"LOTR: FOTR", the epic Tolkein tale of questing hobbits, had 13 nominations but lost to the mental health biopic "A Beautiful Mind" in 2002. Steven Spielberg's WW2 drama "Saving Private Ryan" (11 nominations) lost to the period comedy "Shakespeare in Love" in 1999. So did the Howard Hughes bio "The Aviator", which lost to the boxing flick "Million Dollar Baby" in 2005. Warren Beatty's gangster tale "Bugsy" had 10 in 1992, but lost to the cannibal thriller "The Silence of the Lambs".
