Question 1 of 10
1. Complete the lyric (also the song's title) murmured by the demon Azrael as he possesses body after body in the film 'Fallen': 'Time...'

Answer: (4 Words)
Question 2 of 10
2. In the final scene of 'Interview with the Vampire', Lestat hijacks the boy's (Daniel's) car. As he takes the wheel and turns up the radio, we hear that great rock standard, 'Sympathy for the Devil'. Which band/artist performed this version? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. What song does the crazed caller want DJ Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood) to play for her? (No film title, sorry - too much of a giveaway.) Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In Martin Scorcese's devastating psycho-thriller-Vietnam vet-drama 'Taxi Driver', he deviates from his usual practice of using contemporary (to the plot) popular music. Only one song from the 1970s ever actually dominates the soundtrack: what is it?

Answer: (Four Words - Jackson Browne, from the album of the same name)
Question 5 of 10
5. Over the opening sequence of Robert Rodriguez's film 'The Faculty', which satirical rock song is playing? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. In the sensitively-adapted miniseries of Stephen King's epic 'The Stand', we see Larry Underwood sitting on the bonnet of a stalled car in the middle of a highway. Stretching back, as far as the eye can see, are other cars; behind him is the city of Des Moines, Iowa, burnt to the ground. What Barry McGuire song is he singing, accompanied by his own guitar?

Answer: (Three Words)
Question 7 of 10
7. Also in 'The Stand' (miniseries), to what song do Fran Goldsmith and Harold Lauder listen on their last night in Ogunquit? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. No Rock 'n Horror quiz could be complete without a mention of its namesake: 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', inarguably the biggest cult film of all time. In addition to a then-unknown but to-become-stellar cast (including Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Tim Curry and Charles Gray), a rock star whose career spans several decades appeared in a cameo role. Who is this person?

Answer: (Two Words)
Question 9 of 10
9. Although Wes Craven is not known for his use of rock music ('One, two, Freddy's after you' doesn't exactly constitute qualifying material), he uses the same Nick Cave song to brilliantly creepy effect in all three 'Scream' films. What is the song?

Answer: (Three Words - unless the killer was truly 'sinister', (s)he'd probably have this)
Question 10 of 10
10. 'Urban Legend', like many films of its ilk, likes its little in-jokes. When Joshua Jackson takes Alicia Witt for a drive through the woods and his car breaks down, one of the accessories to go on the blink is the radio. What song briefly plays? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete the lyric (also the song's title) murmured by the demon Azrael as he possesses body after body in the film 'Fallen': 'Time...'

Answer: is on my side

This Rolling Stones ballad takes on a distinctly sinister tone in the film.
2. In the final scene of 'Interview with the Vampire', Lestat hijacks the boy's (Daniel's) car. As he takes the wheel and turns up the radio, we hear that great rock standard, 'Sympathy for the Devil'. Which band/artist performed this version?

Answer: Guns 'n Roses

Of course, in the book, Lestat does not do away with Daniel - he simply gives him 'the choice I never had'. For fans yet to discover the dark BBC comedy series 'League of Gentlemen', Creme Brulee's lead guitarist is mad for this song.
3. What song does the crazed caller want DJ Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood) to play for her? (No film title, sorry - too much of a giveaway.)

Answer: 'Misty' - Erroll Garner

In 'Play Misty For Me' (1971), Eastwood is stalked by an obsessed female fan.
4. In Martin Scorcese's devastating psycho-thriller-Vietnam vet-drama 'Taxi Driver', he deviates from his usual practice of using contemporary (to the plot) popular music. Only one song from the 1970s ever actually dominates the soundtrack: what is it?

Answer: Late for the Sky

Scorcese has become famous for his pioneering use of rock and pop music both as incidental music and in lieu of score - most often to reflect the inner thoughts and feelings of his characters and to comment ironically on the action - making the soundtrack albums from his films enormously popular. Travis Bickle, the anti-hero of 'Taxi Driver', is so out of touch with his world that no contemporary music could possibly describe him.

It is only when he watches a dance contest on TV that we are afforded a musical glimpse into his lonely psyche, and Browne's ballad evokes this perfectly.

The rest of the music for the film was written by veteran composer Bernard Herrmann, who scored several Hitchcock pictures, 'Psycho' among them, and who died before 'Taxi Driver' was completed.
5. Over the opening sequence of Robert Rodriguez's film 'The Faculty', which satirical rock song is playing?

Answer: 'Another Brick in the Wall, Part II' - Pink Floyd

I asked a classful of varsity students this question after playing them the video. Only one could answer correctly (sob!).

Answer: Eve of Destruction

This enormously evocative scene is typical of the series. King himself wrote the teleplay, which may account for the quality of the adaptation (and the ironic use of music).
7. Also in 'The Stand' (miniseries), to what song do Fran Goldsmith and Harold Lauder listen on their last night in Ogunquit?

Answer: 'Don't Dream it's Over' - Crowded House

Working in the wake of a country-wide power blitz, Frannie digs out a little wind-up record player and some 7" singles. The song is utterly apt - and hangs heavy with sinister irony.

Answer: Meat Loaf

Charles Gray played Henderson in the Bond film 'You Only Live Twice', Susan Sarandon went on to shine in 'Thelma and Louise' and to win a Best Actress Oscar for 'Dead Man Walking', Tim Curry starred in such diverse films as 'Annie' and 'Charlie's Angels' and Barry Bostwick plays the Mayor in 'Spin City'. Meat Loaf has made quite a career out of film since his appearance in 'Rocky Horror', but it was not his debut: seventeen years earlier he had an uncredited role as 'boy in stands' in 'State Fair'.
9. Although Wes Craven is not known for his use of rock music ('One, two, Freddy's after you' doesn't exactly constitute qualifying material), he uses the same Nick Cave song to brilliantly creepy effect in all three 'Scream' films. What is the song?

Answer: Red Right Hand

Cave's haunting song plays both on the score and in the incidental music. 'Sinister', of course, means 'left' in Latin (as opposed to 'dexter' - 'right'). The adopted meaning is rather unfair on lefties, I feel.
10. 'Urban Legend', like many films of its ilk, likes its little in-jokes. When Joshua Jackson takes Alicia Witt for a drive through the woods and his car breaks down, one of the accessories to go on the blink is the radio. What song briefly plays?

Answer: 'I Don't Wanna Wait' - Paula Cole

Paula Cole's ballad was, of course, the theme for teen-soap 'Dawson's Creek', in which Jackson played the frustrating but adorable Pacey.
