Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the title screen appears at the beginning of the film, the main title is "Nosferatu". What is the subtitle?

Answer: A Symphony Of Horror

As the film is silent, all of the information has to be conveyed through the acting, and through subtitle screens such as this one.
2. In many of the subtitle and information screens, Count Orlok is referred to as what?

Answer: The Death Bird

There seems to be a lot of repetition of certain phrases in the written screens, for example, the word "creepy" is used an awful lot. I think this may be as a result of the translation from German to English.
3. What is Ellen's reaction when Hutter gives her the flowers?

Answer: She is upset that he has killed the flowers

Ellen is a strange character - she is this film's version of Mina Harker from "Dracula", and frankly I think she is less appealing than Mina. She is sad that her husband has killed the flowers by picking them, not that he is leaving, because she does not know this yet.
4. How does Knock refer to Transylvania?

Answer: Country of Ghosts

Hutter later refers to it as the "country of thieves and ghosts" when he is telling Ellen that he has to leave.
5. In the Carpathians, Hutter is warned of the werewolf. What do we actually see in the forest?

Answer: Hyena

It is stripey, and looks nothing like a wolf. This seems a bit cheesy now, but I suppose when the film was made, people were not as familiar with hyenas as we are now.
6. The book which Hutter reads on numerous occasions is about four things. One of the subjects is vampires, which of the following is NOT one of the other things?

Answer: Werewolves

The title of the book is "Of Vampires, Terrible Ghosts, Magic, And The 7 Deadly Sins". Hutter works out what Orlok is from reading this book, and Ellen later discovers how to defeat Orlok from information in the book.
7. In the scene where Orlok's carriage takes Hutter to the castle, two unusual filming techniques are used in two different shots. What are they?

Answer: Speeding up the film and shooting in negative

The carriage is sped up to make it look unnaturally fast, and another shot is in negative, so it's black where it should be white, and white where it should be black. I think it is supposed to be symolic of how odd the journey is, and how everything is not quite what it seems.
8. Hutter gets hurt in the castle, and Count Orlok sees his blood. How does he get hurt?

Answer: Cuts his finger while slicing bread

He notices Count Orlok staring at him, and loses concentration and cuts himself. The shaving scene mentioned above is in the 1992 film "Bram Stoker's Dracula". Another interesting thing to notice in the scenes in this room is, when Hutter is showing Orlok the deeds to his house, on the table there is a picture of the house which looks as though it has been drawn by a five-year-old!
9. In the book that Hutter reads about vampires, what is said to cause nightmares?

Answer: The vampire's shadow

Orlok's shadow is used numerous times in the film to represent his presence, most famously when we see his shadow climbing the stairs to Ellen's room.
10. What is unusual about the way in which Ellen moves around the room when Hutter is being attacked by Orlok?

Answer: She walks on tiptoe

She walks on her toes, with her arms out in front of her like a sleepwalker. She gets out of bed, and walks out of the window and along the balcony until Harding rescues her and calls the doctor.
11. When Ellen sits on the beach waiting for Hutter's return, what do we see among the dunes?

Answer: Graves

I think they represent the men who had died at sea. It also echoes what is happening on the ship carrying Orlok at the time.
12. Which game are Harding and Ruth playing in the garden?

Answer: Croquet

Their game is disturbed when a letter arrives from Hutter, and they rush to the beach to give it to Ellen.
13. Knock steals a piece of paper from the warden's pocket, and reads it. What does he read about?

Answer: The plague threat

Knock is later the town's scapegoat for the plague, and they all chase him through the streets!
14. In what order do Hutter and Orlok arrive in Wisburg?

Answer: They arrive at the same time

Orlok travelled by ship, and Hutter travelled by land, and they both appear to arrive at the same time.
15. Ellen leaves a message in her embroidery before she gives herself to Orlok. What does it say?

Answer: I Love You

She stitches "Ich Liebe Dich" in large letters, which are clearly visible in one shot. She leaves it for Hutter as a final message because she knows she will probably die later that night.
