Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What horror was Earth facing in the 1957 monster film "Beginning of the End?"

Answer: giant grasshoppers

Mutated by eating radioactive wheat, the giant grasshoppers headed for Chicago and went on a feeding frenzy; instead of the famous Chicago Pizza they ate people. Peter Graves was the star.
2. What prehistoric creature wreaked havoc on New York City in a 1953 film?

Answer: Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

Atomic testing woke up this huge prehistoric monster. A lot of familiar faces in this film: Ross Elliott, King Donovan, Lee Van Clef, and others. Godzilla stayed in Japan. The Giant Behemoth gave London a hard time.
3. Who was the Sweden-born actor that played Lobo in the 1955 film "Bride of the Monster?"

Answer: Tor Johnson

Pro wrestler Tor Johnson also appeared in the Ed Wood classic "Plan 9 From Outer Space". He did not receive an Oscar nomination for either of these films. This might even be worse than "Plan 9".
4. In the 1957 film "The Amazing Colossal Man" ,Lt. Manning falls from what famous structure?

Answer: Hoover Dam

A fairly good film in the era of sci-fi giants. There was an actual story line as (plutonium blast survivor) Lt. Manning's condition worsened and he went from hero to menace. Did he live? Did he die? Well... in 1958 there was a sequel.
5. There was a sequel to the 1957 film "The Amazing Colossal Man". What was the title?

Answer: War of the Colossal Beast

In this 1958 film Glenn Lang has been replaced by Dean Parkin in the role of Colonel Manning. This was Parkin's second, and final acting role. The role didn't require much acting as Manning had no dialogue and mainly just walked around snarling and terrorizing the countryside.
6. Before finding fame as Little Joe on "Bonanza", Michael Landon played the title character in what '50s film favorite?

Answer: I Was A Teenage Werewolf

This 1957 film also included appearances by Guy Williams (as a police officer) and James Best. In 1957 Whit Bissell, who costarred as the evil doctor, appeared in 15 different television series and seven movies including the film "I Was A Teenage Frankenstein". A busy fellow indeed!
7. The 1954 movie "Creature From the Black Lagoon" was so well received that two more creature films were made. What was the third film of this trilogy?

Answer: The Creature Walks Among Us

In 1956 this creature film made the big screen. Clearly low-budget, this effort used footage from the first two films for all of the underwater sequences. Less creature action and a dull "romance" thread ended the series. This third (and final) "creature" film was the first NOT released in 3D.
8. What 1958 film classic starred Steve McQueen, and featured a theme song co-written by Burt Bacharach?

Answer: The Blob

The theme song "The Blob" was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David. As recorded by The Five Blobs it reached number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Making her movie debut playing Steve's girlfriend, was Aneta Corsaut. Corsaut is probably best known for her role as Helen Crump in 66 episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show".
9. The trailer for the 1957 film "KRONOS" describes Kronos as "an awesome monster such as human eyes have never seen". Wow! Just what WAS "Kronos"?

Answer: a gigantic robot

KRONOS was sent to Earth,by beings from a distant world to absorb all of Earth's energy. This energy was somehow going to be sent back to their planet. KRONOS was far from awesome. The star of KRONOS, Jeff Morrow, later that same year starred in the sci-fi classic "The Giant Claw".
10. In 1953 Richard Carlson starred in the 3-D horror/mystery film "The Maze". What was the horror found at the end of the hedge maze?

Answer: a gigantic frog

The frog isn't evil... he is the 203-year-old "master of the estate" who was the victim of a mysterious birth defect. The film's star, Richard Carlson, starred in the monster/sci-fi classics "It Came From Outer Space" and "Creature From The Black Lagoon".
