Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This movie, which is filmed on location, takes place in what quaint southern town?

Answer: Savannah, GA

We are first introduced to Savannah on a bus ride into the city where the main character learns some history about the town. "Welcome to Savannah!"
2. What is the main character's name?

Answer: John Kelso

The main character is a writer from New York covering an annual Christmas party for Town & Country magazine.
John Cusack plays "that Yankee", John Kelso. John Berendt wrote the book.
3. What is unusual about Mr. Glover's walking Patrick?

Answer: Patrick died two years after Mr. Bowen and Mr. Glover walks an empty leash.

Mr. Glover, a law firm porter, is paid $15 a week to walk Mr. Bowen's labrador, Patrick, in accordance to Mr. Bowen's will.
When the writer asks Jim why Mr. Glover doesn't walk the university mascot, Uga, instead, the reply is "Well ... then who would walk Patrick?"
4. After the Christmas party, the writer is awakened by sirens. When he investigates why, we learn his gracious host "Jim Williams shot somebody." Whom did Jim shoot?

Answer: Billy

Jim Williams hired Billy to work part-time in his auto shop. Billy is known to get drunk and/or high and when he does, he becomes a different person. On the night Jim shoots Billy, Billy has been drinking, becomes belligerent and threatens Jim with first a broken bottle - which is witnessed by the writer - and later with a gun.
5. Our writer decides to investigate the background of this story with the intent of writing a book. One colorful character rejects his initial request for an interview, claiming to be a "lady in mourning." What is her name?

Answer: Lady Chablis

The Lady Chablis Deveau, who plays herself in the movie, is a very flamboyant character whom we can't help but love. She has a very popular night club act in Savannah, where she sings and does comedy.
6. When Luther doesn't eat, the waitress in the diner hollers, "Luther's not eatin'!" What bit of advice does she give the writer?

Answer: Let's just put it this way, if I were you, I wouldn't drink the water today.

Our writer is having breakfast in the diner when he meets Luther Driggers, who has live horse flies tied to his sweater and carries a small, brown vial.
Although an explanation is never given as to why Luther is carrying around the brown vial, the waitress tells us that he says it's enough poison to kill everyone in the county, and I thought the flies were an interesting way to announce to the world that one is just plain weird.
7. Jim Williams takes the writer into the garden of good and evil where they meet Minerva, the wife of the late Dr. Louis Buzzard, "the foremost VooDoo practitioner in Beaufort County." What does Minerva instruct Jim to do?

Answer: Write the departed's name seven times on a piece of paper, fold it twice, and put it in his pocket.

He must also get a picture and sew the mouth closed with birds' blood and beg his forgiveness every single day. "To unnerstand the livin', you got to commune with the dead."
8. The night before the annual Christmas party, we meet Mandy Nicholls, with whom the writer develops a relationship. She becomes his tour guide to Savannah and eventually his assistant in obtaining answers to the shooting mystery. Who plays Mandy?

Answer: Alison Eastwood

At the end of the movie, we learn that the relationship between John and Mandy becomes serious enough to keep John in Savannah longer than temporarily. Incidentally, Alison Eastwood, Clint Eastwood's daughter, also sang the title song at the beginning and end of the movie.
9. Sonny Seiler, Jim Williams' attorney, is played by Jack Thompson. The real Sonny had a part in the movie, as well. What role did Sonny Seiler play?

Answer: Judge Samuel White

Sonny Seiler was Jim William's attorney throughout all four original trials, each time working diligently to prove Jim's innocence. There were three mistrials before Sonny could prove that the police department did a shoddy job of collecting evidence and Sonny finally succeeded at obtaining a not guilty verdict at the fourth trial.
10. John follows a hunch to the morgue and discovers a relevant piece of evidence. What does he find?

Answer: all of the above

Sonny uses this as his defense of "shoddy police work" to get a not guilty verdict. This is not before Jim "confesses" to John the truth behind the shooting.
