Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As "Raiders of the Lost Ark" opens, Indiana Jones is searching for an idol. When he locates it, he is hesitant to approach it. Indy's assistant says "Let us hurry. There is nothing to fear here." What is Indiana's timorous reply?

Answer: "That's what scares me."

The movie opens as Indiana tries to recover a Hovito idol with two assistants (though only one enters the temple with him). Indy locates the right place, but must navigate through skeletons and deadly traps all along the way. When Indiana and his assistant reach the room with the idol in it, the room is empty and innocuous-looking.

However, Indiana ignores the impatience of his assistant, and avoids a gruesome death by booby trap. Despite Indiana's clever switch of the idol with a sandbag, the temple begins to crash down around their ears. Even worse, Indiana's enemy Belloq is waiting at the temple entrance to relieve Indiana of his prize.
2. When Marion tells Indiana "You're not the man I knew ten years ago," Indy replies, "It's not the years, honey; it's the _________." What distance-describing word completes this quote?

Answer: mileage

Marion and Indiana renew their relationship during their quest for the Ark of the Covenant, but it is clear that much has changed since they first met. It is not simply a question of ten years having elapsed. Marion implies that Indiana broke her heart when he left her, and that she is now a woman who knows who she is and what she is doing. Similarly, Indiana has matured greatly, though his growing up was achieved through adventure and danger rather than betrayal and abandonment.

This quote really sums up the changes that both characters have gone through.
3. Who is the 'idolatrous' speaker of the following quote? "You and I are very much alike. Archeology is our religion, yet we have both fallen from the pure faith. Our methods have not differed as much as you pretend. I am but a shadowy reflection of you. It would take only a nudge to make you like me. To push you out of the light."

Answer: Belloq

Belloq says this to Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". (The 'idolatrous' description is a reference to Belloq's theft of the Hovito idol, not religious practices.) Although Indiana replies with a cool "Now you're getting nasty." it is pretty clear that he is disturbed by this accusation.

While Indiana's methods of retrieving archeological artifacts are morally dubious at times, he definitely abides by a code of honor (albeit his own). This is amply demonstrated in the fact that he is extremely harsh with those who betray their home country for a shot at glory, and his determination that historical artifacts should be in a museum as opposed to sold to the highest bidder (e.g. the Cross of Coronado).
4. As "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" opens, Indiana addresses Lao Che in the local tongue. Surprised, Lao Che exclaims, "You never told me you spoke my language, Doctor Jones." What is Indiana's festive reply?

Answer: "Only on special occasions."

This banter between Indiana and Lao Che, together with Willie's performance, sets the stage for the sour business deal that is about to occur. The exchange reveals that deceit and secrecy are parts of their business relationship. However, while Indiana seems quite prepared for Lao Che to try to cheat him out of his reward and then take the diamond back by force, he clearly does not anticipate a poisoned drink (a mistake he probably never repeats again). Fortunately, Indiana manages to escape with the help of his juvenile sidekick despite the loss of one of his friends.
5. Just as Indiana Jones is about to finish off the antagonist in "Temple of Doom," he speaks the following words: "Mola Ram! Prepare to meet ________ ..." To what Hindu god does Indiana want to send Mola Ram?

Answer: Kali

Indiana mentions Kali as someone Mola Ram will meet in the afterlife because she is the goddess whom Mola Ram and the Thuggee cult worship. Kali is often portrayed as an evil goddess, particularly in film, but she can also be viewed as the protector of mothers.

It is not the worship of Kali that makes Mola Ram's cult evil in the movie but the human sacrifices they make to her. Shiva, the god worshiped by the local townspeople in "Indiana Jones", is actually Kali's consort.
6. Who is the diminutive speaker of the following quote? "I keep telling you, you listen to me more, you live longer!"

Answer: Short Round

Indiana Jones is obviously the hero of this saga, but he is not always the one with the answers. In this case, Indiana sneaks down to the statue of Kali to remove the Sankara stones from them. He encounters no problems along the way, but as he turns to leave, he hears a noise that makes him pause. Short Round tells him to hurry back, but Indiana investigates the sound.

As a result, he finds the children who were kidnapped from the nearby village. However, all three of them (Willy, Short Round, and Indy) are captured shortly after that. Short Rounds makes this comment shortly after their capture, although it probably would have been applicable to other situations as well.
7. When Indiana and his father get into a plane to escape capture and soar away, Professor Henry Jones remarks, "I didn't know you could fly a plane." What is Indiana's bipartite reply?

Answer: "Fly, yes. Land, no."

This is not Indiana's first experience with flying a plane. In the "Temple of Doom" he must fly a plane that the pilots have deserted. In that situation, he does not even attempt to land, but jumps out using an inflatable raft as a parachute. Here, Indiana and his father stay in the plane, and experience a bumpy but safe landing.

After these experiences, I bet Indiana gave some serious thought to getting a pilot's license.
8. In one of the final scenes of "The Last Crusade," Indiana gives the following warning: "Elsa, don't cross the seal. The knight warned us not to take the _________ from here!" What object must be kept inside the Great Seal?

Answer: Grail

Indiana makes good use of the Holy Grail to heal his father's gunshot wound. In the relief over having successfully retrieved the Grail and Henry's recovery, Elsa picks up the Grail and starts to leave with it. Indiana tries to caution her, but she crosses the seal and the temple begins to fall down on them. Elsa plummets to her death when she attempts to reach the Grail instead of pulling herself to safety.

Indiana narrowly escapes the same fate when his father talks him into leaving the Grail.
9. Who is the speaker of the following quote? "I find that if I just sit down... the solution presents itself."

Answer: Henry Jones (Senior)

Indiana goes to the castle where is father is being held. However, they don't make it out of the room before the Nazi find out about their presence. Running away from the Nazis, the Jones men find themselves in a room with no apparent exit. As Indiana is frantically searching the room for a hidden door, Henry sits down on an available chair and rocks back.

As he does so, a staircase reveals itself right under where Indiana is standing. Unfortunately, the two do not make it out of the castle that easily.
10. Indiana has a well-publicized fear of snakes. Is there snake-related dialogue or action in all three movies in the original Indiana Jones trilogy?

Answer: yes

As I'm sure many of you knew, all of the Indiana Jones movies show Indy's fear of snakes in one way or another. In "Raiders of the Lost Ark" Indiana descended into the Wells of Souls, which was filled with snakes (asps, according to Sallah). In "The Last Crusade" we see young Indiana Jones (River Phoenix) fall into a circus car full of snakes, explaining the origin of Indy's fear.

The reference in "Temple of Doom" is a little bit more subtle. After Indiana, Short Round, and Willie get stranded in India, an elephant forms an attachment to Willie. Willie bats away the elephant's trunk all evening, but once a snake falls onto her shoulders. Thinking it's still the elephant, Willie picks up the snake and tosses it away from her.

Indiana, however, can be seen scrambling backwards in fear when he sees the snake. I hope you enjoyed the quiz!
