Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Might one bind sun-brown hero of 'Sleepy Hollow', initially, to sinking ship? (1997)

Answer: Titanic

Bind = tie
Sun-brown = tan
The hero of 'Sleepy Hollow' is Ichabod Crane, initially = I.C.

Together, tie+tan+I.C. gives us 'Titanic', the spelling differences indicated by 'might'.

James Cameron's retelling of the 1912 disaster, introducing the love story between Jack and Rose (Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet), gained much acclaim and numerous awards, including eleven Oscars. Though 'Titanic' was a commendable effort by all involved, my personal favourite on the subject remains 'A Night to Remember'.
2. Does Henry Fonda western feature a male witch? (1959)

Answer: Warlock

The 'Warlock' of the title is not a contemporary of Harry Potter at Hogwarts, but a small town that hired gunman Clay Blaisdell (Fonda) as marshal, to deal with a gang of ruffians who had the town under their thumb. Not all of the townspeople were happy with this arrangement, and violence ensued. (Double definition clue.)
3. Anwar locks the door, and sees Fonda western again. (1959)

Answer: Warlock

The answer is hidden in the sentence: anWAR LOCKs, the word 'sees' indicating this. The word 'again' is the clue that this is the film that is the answer to two different questions.

The cast of 'Warlock' included Richard Widmark, Anthony Quinn and Dorothy Malone, in addition to Fonda. Edward Dmytryk directed.
4. Taxi and French headless saloon turn around to produce this musical. (1972)

Answer: Cabaret

Taxi = cab
The French word for and is 'et'. A saloon is a bar, and headless indicates you should drop the first letter. 'Turn around' indicates an anagram, which gives us: CAB + ET + AR, anagrammed to give 'Cabaret'.

The film was set in Berlin in the 1930s, and starred Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, as the deliciously evil Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Club. Songs included 'Cabaret', 'Money, Money' and the chilling, but lovely, 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me'.
5. Did Depp police a drowsy valley? (1999)

Answer: Sleepy Hollow

This is a fairly straightforward substitution of synonyms for the words in the title. Drowsy is another word for sleepy, and in geographic terms, a hollow is a valley.

Johnny Depp starred as Constable Ichabod Crane (the 'police' clue) in this version of Washington Irving's tale involving a headless horseman and his exploits. Christina Ricci also starred, and Tim Burton directed.
6. Olivier and Gibson both played this small village prince. (1948; 1990)

Answer: Hamlet

A hamlet is a small village, and 'Hamlet' was Prince of Denmark.

Shakespeare's tragedy has been filmed many times. Lord Olivier's 1948 production, which he also directed, won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the then Sir Laurence. The Mel Gibson vehicle, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, was less successful, receiving two Oscar nominations, but winning neither.
7. Switzerland, briefly, and short electrical unit charged atom to make Kirk Douglas a winner. (1949)

Answer: Champion

The abbreviation for Switzerland, derived from Confederacio Helvetica, and used as a suffix for Swiss websites and for nationality stickers on cars, is CH.
The electrical unit here is 'ampere', shortened to 'amp', and a charged atom is an 'ion'.

CH+amp+ion gives us 'Champion'.

In 'Champion', Douglas played boxer 'Midge' Kelly whose rise to World Champion from humble beginnings was told in flashback. Douglas was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, but lost out to Broderick Crawford in 'All the King's Men'.
8. Did Julie Andrews play jolly-sounding soft drink fasteners (perhaps) in this Disney musical?

Answer: Mary Poppins

Another word for jolly is merry, and 'jolly-sounding' indicates the almost-homonym Mary. Another word for a soft drink is 'pop' and 'pins' are one type of fasteners, giving us 'Mary Poppins'.

Julie won the Best Actress Oscar for playing the magical nanny that the Banks children ordered up.'Chim Chim Cheree', sung by Dick Van Dyke as Bert, the chimney sweep, won for Best Original Song.
9. Endlessly attempt to extract legal payment for every male person to see this comic book adventure? (1978)

Answer: Superman

To attempt to extract legal payment is to sue. The word 'endlessly' indicates that only the letters 'su' are to be used.
For every = per
Male person = man

Su+per+man gives us 'Superman'.

Christopher Reeve played the superhero, and Gene Hackman was his adversary Lex Luthor in this adventure story based on the popular comic book hero. Reeve went on to play the role in three sequels before the riding accident that left him paralysed in 1995. I was saddened to learn, whilst doing the research for this quiz, that he had passed away suddenly in October 2004, of a heart attack.
10. Did vampire wrinkle nose at fur? (1922)

Answer: Nosferatu

This is an anagram of 'nose at fur', indicated by the word 'wrinkle'.

The German classic 'Nosferatu' or 'Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens' to give it its full original title, was the forerunner of all the later vampire movies, including 'Dracula'. Although based on Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' story, the vampire in this silent film was called Count Orlok (played by Max Schreck) and other changes were made for legal reasons.
