Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Fire" (1996) tells about the burning love between two women whose husbands have neglected them. Director was Deepa Mehta. Where was the movie filmed?

Answer: India

Although filmed in India, "Fire" was not recorded in Mumbai - the heart of the Indian movie industry. The interior scenes were filmed in New Delhi, and some outdoor scenes have been recorded in Agra, with the Taj Mahal as background. The movie was spoken in English and Hindi, but apparently did not have a Hindi title.
The protagonists are Radha and Sita, two sisters-in-law. Sita's marriage to Jatin was arranged, but Jatin still is in love with Julie. Meanwhile Radha's husband has become one of the most avid followers of the ascetic preacher Swamiji. When Radha and Sita consoled each other with the state of affairs, true love was kindled. But of course their husbands found out, and Sita eloped. Radha tried to talk things over with Ashok, but during this conversation her gown caught fire and she had to flee with serious burns.
The main actresses were Shabana Azmi as Radha and Nandita Das in the role of Sita.
The Indian Central Board of Certification did allow the movie to be shown all over India (with an "adult" rating), but insisted that the character Sita was renamed Nita. The name Sita reminded them too much of the mythical Sita, the wife of the epic national hero Rama.
The movie sparked several incidents in India with religious conservatives who objected to the theme of lesbian love.
Deepa Mehta was born in Amritsar in 1950. Her movie "Fire" was the first in a trilogy, followed by "Earth" (1998) and "Water" (2005).
2. Which movie told the story of two British runners at the Olympic Games of 1924?

Answer: Chariots of Fire

"Chariots of Fire" (1981) told the true story of Eric Liddell, a Scot born in China, and Harold Abrahams, an Englishman adhering to the Jewish belief. Both competed in the Olympic Games of 1924 in Paris, Liddell in the 400 metres and Abrahams in the sprint events. Ben Cross portrayed Abrahams, and Ian Charleson took the part of Eric Liddell. The movie won four Oscars, among which those for Best Picture and for Best Music.
The title for the movie (and for the soundtrack) was taken from a line of the song "Jerusalem" based upon a poem William Blake wrote as preface to John Milton's "Paradise Lost". And Blake in turn referred to a verse in the Old Testament, just before the prophet Elijah is taken up into heaven.
"The Substance of Fire" (1996) revolved on a publishing firm founded by an aging father of three. When his wife died, the three children conspired to take over the publishing firm.
"Fire, Ice and Dynamite" (1990) starred Roger Moore as Sir George, a wealthy business tycoon. According to his last will and testament, his estate would go to the winners of an athletic competition. Sir George's step-children took up the gauntlet.
"Fire From Below" (2009) was a thriller about the fire spreading after an incident in which a miner uncovered a large mass of pure lithium.
3. Who starred in "In the Line of Fire" (1993) ?

Answer: Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood played the role of Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, who was (according to the movie) on duty when President John F. Kennedy was killed. When Frank Horrigan got information that a trained CIA sniper was out to kill the current President, Frank decided he would not fail a second time...
At the Oscar ceremony, Clint Eastwood was not nominated for his role as Frank Horrigan, but John Malkovich (who played the sniper) was.
Clint Eastwood (born 1930) had his breakthrough in the western series "Rawhide" (1959-1965) and starred in several westerns (including "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", 1966). Clint's best known recurring character is Harry Calahan in the "Dirty Harry" movie series.
Of the other choices, Bruce Willis was in "Fire With Fire" (2012) but is better known for his role as John McClane in the "Die Hard" series. Steven Seagal played Jack Taggert in "Fire Down Below" (1997) but is better known as Casey Ryback in "Under Siege" and "Under Siege 2". Charles Bronson, better known for the role of Paul Kersey in the "Death Wish" movie series, started his career as Cooper in one episode in the TV series "Fireside Theatre" (1949-1955).
4. Jean-Jacques Annaud directed "La Guerre du Feu" (1982), which was brought to the English speaking countries as "Quest for Fire". Which language is spoken in this movie?

Answer: An invented language

The opening credits are in English, printed on the title card. The story was set 80 000 years ago, when mankind just would have discovered the art of making fire. So it makes sense that none of the 21st Century languages are spoken in this movie. Instead, the actors used gestures as well as a set of groans and grunting which was based upon a "language" system invented by Anthony Burgess and named Ulam. The story was of a tribe named the Ulam who had found fire and kept it in a receptacle, until it was extinguished in a fight with a neighbouring tribe. Three of the Ulam were sent out to fetch new fire, and during their adventures they freed a captive woman of another tribe.

This woman named Ika (role by Rae Dawn Chong) showed the men how they could make fire with a drill, and she fell in love with one of the men (Naoh, played by Everett McGill).
5. In which movie did Denzel Washington play an officer trying to assess if the character played by Meg Ryan was worthy a medal of honour?

Answer: Courage under Fire

As stated in the introduction, all movie titles should refer to "Fire". So "Courage under Fire" (1996) is the correct answer.
In "Courage under Fire" Denzel Washington played Colonel Nat Serling, one of the major officers in the Gulf War (1991). Serling felt guilty about some poor decisions he made in active duty, and so was transferred away from the front operations. He then got the order to investigate the case of Captain Karen Walden (played by Meg Ryan), a helicopter pilot whose chopper was shot down and who died in the ensuing fights. Some people had proposed her for a Medal of Honor, but was she really worth this highest recognition?
"Glory" (1989) starred Denzel Washington as Private Trip in a biography about the first all-black company in the US army during the US Civil War. Only two women were credited for this movie: Joan Riordan and Saundra Dunson-Franks played anonymous minor roles.
Meg Ryan had a minor part in "Top Gun" (1986), a movie about a training school for the air force. And neither Denzel Washington nor Meg Ryan were in "A Few Good Men" (1992), a military judicial drama.
6. Which "action-crime-comedy" vehicle with (among others) Cilian Murphy and Brie Larson got very mixed reviews on IMDB? The movie was set in a deserted warehouse and involved an arms deal that went wrong.

