John Wayne plays the main character, who is usually called Chance. He is the sheriff of a small town in Texas.

The Mexicans gave Dude the name "Borachon", which, in English, means "drunk". Dude was a great deputy until a girl came on the stage and Dude left with her. When he came back, she was gone, and Dude was a drunk. Dude quits drinking by the end of the movie.

Carlos and his wife Consuela run the hotel. They are both very good friends of Chance. Carlos was played by Pedro Gonzales-Gonzales, and Consuela was played by Estalita Rodriguez.

Answer: Her ex-husband cheated at gambling

Feathers, played by Angie Dickinson, didn't know her husband was cheating. Since then she traveled on the stage from town to town. She stays in Chance's town, however.

Answer: Colorado

Colorado, played by Ricky Nelson, thought that the "man in the checkered vest" was cheating. Chance automatically assumed it was Feathers because of the handbill, but Colorado proves him wrong.

Joe Burdette got into a fight with Dude. Another man tried to stop Joe from beating Dude up badly and Joe shot the man. Chance put him in jail and is waiting for the US Marshall to come get him.

Pat Wheeler is a friend of Chance's who thinks that he doesn't have enough help. Pat originally asks Colorado to help Chance, who is with him, but Colorado doesn't want to help. After Pat is killed, however, Colorado becomes a deputy.

She wants to go out and help, but Colorado knows they'll just shoot Chance if she goes out there. So he tells her to throw a flowerpot through the window and then duck while he goes out there. It works, and Colorado is able to throw Chance his gun and get some of them at the same time. All three of Nathan's men are killed.

Answer: They make Consuela yell

In order to knock out Chance, the men tie a rope across the stairs and force Consuela to yell out. She does, and Chance comes charging down the stairs. They make Chance lead them to the jail to bail out Joe. Nathan's men don't know, however, that Colorado has joined Chance, and think that only Stumpy is there. They get there, and Stumpy, Chance, and Colorado shoot down the men.

Answer: Carlos

Nathan's men took Dude after the unsuccessful attempt to bail out Joe. Nathan and Chance have a deal to switch Joe for Dude. Carlos sets up this meeting for them.

Answer: He jumps Joe

While Joe and Dude are walking slowly toward their destinations (Dude to the building where Chance and Colorado are hiding and Joe to the Burdette warehouse), Dude jumps Joe and they have a fight, which Dude wins. After that, both sides start shooting.

Answer: Carlos

Carlos comes unexpectedly, because the only people who were supposed to go were Chance and Colorado. Chance wouldn't even allow Stumpy to come, although Stumpy shows up anyway. Carlos brings Chance more shells and helps out with the shooting. He brings a double-barreled shotgun.

Chance told Stumpy to stay behind, but he came anyway, and shot some men who were trying to escape.

Answer: Dynamite

Pat Wheeler was carrying a wagon-full of dynamite, which was stored near the Burdette warehouse. Stumpy threw the dynamite sticks up in the air and Chance and Dude shot them mid-air to destroy the warehouse. The men finally gave up.

Answer: Only if you mind your own business

Feathers was supposed to do a song and dance for the hotel customers, but wanted to see if Chance would dissaprove of her wearing a revealing outfit in public. He does, and she takes off the tights and he throws them out the window.
