Beechum County, Alabama is referred to many times in the movie. A signboard for Beechum County, Alabama appears at the beginning of the movie, when Bill and Stan are shown travelling in the countryside of Alabama. The murder of the store clerk and the arrest of Bill and Stan takes place in Beechum County. The trial of the case takes place in the Beechum County Court.
2. Why do Bill and Stan think they have been arrested?

Answer: For shoplifting

Bill and Stan think the police have arrested them for shoplifting the can of tuna, which Bill forgot to pay for when he was at the convenience store. In fact, Stan realises that a police vehicle is following them after leaving the convenience store and is concerned, but Bill doesn't seem to be too worried, although he knows that the police are trying to catch them.

He thinks that the police arrested him and Stan for shoplifting.
3. When does Bill realise that he and Stan have been arrested for the murder of the store clerk?

Answer: The sheriff accuses Bill of shooting the clerk

Bill and Stan are under the impression that thay have been arrested for shoplifting the can of tuna when they are brought to the sheriff's office. First, both Bill and Stan are interrogated, and later on, Stan is told by the police to sit outside on a bench, after being interrogated separately, and he does that.

The sheriff then interrogates Bill alone, and it is during this time that the sheriff tells him, "You shot the clerk." Bill is confused, but suddenly he realises that he and Stan have been arrested for the murder of the store clerk, and when he is told to sit outside and wait, he tells Stan why they have actually been arrested.
4. Why does Bill feel happy and relieved after calling his mother from the sheriff's office?

Answer: She tells him that there is an attorney in his family

After Bill and Stan are interrogated by the police, they discuss the idea of hiring an attorney to represent them. Bill and Stan are told that they can make a phone call, so Bill decides to call his mother. He tells her that he and Stan are innocent, and that they need a good attorney to represent them in the case, and she tells Bill that there is no need to worry, because his cousin Vinny is an attorney, and he can help them by representing them in the case. Bill feels very happy and excited when he hears this, and thinks that it would be very good if Vinny fights the case.
5. Who accompanies Vinny to Alabama?

Answer: His fiancee, Mona Lisa Vito

Vinny travels to Alabama with his fiancee Mona Lisa Vito to help Bill and Stan by representing them in the case. Lisa is a hairdresser by profession, although she is shown to be unemployed. She supports Vinny throughout the case to the extent that she can, but she is also quite frank and straight forward in dealing with Vinny and doesn't hesitate to point out Vinny's mistakes.

The character of Mona Lisa Vito was portrayed by Marisa Tomei in the film.
6. Why does Vinny deceive the judge, Chamberlain Haller, when the latter interviews him?

Answer: Although Vinnie is an attorney, he is not licensed in the state and has no trial experience

Shortly after he takes the case, Vinny attends an interview with the judge, Chamberlain Haller, who is presiding over the case. The judge tells Vinny the reason why he is being interviewed, and then he asks Vinny some questions to grant him permission to appear in the court.

However, Vinny doesn't have any answer for some of the questions, so he lies to the judge. For example, the judge asks Vinny how long he has been practising as an attorney, and Vinny tells the judge that he has been practicing for a long time and is an experienced attorney.

The judge asks him what the verdicts of the cases he has appeared in have been, and Vinny replies that he has won some of the cases and lost some of them. However, Chamberlain Haller is satisfied with his answers, and allows him to appear in the court for the case, but tells Vinny clearly that he expects him to come fully prepared for the case in all respects.
7. Which of the following actors played the role of Chamberlain Haller, the judge?

Answer: Fred Gwynne

Fred Gwynne played the role of Chamberlain Haller, a judge, who tries the case. "My Cousin Vinny" was Fred Gwynne's last film as an actor.

Fred Gwynne was an American actor who began his acting career in the 1950s in theatre, and then entered films with a minor role in the movie "On The Waterfront", which was released in 1954. He also worked in TV shows, such as "The Phil Silvers Show", and "Car 54, Where Are You". Some of his other films as an actor are "Munster, Go Home" (1966), "Dames At Sea" (1971), both TV movies, "The Christmas Star" (1986), "Disorganized Crime" (1989), and many other films.
8. In what way is Mona Lisa Vito's testimony useful and necessary?

Answer: She provides useful evidence as an expert witness

Throughout the film, Lisa plays a significant role in the case Vinny is dealing with by helping him. She also keeps Vinny informed about facts that he isn't aware of. Although she doesn't play a very active role in the trial initially, her testimony proves to be instrumental towards the end of the film in proving Bill and Stan innocent.

She is herself a mechanic, and belongs to a family of mechanics, so she is able to effectively testify in the court as an expert witness. A photograph that she has in her possession proves that Bill's car couldn't have been used by the culprits to escape, since the car Bill was driving doesn't have the features that would have made the tire marks possible, such as an independent rear suspension, posi-traction and flat tire marks. Vinny questions George Wilbur, who endorses what Lisa tells the court, and the sheriff also testifies that the real culprits were arrested and found driving a green coloured Pontiac Tempest and were found to have a gun which was of the same type that had been used to shoot the store clerk.
9. What is the outcome of the case?

Answer: Vinny wins the case, and Bill and Stan are freed

The outcome of the case is positive. Vinny comes to the court and he argues his case very well, and succeeds in proving that Bill and Stan are innocent. As a result, Jim Trotter drops the charges against them, and they are set free by the court. Everyone leaves the court, and Vinny is praised by everyone for his effort and hard work. Even the judge, Chamberlain Haller, who had been critical of Vinny in the beginning, appreciates his effort and congratulates and compliments Vinny.
10. How does the movie end?

Answer: Vinny leaves the court with Lisa, and they talk about their marriage plans

The movie "My Cousin Vinny" ends with Vinny and Lisa arguing with each other about how they should get married, and Lisa tells Vinny that she wants to get married to him in a church. Thus, the movie has a happy ending.
