Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jay Baruchel plays a "special" character who works out at the gym. What is the name of the character who appears mentally challenged?

Answer: Danger Barch

Poor Danger Barch can't even afford decent clothes or pay his gym dues...but he holds a special place in the heart of Scrap.

Jay Baruchel starred in the 2001 cult favorite TV series "Undeclared" as college freshman, Steven Karp.
2. Frankie and Scrap have a discussion about the purchase of a product used at the gym. Frankie says... "Why can't you just buy the cheap stuff, you always have to buy the expensive stuff." What item are they discussing?

Answer: bleach

Scrap uses the bleach to clean up at the gym, in particular, to clean and disinfect the boxing ring.

The dialog continues:
Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris: "It smells better, Frankie."
Frankie Dunn: "Bleach smells like bleach."

Funny stuff! It's odd to think that Frankie is the penny pincher, yet, Scrap doesn't even replace holey socks.
3. Who is the "Narrator" for Million Dollar Baby?

Answer: Scrap

We hear Scrap's voice throughout the movie, and then at the end, we learn that the voice over is in the form of a letter that he writes to Frankie's daughter. Even though Scrap never sees Frankie again, Scrap wants to write to Frankie's daughter to let her know "what kind of man her father was".

The use of Scrap as the narrator is different from the story upon which it is based.
The screenplay was written by Paul Haggis which was adapted from the book "Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner" by F.X. Toole. Toole's is a pseudonym for cut man and long time boxing manager Jerry Boyd.
4. How does Maggie attempt to commit suicide?

Answer: tries to bite off her tongue

Maggie becomes paralyzed in her final fight, is hospitalized indefinitely and then she loses a leg to bedsores. Maggie tries to kill herself after asking Frankie to help her end her life. At first he doesn't agree but he continues to struggle with his decision.

One of the most powerful monologues in the movie is Maggie explaining to Frankie why she wants to die.

"I can't be like this, Frankie. Not after what I've done. I've seen the world. People chanted my name. Well, not my name, some damn name you gave me. They were chanting for me. I was in magazines. You think I ever dreamed that'd happen? I was born two pounds, one-and-a-half ounces. Daddy used to tell me I'd fight my way into this world, and I'd fight my way out. That's all I wanna do, Frankie. I just don't wanna fight you to do it. I got what I needed. I got it all. Don't let 'em keep taking it away from me. Don't let me lie here 'till I can't hear those people chanting no more."
5. In an early scene in the movie, an ad for a 21st century TV show appears on the side of a bus, when we first learn that Maggie is living in Los Angeles. What TV show is promoted in the ad?

Answer: The Apprentice

"The Apprentice" first appeared on NBC in 2004. It is a reality TV based show in which contestants compete for a job as an apprentice to billionaire Donald Trump.
6. What is the name of the fighter whom Frankie is training at the beginning of the movie, before Maggie?

Answer: Willie

Willie wants a shot at a title fight, and Frankie won't give him one. That's why Willie drops Frankie as his manager, and why Frankie starts training Maggie in the first place.
Mike Colter plays Big Willie Little.
7. A touch that shows this movie takes place in the 21st century is the car that Maggie and Frankie are riding in. What kind of car does Frankie own?

Answer: 2003 Impala

8. What phrase does Frankie use continuously to Maggie and Scrap to explain why he his not interested in being her manager?

"I don't train girls", trainer Frankie Dunn growls. But something is definitely different about the spirited boxing, Maggie, who shows up daily at Dunn's gym. All she wants is a fighting chance.
9. Frankie was Scrap's manager, 25 years ago. In what number fight did Scrap refuse to let Frankie to throw in the towel despite Frankie's pleas, and thus caused Scrap to lose one eye and end his boxing career?

Answer: 109

Frankie feels guilty because he didn't stop Scrap in his 109th fight. But Scrap gets to win fight number 110 at the Hit Pit when he flattens Shawrelle Berry for his teasing/beating of Danger Barch. Scrap shines when he utters "110," after Shawrelle hits the mat.
10. Throughout "Million Dollar Baby" there is a back story of Frankie's estranged relationship with his daughter. What is her name?
