Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Emmy Award winning actor portrayed the caring yet over indulgent dad?

Answer: Steve Martin

Steve Martin starred as Gil Buckman in this wonderful film. He thought if he spent more time with his son he wouldn't need therapy. Steve started his career as a writer. In 1969, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. The series was "The Smothers Brother's Comedy Hour".
2. Helen Buckman was a pivotal member of this dysfunctional clan. Who portrayed her?

Answer: Diane Wiest

Diane played the divorced mother to Julie (Martha Plimpton) and Gary (Joaquin Phoenix). She was angry because she stayed behind to take care of her children while their father wouldn't even clean their teeth anymore (he was a dentist). Diane was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress for this role. She didn't win; however, she did win the category in 1995 for "Bullets Over Broadway".
3. When the family went to the pizza parlor Kevin lost something. What did he go into hysterics over losing?

Answer: retainer

Gil and Karen went as far as to go outside and check the trash in the back. Gil was of course portrayed by Steve Martin and Karen by Mary Steenburgen. Besides being the wife of Ted Danson, Mary is an Oscar winning actress. In the family, she played the mom to three very charming children.
4. Of all of Frank's children, who was the oldest?

Answer: Helen

Jason Robards starred as the patriarch of the Buckman clan. He had four grown children Gil, Larry, Susan, and Helen. He was constantly bailing his son Larry out of financial trouble. Jason starred in several box office hits, such as "Philadelphia" and "Magnolia". He passed away in 2000--a truly wonderful actor.
5. Larry Buckman was a loser. What was the latest get rich quick scheme he was in involved?

Answer: Hydroponics

Tom played Larry, the guy who couldn't get a break. When asked what hydroponics was, he was dumbfounded. He looked at Nathan and replied, "I am the deal maker. Let the guys in suits worry about that". He came home to his family with a mixed son named Cool.

This was the first time anyone in the family found out about Cool. Tom was nominated in 1984 for a Best Actor award for "Amadeus". Like his character in the movie, he came up short.
6. When Larry came back to town, who suggested Grandma should stay with them?

Answer: Nathan

Nathan thought having an older influence in the house with their daughter would benefit her greatly. Rick Moranis portrayed this role in one of his best performances ever. He won an American Comedy Award for this film. He played a control freak who wanted to teach his daughter everything.

His wife and he became estranged due to his fixation. In one of my favorite scenes, he interrupted her teaching. He started singing their wedding song to her. His antics won her back and, shortly afterwards, they were having another baby.
7. Julie was attending school in the movie even though she and Todd had a baby.

Answer: False

Julie and Todd did in fact get married, but she got pregnant while she was in school. Martha played the love struck fool in this movie. She was dating a man her mom hated. She even went as far as marrying him. Martha is probably best known for her role as Stef in "The Goonies".
8. What former soap opera actress played Susan Buckman?

Answer: Harley Jane Kozak

What a name for a woman! She is a truly talented actress. She played Susan, a woman struggling to get attention from her husband. She told Karem she was really attracted to him in college because he got her together. Harley won a Soap Opera Digest Award in 1984.
9. What did Larry say to Grandma when he first saw her?

Answer: "Grandma, you're getting shorter."

When Larry first saw Grandma he said, "Grandma you're getting shorter". She replied, "I'm shrinking". This was one of the funniest lines in the movie. Grandma was portrayed by the wonderful, Helen Shaw.
10. Which of Gil and Karen's children liked to butt things with his/her head?

Answer: Justin

When the family came over for Kevin's birthday, Karen told Susan he liked to butt things with his head. He also liked to sleep in nothing but a cowboy hat and gun belt.

This was a wonderful movie with a stellar cast.
