Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the opening sequence of the film, we listen to the song 'Iko Iko', and watch the Lamborghini cars being unloaded from the ship. It's an amazing shot because it often seems as if the cars are floating in mid-air. How many Lamborghinis are there?

Answer: 4

The four Lamborghinis (2 red, 1 black and 1 white) are the source of most of Charlie Babbitt's (played by Tom Cruise) frustration. His whole business hinges on the sale of those cars, which are not being released because they do not pass emissions tests, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's standards.

The cars are eventually repossessed to cover his loans and the buyers demand their deposits back, leaving Charlie $80,000 in debt.
2. While a teenager, Charlie took the Roadmaster after being refused permission. How long did his father leave him sitting in jail?

Answer: 2 days

In his father's will, Charlie was left the 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible and the title to the rose bushes, to 'remind him of the value of excellence and the possibility of perfection'. Ironically, it was the car that caused the rift between Charlie and his father in the first place.

After bringing home an excellent report card, Charlie asked for, and was denied, permission to take the car for a victory drive. When he took the car anyway, his father reported it stolen, then left Charlie sitting in jail for 2 days, long after all his friends had been bailed out.
3. Trying to track down the recipient of his father's fortune, Charlie follows a paper trail to Wallbrook, where he is surprised to find that he has a brother. When Raymond (played by Dustin Hoffman) sees the car, he remarks that he 'always drives the car on Saturday'. How many miles does he say had been put on the car since he last drove it?

Answer: 28 miles

Raymond's knowledge about the car and the man who once owned it catch Charlie's attention, and lead to the revelation that Raymond is his brother. With his amazing memory for numbers, Raymond knows exactly how many miles have been added to the odometer since he last drove the car, and comments that there should be more.
4. What question does Raymond ask to show people that he likes them?

Answer: 'Are you taking any prescription medication?'

When Charlie and his girlfriend, Susanna (played by Valerie Golino), are in Raymond's room, they are upsetting him by touching his things. At one point he asks Susanna if she is taking any prescription medication, which strikes Charlie as being a bizarre question.

The attendant, Vern (played by Michael Roberts), explains that this is Raymond's way of showing that he likes Susanna. Vern also explains that people are not Raymond's first priority.
5. What is Raymond's stock answer when he's feeling confused or upset, and is asked a question he doesn't want to answer?

Answer: 'I don't know.'

When Charlie is in Raymond's room, he asks Raymond if he has read all the books on the shelves. Raymond answers 'I don't know.' Charlie then goes on to ask if he's read each individual book, to which Raymond answers that he did. Charlie repeats the question about reading all the books, and Raymond again replies 'I don't know', which frustrates Charlie a great deal. Vern explains that Raymond is upset because his things are being touched, and this is what he says when he's upset.

There are many other incidents in the film when Raymond answers 'I don't know' to a question he should know the answer to.

When Raymond is very stressed, he starts repeating Abbott and Costellos' comedy routine, 'Who's On First'.
6. What does Raymond always have for breakfast on Tuesdays?

Answer: Pancakes and Maple Syrup

While eating breakfast with Charlie in a restaurant, Raymond starts to get upset because the maple syrup and toothpicks aren't already on the table. When Charlie points out that the pancakes haven't arrived yet, Raymond says that if the maple syrup comes after the pancakes, it will definitely be too late. Raymond becomes quite agitated by this, and Charlie grabs him by the neck and tells him to calm down. Raymond really flips out and starts talking about a 'serious injury'.

This is the scene where the toothpicks spill and Raymond shows his amazing ability to count them.
7. According to Raymond, what airline has never had a plane crash?

Answer: Qantas

When Raymond realizes that Charlie is going to take him onto a plane, he becomes very distressed and starts hitting himself. When Charlie tries to calm him by suggesting they take a different airline, Raymond starts quoting statistics for crashes that each suggested carrier has had. Eventually it evolves that Qantas is the only airline that has never experienced a crash, but since it doesn't offer a flight from Cincinnati to L.A, this isn't very useful information.

They have to drive across country.
8. How many fish sticks are supposed to be on Raymond's plate?

Answer: 8

Trapped in the Honeymoon Haven Hotel because Raymond won't drive in the rain, Charlie tries to keep his business together through phonecalls. Raymond is presented his required dinner of fish sticks, green lime jelly and orange soda. He is not happy though, because there are only four fish sticks on his plate when there should be eight.

A frustrated Charlie solves this problem by cutting the four in half, making eight.
9. When Charlie finally makes the Rain Man connection, he asks Raymond what song he used to sing to him when he was only two. What song does Raymond start singing?

Answer: I Saw Her Standing There

When Charlie starts to run a bath for Raymond he becomes very agitated by the hot water. He starts yelling 'hot water, scary bad' and 'hot water burn baby'. Charlie finally realizes that Raymond was institutionalized because of Charlie's being hurt, and that he was the Rain Man who used to sing to him when he was upset. 'I Saw Her Standing There', written by Lennon and McCartney, was the song that Raymond began singing.
10. How does Raymond describe his 'date', who he meets in the casino's bar?

Answer: 'very sparkly'

Wile Raymond is sitting in the bar waiting for Charlie, he is approached by a woman who we are led to believe is a call girl. She offers to meet him later for a 'date', but changes her mind when he asks her if she is taking any prescription medication. Raymond presses on though, wanting to learn how to dance, and returning to the bar at the appointed time. When asked to describe her, he says, 'She's very sparkly. She looks like a holiday.'
Feeling sorry for Raymond because he is stood up, Susanna kisses him in the elevator, an experience that he describes as being 'very wet.'
