Watto was a junk dealer who had the spaceship parts the heroes needed. George Lucas needed a way for Force suggestions to not work on Watto, so he just made the entire Toydarian species immune. Some fans thought this was a brilliant idea, while others felt it was lazy world building.

When George Lucas set out to make a movie with the latest CG capabilities, his first instinct was to do a race. The script developed to explicitly include a race to show off the latest technology.

Boss Nass was another Gungan like Jar Jar Binks. While not as goofy as Jar Jar, he still had his strange moments (like violently shaking his head with spit flying everywhere), and some viewers still found the speech patterns offensive.
