Movie Title Conjunctions: The Prequel Quiz

Hollywood may have run out of numbers for sequels. Like them, I will run a prequel to my last quiz. In this fun distraction, decide the correct word that satisfies both titles. In the prequel there is the chance of compound words in a title.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jumpin' Jack _____ dance

Answer: flash

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Flashdance"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash", Penny Marshall's first film as the director, is a comedy which includes as a ploy some of the first internet crimes being integral to the plot.
"Flashdance" is a exalting music-laden story of a young woman striving to achieve her goal of being a professional dancer. She does not use the internet, a shame.
2. Elvira, Mistress of ______ Crystal

Answer: the dark

"Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" and "The Dark Crystal"
"Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" is a comedy featuring "Horror Movie Show" hostess Elvira, portrayed by Cassandra Peterson. Here she breaks loose a small New England town from the chains which stifled any real fun from being had in amusing ways.
"The Dark Crystal" is a puppet character fantasy tale of saving and bringing about a world's rebirth. Full of Gelfings and Skeksis, perfectly animated by Jim Henson and Frank Oz and their usual capable crews.
Breaking free would be a common theme.
3. Sling _____ Runner

Answer: blade

"Sling Blade" and "Blade Runner"
"Sling Blade" is a tale of a socially challenged character trying to do what he can to give meaning to his life in the American Hillbilly environment. He does this by sacrificing his independence so others can live without fear.
"Blade Runner" is a tale of a socially challenged character trying to do what he can to bring meaning into his life in a dystopian future society. He does this by breaking some rules and stealing off with a non-human love interest.
So, it could be said that one film was about a man giving love and the other film was about a man taking love.
4. Office _____ balls

Answer: space

"Office Space" and "Spaceballs"
Both were successful comedies. "Office Space" comically exploited revenge extracted on the business system by some young cubicle workers.
"Spaceballs" was a Mel Brooks exploitation comedy of the science fiction/space opera dramas.
Both films extensively made fun of the equipment particular to each setting.
5. Cape _____ and Loathing in Las Vegas

Answer: fear

"Cape Fear" (1991) and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
"Cape Fear" is a thriller based on a released convict out to extract revenge on his Defense Attorney for having lost the trial that convicted him. Martin Scorsese expertly used the tools of his cinematic trade to tell the tale with great suspense.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" can only be described as a failed thriller that missed on the suspense in relating the twisted tale that was the thing of epics as told, but in reality was probably a quite forgetable series of events. But when you combine Hunter S. Thompson, Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp you get miracles and a delightful warning to others of how drugs can ruin a good weekend.
In one, innocent people are taken hostage; and, in the other, hotel rooms are taken hostage and savagely abused.
6. The Princess _____ of Frankenstein

Answer: bride

"The Princess Bride" and "Bride of Frankenstein"
Had to include two classics in the quiz to justify the high rating I'm sure it will generate. "The Princess Bride" is a comically told Fairy Tale of lost and recovered love, revenge, magic and good use of the word 'inconceivable' (If you're talking about something, isn't it 'conceived'?).
"Bride of Frankenstein" is a horrific Fairy Tale of the effort to construct a mate for the monster and thus soothe the savage beast within. Starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, it is a must see along with its prequel, "Frankenstein". Often seen titled as 'The Bride of Frankenstein", the real title is simply "Bride ...".
7. My Fair _____ hawke

Answer: lady

"My Fair Lady" and "Ladyhawke"
I tried to find a connection between these two but I couldn't and my head started hurting so here's a bit about how they're unrelated.
A Broadway musical, Victorian England and a well read play describe "My Fair Lady", while magic, action and medieval knights define "Ladyhawke".
I guess they come together in both having happy endings where the girl gets her man.
8. Midnight _____ Bebop: The Movie

Answer: cowboy

"Midnight Cowboy" and "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie"
The first is a tale of the struggle to survive in the modern complicated world for sorts who aren't what might be called 'normal'. The second is an expanded tale of the popular anime series about space based bounty hunters. While the first film dives into the squalor that caged men can create around themselves, the second soars through space quite poetically and musically revealing the mastery of man over any environment.
One has a bus ride, while the other has several spaceship rides.
9. Sky Captain and the World of _____ Never Comes

Answer: tomorrow

"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and "Tomorrow Never Comes"
"Sky Captain..." is a sci/fi tale of an alternate universe in which Nazism and some of that science and technology overcame and have carved a world struggling to throw off their shackles. The film is done in unique cinematographic color filtering to lend the work a comic book feel.
"Tomorrow Never Comes" is the crime thriller tale of a man slowly unravelling as the real world leaves him behind and the steps required by police to settle the disruption his unravelling has brought about.
The commonality here would be 'unravelling'. One of a system and the other of a man.
10. Cactus _____ Drum Song

Answer: flower

"Cactus Flower" and "Flower Drum Song"
These two films feature strong female lead characters.
Goldie Hawn won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her part in "Cactus Flower", a comedy-lite effort which details some ins and outs of relationship and commitment building.
"Flower Drum Song" is a musical comedy that explores the difficulties involved in forming and making commitments within a society of clashing old world and modern world conventions.
