Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christian Slater plays the role of night-time pirate DJ, "Hard Harry". What is Harry's real name by day?

Answer: Mark Hunter

Mark Hunter is a shy, awkward student who spends his time avoiding social situations, a complete contrast to his DJ persona.
2. Mark's fellow student, Nora Diniro, works out that he is "Happy Harry" but agrees to keep his secret. Who plays Nora Diniro?

Answer: Samantha Mathis

Nora gradually manages to break through Mark's shyness and become an ally. When Mark decides to quit, Nora encourages him to continue as his message is too important.

Samantha Mathis briefly dated Christian Slater around the time of filming 'Pump Up The Volume'. She went on to date the late River Phoenix and was with him the night he died. 'Pump Up The Volume' was her first movie before working in many others, including 'Little Women' (1994), 'Jack and Sarah' (1995) and 'Broken Arrow' (1996). She has also worked in television, playing small roles in 'House' (2006), 'Lost' (2007) and 'Greys Anatomy' (2009).
3. What song does Mark/Harry use as the theme song to his show?

Answer: 'Everybody Knows' by Leonard Cohen

"Everybody Knows" is the theme tune heard at the top of Harry's show every night. It was released in 1988 on Leonard Cohen's album, 'I'm Your Man'. The soundtrack to 'Pump Up The Volume' features a cover of the song performed by Concrete Blonde.

'Scenario' by Beastie Boys also briefly features in the movie, but does not feature on the soundtrack. It was never released on any Beastie Boys album, being cut from 'Licensed to Ill' (1986) for being too offensive.

'Heretic' never featured on any of Soundgarden's albums, but was released on their 'Loudest Love' EP (1990). The original version appeared on the 1986 compilation album 'Deep Six', which featured songs from various Seattle bands.

'Kick Out The Jams' is a song by MC5 from their 1969 album of the same name. A cover of the song by Bad Brains with Henry Rollins features on the 'Pump Up The Volume' soundtrack.
4. How does Harry/Mark say he came to own the short-wave radio set that he broadcasts on?

Answer: His dad got it for him to keep in touch with his old friends.

After the family moved to Arizona, Mark's dad gave him the radio set to keep in touch with his friends "back East" but he could never reach anybody. He thought nobody was listening to his broadcasts.
5. As Harry's popularity grows among the students, graffiti starts to appear on the walls of Hubert H, Humphrey High with Harry's slogans. What is Harry's most adopted slogan?

Answer: So Be It

"So Be It" is heard many times throughout the movie, and becomes a metaphor for being free to speaking your mind and then deal with the consequences, rather than conforming to the (corrupt) school system.
6. After the suicide of one of Mark's fellow high school students, the Guidance Counsellor sets up a suicide hotline. What is it called?

Answer: BIONIC

BIONIC stands for 'Believe It Or Not I Care'. The useless hotline is only open from 8.30am - 3.30pm.

"Teenage Suicide (Don't Do It)" is a song by fictional band 'Big Fun' from the 1988 film "Heathers", also starring Christian Slater.
7. Mark's dad is the Commissioner for the school, giving Mark inside information on what's going on. Principal Cresswood is ensuring her school maintains its good reputation by corrupt means. How is she doing this?

Answer: She is systematically weeding out the 'problem' students.

After receiving a sum of money per enrolled student from the government at the start of the school year, Principal Cresswood kicks out all the "undesirable" students who cause trouble, but keeps their names on the role. She does this with the help of information received via the students' supposedly confidential talks with Mr Deaver, the Guidance Counsellor.
8. Harry causes disorder amongst the kids of Paradise Hills and the police and press try and track him down. In what name is Harry's PO Box registered at the post office?

Answer: Charles U. Farley

The man at the post office will only give out this information to the police. 'Charles U Farley' is registered as living at "1122 Crescent", which is the address of the school. Another one in the eye for the authorities.
9. As the FCC close in on Harry and try and shut him down, how does he continue to broadcast?

Answer: He sets up his equipment in a jeep and drives around.

Harry moves all his radio equipment into a jeep and Nora drives him around the local area, in a last ditch attempt to keep broadcasting. He panics when his harmoniser breaks which he needed to disguise his voice. He makes the decision to go on air without it and reveal his true voice to the world.
10. What is the last thing Harry says to his listeners before the FCC take him off the air?

Answer: "Keep the air alive!"

Driving around in his jeep with Nora, being chased by police cars and helicopters, Harry urges his listeners to start up their own radio shows and continue his work after he is gone, which is just what they do.
