Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the attack fails, the division commander who ordered the attack insists on trying 3 men for cowardice. Can you name it?

Answer: Paths of Glory

Stanley Kubrick's 1957 masterpiece, "Paths of Glory", vividly demonstrates the contrasts between life for the common soldiers and the generals. When General Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) orders General Mireau (George Macready) to have one of his regiments assault the German-held "Anthill", he all but admits that the High Command knows that the task is impossible, but orders it anyway.

As shown in the film, it is the common soldier who suffers. General Mireau has three men tried for cowardice. The men are defended by Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas), who was a famous trial lawyer before the war. Colonel Dax soon learns that the verdict is a foregone conclusion.
2. What is this movie called? The film is a dramatization of the D-Day landings on the French coast in June, 1944. Answer: The Longest Day

Released in 1962 and based on the novel by Cornelius Ryan, "The Longest Day" is a star-studded, action packed, accurate retelling of the Normandy landings. Touching on the experiences of all the major combatants, the film accurately captures the fear and confusion of both Allied and German troops.

The film used military advisers from both sides, including men who had fought in the actual battle.
3. Do you know the name of this movie? It is a depiction of the December, 1944 German offensive against the Western Allies in Belgium. Answer: Battle of the Bulge

Released in 1965, "Battle of the Bulge" stars Henry Fonda, Robert Ryan, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, and Robert Shaw, who plays a hard-nosed German Panzer commander. As in the movie "Patton", post World War II tanks are used to depict both German and American armor.

The actual battle took place in a hilly, heavily wooded area, while this film portrays the climactic tank battle as taking place on open plains. The film is still very watchable and has some decent performances.

Answer: Enemy at the Gates

A heavily fictionalized tale of a true incident during the Battle of Stalingrad, "Enemy at the Gates" is the story of Vasily Zaitsev, one of the most successful Soviet snipers of World War II. While most of the story is dramatized, the skill and bravery of the snipers is shown, as is the desperation of the fighting in the city.

The film stars Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, and Ed Harris
