They made five films together: "Show People" in 1928, "Ladies Must Live" in 1921, and three in 1918, "One Dollar Bid", "Three X Gordon" and "Wedlock". John and Leatrice were married for a short time and had one daughter, Leatrice Joy Gilbert. She later wrote a biography on her father entitled "Dark Star".

When Leo returns, he finds that Ulrich has married Felicitas. Not deterred by marriage, she resumes her relationship with Leo, but doesn't want to give up Ulrich. All of this culminates in the childhood friends arranging a duel.

They decide it is foolish to fight and forgive each other. On her way to stop the duel, Felicitas falls through an ice covered lake and drowns. So no one ends up with her. On the set of this movie is where the real sparks between Gilbert and Garbo began.
