Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Guys And Dolls" (1955), starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra, is an odd combination of gangsters and the Salvation Army. Complete this lyric from the song, "Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat": "...and the devil will drag you under ________ your checkered coat. And the people all said 'sit down, sit down you're rockin' the boat'."

Answer: by the sharp lapels of

This is the final song of the movie, sung by Nicely Nicely Johnson (Stubby Kaye) at the mission. Nicely Nicely is the character who leads the way for all the other sinners to repent, by singing this song and, in doing so, they save Sister Sarah's mission. Frank Sinatra apparently really wanted to play the part Marlon Brando played, but lost out.
2. "Cabaret" (1972) is my personal favourite film of all time. Fill in the blank in this lyric: "Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! Leave your troubles outside. So life is disappointing, forget it! In here life is beautiful. The girls are beautiful. Even ____ ."

Answer: the orchestra is beautiful

This is from the opening and closing song, "Wilkommen", performed at the Kit Kat Klub and sung by Joel Grey. The song welcomes the audience (literal and figurative), introduces all the main characters and suggests, a little ironically, that you "leave your troubles outside" and prepare yourself for a good time. For trivia lovers Joel Grey is the father of Jennifer Grey who played Baby in "Dirty Dancing".
3. "Funny Girl" (1968) starring Barbra Streisand caused some controversy when it was made, because it partnered Jewish Barbra with her Egyptian co-star. Who was he?

Answer: Omar Sharif

He plays Nick Arnstein ("Nicky Arnstein, Nicky Arnstein, what a beautiful, beautiful name!"). Omar Sharif also starred in "Dr. Zhivago" and "Lawrence Of Arabia". In 1963 he was nominated for an Academy Award for his part in the latter.
4. We all know "West Side Story" (1961) is based on Shakespeare's "Romeo And Juliet", but which two names does the film substitute for Shakespeare's leading roles?

Answer: Tony and Maria

These parts were played by Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood, neither of whom received any awards or nominations for their roles. However, George Chakiris (Bernardo) and Rita Moreno (Anita) won both Oscars and Golden Globes for their supporting roles.
5. "My Fair Lady" (1964) is based on the play "Pygmalion" written by which playwright?

Answer: George Bernard Shaw

The music was written by Frederick Loewe, who also wrote the music for "Paint Your Wagon", "Brigadoon" and "Gigi". All the lyrics for the songs were taken directly from George Bernard Shaw's original play and set to music.
6. Rat Pack member Dean Martin sang and acted the part of Sportin' Life in "Porgy and Bess" (1959)?

Answer: False

It was actually Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr. who played this role. However, for contractual reasons, Sammy Davis Jr.'s voice could not be used on the soundtrack. Instead, the songs were recorded by Cab Calloway, who has also appeared in "The Blues Brothers".
7. Which of these is *NOT* one of Maria's "Favourite Things" according to the song in "The Sound Of Music" (1965)?

Answer: strawberry tarts with sugar and cream

This is one of the many memorable songs in this film, sung by Julie Andrews and all the children. It takes place during the thunderstorm scene, which leads to the children bonding with their new governess and many happy adventures! For trivia lovers, here's an extra little piece of random trivia: in Spain this film, is known as "The Rebellious Nun"!
8. "Singing In The Rain" (1952) is the classic feel good musical. In the memorable dance sequence to the title song, Gene Kelly really does sing in the rain. However the 'rain' wasn't showing up on the camera very well, and the filmmakers had to add a substance to the water so that the cameras could see it. What was this substance?

Answer: milk

I bet after a while that set smelled really good! The combination of water and milk caused Kelly's wool suit to shrink. Did you know that Gene Kelly had a 103 degree fever when he danced in this scene?
9. "42nd Street" (1933) is all about the attempts of a theatre to put on a musical (a musical within a musical - how inspired!). What is the name of the show that is put on by the characters in the movie?

Answer: Pretty Lady

These are all songs on the soundtrack. "42nd Street" was nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award in 1934 but lost out to "Cavalcade". A stage revival of "42nd Street" is currently still running on 42nd Street in New York (as of 2004).
10. Deborah Kerr's singing voice in "The King And I" (1956) was dubbed by who?

Answer: Marni Nixon

Marni Nixon also dubbed the voice of Maria in "West Side Story" for Natalie Wood, and Eliza in "My Fair Lady" for Audrey Hepburn. Her only onscreen film role was in "The Sound Of Music" where she plays a nun.
