The introduction starts out with an older Denahi telling others about himself and his two brothers, and how his brother Kenai became a man by becoming a bear.

It was at Kenai's manhood ceremony where he would be given a totem to tell him how he would live his life to become a man, and once he was a man he would place his mark among those of his ancestors. Kenai was given the totem of a bear that represented love, but he wasn't exactly too pleased about it.

Instead, Tuke says that they understand completely what he's saying. He then tells Kenai that they were squirrels, and Rutt, realizing what his brother was doing, says that his brother was the squirrel, but he was more of a wolverine.

Sometimes it seems like Koda will never stop talking, as observed by Kenai while they were riding the mammoths, and Koda was telling him how he can tell when snow is clean.

Along the way to the salmon run, they come to a place where they see drawings on the walls. On one of the drawings that Kenai notices, a human is attacking a bear with a spear.

At the salmon run, the bears play a game where they tell the others what happened to them over the summer if they caught the fish that was thrown. Tug starts the game.

The two moose brothers, Rutt and Tuke, are having an argument about what it means to be a brother. Rutt no longer wants Tuke as a brother, so when they find Koda, he says that Koda is his new brother.

While Kenai and Koda are still riding the mammoths, Kenai tells Koda that if it wasn't for his spirit brother Sitka, he wouldn't be there. Koda looks up at the northern lights and says, "Thanks, Sitka. If it weren't for you, I would never have met Kenai." He then tells Kenai that he always wanted a brother.

Sitka changed Kenai back into a human and Denahi has finally realized that he was chasing his brother this whole time, and he is shocked by what he almost did. When Kenai sees Koda and tells his brothers that "he needs me", Denahi states that Kenai looked better as a bear anyways.
