of the main character in the movie, the little boy who befriended the Giant. Hogarth was a well-behaved kid. He was smart - it was mentioned that he skipped a grade - and he liked adventure. Rogard was the name of the general. Kent Mansley was the government agent, "I'm Kent Mansley I work for the government." Jennifer Aniston was the voice of Annie Hughes (Hogarth's mom).
3. Near the beginning of the movie - what happened to Kent Mansley's car?

Answer: The giant ate it.

Mansley was the government agent who had been sent to investigate the explosion at the power plant, and other incidents. At the beginning of the movie, Mansley left his car alone, when he came back to it, the giant had taken a bite out of it. He left to get a witness and when he came back the car was gone; the giant had eaten the whole thing.

It was nearer the end of the movie when he rear-ended the military truck in front of him.
4. Who or what did Kent Mansley work for?

Answer: The government

Though it was true that he served under General Rogard and reported to him, the correct answer was the government. In the movie, he clearly said, "I'm Kent Mansley. I work for the government." Dean was the owner of the junk yard. Kent was the antagonist in the movie, he wanted to destroy the Giant, and at the very end, almost got everyone in the town killed. Kent Mansley was sent by the government to investigate the explosion at the power plant, and other unexplained occurrences happening in the town.
5. What did Hogarth's mom do for a living?

Answer: She was a waitress at a café.

You first saw her behind the counter in the café she worked in, and you saw her serving coffee at one point in the scene. Also she was in her uniform throughout most of the movie. Her role was basically just a mom, she worried about Hogarth, yelled at him and tried to provide for him.

She was the one who rented Kent Mansley, the government agent, a room in the Hogarth residence, thus giving him better access to Hogarth.
6. What was the name of the Metal Menace?

Answer: Atomo

The Metal Menace or Atomo, was a character from a comic book that was mentioned several times in the movie. Atomo was a villain, and he was mentioned to show the Giant's struggle between who he would choose to be (Superman) and what he was programed to be (a defensive weapon, a villain, like Atomo).
7. Finish the line. "You are who _______ ?"

Answer: you choose to be.

It was Hogarth's line, he said it to the Giant near the end of the movie. The military had been shooting at the Giant, who, reacting to the gun and the misconception that Hogarth was dead, shot back at them with lasers and other highly advanced weapons. Hogarth was trying to get the Giant to remember who he was and stop it from killing anyone so the military wouldn't destroy it.
8. What would cause the giant to become violent?

Answer: Guns

It was one of Dean's lines, "It's defensive, it reacted to the gun." Hogarth, Dean, and the Giant had been in the junkyard. Hogarth and the Giant had been playing a game. Hogarth had a toy gun, he pointed it at the Giant and lasers shot out of the Giant's eyes. Dean accused the Giant of being "a big gun" and told him to leave.

After Hogarth went after the Giant, Dean found the toy gun and realized what had happened.
9. Toward the beginning of the movie, what kind of film was Hogarth's class watching?

Answer: Duck and Cover film

During the Cold War, with the looming threat of the Russian atomic bombs, students were made to watch "duck and cover" films. This basically told them that they would be safe from the effects of the atomic bomb if they ducked, and even safer if they found some kind of cover to duck under.
10. What was the name of the character who was the first person to see the Giant at the very beginning of the movie?

Answer: Earl Stutz

Earl Stutz only appeared in two scenes in the movie, but he had a very important role. He was the first to see the Giant, and he was the one who called the government, and got Mansley involved. M. Emmet Walsh was the voice of this character. Eli Marienthal was the voice of Hogarth, and Eli Martin is one of my good friends, but he has never starred in a movie.
