quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the 3 Ludlow brothers, from oldest to youngest?

Answer: Alfred, Tristan, Samuel

Aidan Quinn plays Alfred, the intense and jealous oldest sibling. Brad Pitt plays Tristan, wild, rebellious and in tune with nature. Samuel, the baby, naive and sheltered, is played by Henry Thomas.
2. Who plays Colonel William Ludlow?

Answer: Anthony Hopkins

Colonel Ludlow, disillusioned with the government and abandoned by his blue-blooded wife, raises his three boys in the mountains of Montana with the help of a few ranch hands and Native American friends.
3. Where is Susannah from?

Answer: Boston

Susannah met Samuel at a Harvard tea party, and according to his mother Isabelle, the two fell instantly in love and became engaged. But, according to One Stab in the movie, she was like water that froze inside of a piece of rock. When the water freezes, the rock shatters. Though it is not exactly her fault, she almost destroys the entire Ludlow clan.
4. When Tristan comes back to the ranch after breaking the mare and his brothers and Susannah are playing tennis, what does Tristan say they all look like?

Answer: ice cream cones

Tristan was the most impetuous and wild of the boys. He spends a great deal of the movie wandering, desperate to get over the death of Samuel.
5. Which war do the boys enlist to fight, thoroughly angering their father?

Answer: World War I

Tristan basically enlists to look over Samuel, who desperately wanted to become a hero. After being protected for his entire life, Samuel was probably looking for glorious distinction. What he found was death at the hands of the enemy; blinded by poisonous gases and trapped by barbed wire, Samuel was shot by German machine gun fire at very close range.
6. What does Tristan remove from his brother's body, after killing the Germans at the machine gun?

Answer: heart

One Stab, narrating the film, explains in the beginning that he taught Tristan to remove the heart of a kill to release its spirit.
7. Alfred tells Susannah that he loves her at Samuel's gravesite.

Answer: True

Alfred states that he reveals his feelings here because of his respect for his youngest brother, but he is crushed when Susannah tells him that she doesn't think that she could ever love him.
8. Colonel Ludlow could sense Tristan's return from the war before Tristan could be seen from the ranch.

Answer: False

Colonel Ludlow was teaching Isabelle II when Tristan rode home. It was One Stab who could sense Tristan's arrivals. It is especially dramatic, as he returns from his many years as a hunter, when One Stab yells "Tristan!" as Brad Pitt's character gallops toward the ranch, followed by several wild horses.
9. Where was Alfred heading on the morning of Tristan's return from the war?

Answer: into town

Alfred was walking down the stairs and asked Susannah if she would like to join him on a ride into town. Alfred did not look altogether thrilled at his younger brother's homecoming.
10. Complete these lines: Alfred: "You cannot make her happy." Tristan: "I'm gonna try." Alfred: "You will _______."

Answer: fail

Tristan and Alfred almost come to blows during this conversation. Alfred accuses his brother of conveniently moving in on the late Samuel's grieving fiancee (when he himself was doing much the same thing, unsuccessfully of course). Tristan tells him that he will forgive Alfred that statement ONCE, because he understood that Alfred loved Susannah. If Alfred were to say it again, Tristan told him "we're not brothers."
11. For what city does Alfred leave the ranch?

Answer: Helena

Alfred instantly becomes a success in the city. He states, in a narrative letter to his mother, that he finally felt at home. Alfred hooks up with the O'Banion brothers and opens a livestock and feed business.
12. Back at the ranch, Susannah and Tristan are very much an item. But Tristan begins to again slip down the slippery slope toward madness. What does he see trapped in barbed wire that begins to push him toward the edge?

Answer: a cow

Tristan struggled to free the animal, which screamed and squirmed, but he just could not untangle all of the wire. He finally shot the cow, putting her out of her misery, but the scene was just too reflective of Samuel's death overseas. Tristan's wildness begins to surface more and more. He even points a knife at Susannah one morning in their bed.
13. Tristan decides that he must leave for a time. Susannah tells him that she will wait for him forever. As he rides away, Susannah and Colonel Ludlow exchange a few words. Susannah asks if Tristan will ever return. With what does the boys' father reply?

Answer: "I don't know."

They don't ever exactly tell you how long Tristan is gone, but I believe it's about 6 years. Much happens at home while he is gone, some good, but mostly very bad.
14. Alfred comes home one day to ask his father's blessing as he runs for political office. What position does Alfred pursue?

Answer: U.S. Congressman

As previously mentioned, Colonel Ludlow became extremely disenchanted with the government, so he was less than thrilled that Alfred wanted to become a part of it. But, of course, he does not forbid Alfred's candidacy.
15. As Alfred was leaving, he saw Susannah on the porch, crying over a letter sent to her from Tristan. It stated: "All we had is dead As I am dead. _____ ______." What was the last sentence of the note?

Answer: marry another

Colonel Ludlow comes outside and a huge argument takes place between father and son. Colonel Ludlow tells Alfred to back off, that she is to be Tristan's wife (he obviously had not read the letter). Alfred replies that Tristan used Susannah, then abandoned her, while Alfred loved her and loves her still.
