While on their way to school, Nemo suggests that while he's at school he'll see a shark. While Marlin doubts that his son will, Nemo asks how old sea turtles are, saying that Sandy Plankton from next door says that sea turtles live to be about a hundred years old.

He wants to answer his son's questions, but he doesn't know the answers because he never met either a shark or a turtle, so tells him that if he will ask if he meets either.

When the divers take Nemo from his father, Marlin swims to try to stop the boat, but eventually loses sight of it. He swims down to the sea bottom and runs into Dory. While she tries to tell him that it'll be alright, Marlin is convinced that nothing will be as it should be unless he could find the boat.

When Dory hears this, she tells him that she saw the boat he was looking for and tells him to follow her, only to lose her memory along the way.

After Dory tells Marlin that she suffers from short-term memory loss, he starts to leave, but they run into Bruce the shark. He pretends to attack them, making Marlin very nervous, and asks them why they're out so late. When Marlin answers that they aren't doing anything, Bruce invites them to "a little get-together", and Dory wants to know if he means a party. Bruce agrees that it is like a party, and then takes them to meet his friends, Anchor and Chum.

The three sharks have chosen to stop eating fish and instead to be friends with them. When Dory and Marlin join the sharks for the get-together, it is "step five: bring a fish friend". Later, when Marlin finds the diver's mask and accidentally smacks Dory with it, Bruce smells blood and tries to attack them.

This is the first time Nemo meets the pelican called Nigel. Nigel seems to be almost friends with the fish in the tank, speaking to them and asking after what the dentist is doing. He meets Nemo and immediately assumes he was from the area around Sydney, where Nigel feeds.

When the dentist sees Nigel, he throws Nigel out and this is when Nemo finds out he is to be a gift to the dentist's niece. Later, Nigel speaks to Nemo to tell him that he heard Nemo's dad was searching the whole ocean for him.

When Nemo comes to the tank with the other fish, Gill, who I think is like the leader, decides to admit Nemo into their club. During the middle of the night, Jacques, the shrimp, fetches Nemo to bring him to the others where he has to swim through "the Ring of Fire" before he would be admitted into their club. Finally, Gill gives them a plan to escape the tank that ends up putting Nemo in great danger.

After Marlin and Dory ask help to find Sydney, they come to a trench where Dory remembers she was told to go through it instead of over it. Marlin doesn't believe her and they swim over it instead, where they are soon surrounded by rather large jelly fish. Before this, however, Dory finds a little jelly fish and is stung by it by the time Marlin hits it away.

When Nemo learns that his father has been searching the whole ocean for him, Nemo goes into the filter with a rock to jam it. Later, when the tank is filthy, Gill tells Nemo this when they learn the dentist plans on cleaning the tank. They wake the next morning to the shocking realization that the tank is already clean.

When Nigel takes Marlin and Dory to find out that Nemo is pretending to be dead, Marlin forces Nigel into the room to try and save Nemo. Gill is blown out of Mount Wannahockaloogie to land in the dentist's niece's hair, and she throws Nemo in his bag where it lands in the tool tray. Gill then manages to launch Nemo into the sink.

The first fish Nemo finds and speaks to is Dory, who is very lost because Marlin chose to leave. Dory, having short-term memory loss, forgets whose dad they were looking for.