Answer: Free Fire

"Free Fire" (2016) starred Cilian Murphy as a potential arms buyer, Arnie Hammer as a would-be arms seller, and Brie Larsen as the broker who put them in contact. The groups met in a deserted warehouse, and just as the deal was to be concluded something went awkward. What followed was one hour and a half of people trying to shoot each other without ever hitting something.
Reviews on IMDb are very diverse: some do like the absence of a plot, while the others find this the greatest flaw in the movie. But apparently all comments agree there was no plot to start with.
"Man on Fire" (2004, with Denzel Washington) was about John Creasy, a CIA agent out for revenge on those who kidnapped the daughter of a family which John had to protect.
In "Playing with Fire" (2019), a group of firefighters rescued three kids and had to take care of them at the firefighters' base until their parents would show up - but the kids made life very difficult for the adults, even if these had faced bigger "fires". Stars in the cast included John Cena and John Leguizamo.
"Fire in the Sky" (1993) told about some lumberjacks witnessing what they called a flying saucer. One of the woodcutters (Travis Walton, played by D. B. Sweeney) went missing for almost a week and could not recall what happened.
7. Which of the following animated movies revolved around world conquest and black magic?

Answer: Fire and Ice

"Fire and Ice" (1983) showed how the evil Queen Juliana and her son Nekron set out to conquer the world shortly after the last ice age. Only a young warrior form the kingdom of Firekeep and the scantily clad princess of this realm offered resistance to Queen Juliana's dark magic.
"Naruto Shippuuden the Movie: The Will of Fire" (2009) was one of the many instalments in the "Naruto Shippuuden" movie series, based upon the manga "Naruto". In the mythical ninja world consisting of five nations, four legendary ninja guards mysteriously disappeared. Suspicion fell on the Land of Fire, where no incidents were recorded.
"Dino King 3D: Journey to Fire Mountain" (2019) starred a dinosaur father searching all the world for his kidnapped son.
In "Planes: Fire and Rescue" (2014), a personified plane named Dusty Crophopper went back to training to join the firefighting squad.
8. Which of these movies starred Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung?

Answer: "Gam Yuk Fun Wang" (1987, "Prison on Fire")

The title of the movie was "Prison on Fire" and it showed how two prisoners grew accustomed to survival in a quite violent prison environment. Chow Yun Fat played prisoner Chung Tin Chin, known to the guards as 41671. Tony Leung played prisoner Lo Kai Yiu, known as 51910. Director Ringo Lam also directed "City on Fire" (1987) and "School on Fire" (1988), with a similar content: people adjusting to a very violent environment.
"Father of Four" was a Danish family movie. The title summarizes quite well what you could expect. The main characters were played by Ole Neumann and Brigitte Price.
"Fire under the Skin" was a French movie about an American student seducing a whole family: mother and all sisters. The lead role was for Kevin Bernhardt.
"The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire" was a typical Italian horror/mystery B- movie. The story started with a brutal murder on the mistress of the Swiss ambassador to Ireland. Stars were Luigi Pistilli as the investigating detective and Dagmar Lassander as the ambassador's daughter.
9. In which movie did firefighters take on a bunch of escaped dragons? Stars included Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey and Izabella Scorupco.

Answer: Reign of Fire

"Reign of Fire" (2002) started with a young boy named Quinn witnessing the awakening of a dragon during construction works. Twenty years later the adult Quinn (Bale) was a firefighter who did not find a way to defeat the dragons. But just as the annihilation of the human race was near, two dragon slayers (McConaughey and Scorupco) came to the rescue.
"Fire Maidens From Outer Space"' (1956) was a British sci-fi movie about some astronauts visiting one of Jupiter's moon and meeting the survivors of Atlantis: a group of scantily clad young women. Leading roles were for Anthony Dexter and Susan Shaw.
"Streets of Fire" (1984) starred Michael Paré as the mercenary Tom Cody and Diane Lane as the singer Ellen Aim. When a motorcycle gang kidnapped Ellen, Tom was hired to retrieve her and meanwhile settle accounts with the kidnappers.
"Fired Up!" (2009) was a teen comedy in which two would-be football players (played by Eric Olsen and Nicholas d'Agosto) entered a cheerleader camp, with the base idea of amassing one-night stands.
10. What was the subtitle of the second movie in the "Hunger Games" series?

Answer: Catching Fire

"The Hunger Games" movies were based upon Suzanne Collins' trilogy. The plot revolved upon a continent named Panem (resembling North America) divided in twelve districts. One of the forms of entertainment was the broadcast of a survival game in which 24 teens (a boy and a girl per district) had to fight each other until death. In the first instalment, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) and her district fellow Peeta Mellark (role by Josh Hutcherson) won the games. The second episode started with the announcement of a new Games, in which only the former winners per district were allowed to compete. But in District 12, Katniss' and Peeta's district, there were only three winners still alive and of the correct age...
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (book 2009, movie 2013) referred in the title to the parade of competitors, in which Katniss was shown in a costume that looked as if she was on fire.
The third book in the trilogy inspired two movies: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" (2014) and (predictably) "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" (2015). So the trilogy was made into four movies.
