Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sleep is a reconciling."

Answer: "A rest that peace begets."

Marianne Dashwood is very good at playing the piano and singing. This is a portion of the song that she sings (while playing the piano) at Sir John's mansion, shortly after dinner. Colonel Brandon arrives in the middle of the song, and at that point, starts to like Marianne because of her passion for music.
2. "Marianne, can you play something else? Mama has been weeping since breakfast."

Answer: "I meant something less mournful, dearest."

The first time Marianne Dashwood is seen, she is playing melancholy tunes on the piano. Elinor says this to Marianne to help her mother's grief lessen. Not heeding Elinor's request, Marianne plays another dark and dreary piece, to which Elinor says the second line.
3. "And I believe I know what key you will sing in."

Answer: "F major."

Shortly after Colonel Brandon arrives at Sir John's manor, Sir John requests that Elinor entertain them. Sir John's joke is referring to Margaret's statement at dinner, about a mystery man whom Elinor loves. Margaret also announces that his name begins with an F. Sir John and Mrs. Jennings find this quite hilarious.
4. "Margaret, that is not the point. We do not speak of such things before strangers."

Answer: "But everyone else was."

On their way home from Sir John's house, Marianne is scolding Margaret for publicizing Elinor's love life, which Marianne calls "ignorant assumptions". Margaret then tries to defend herself. Marianne sharply replies that "Mrs. Jennings is not everyone."
5. "Now, can you put your arm about my neck?"

Answer: "Allow me to escort you home."

After the Dashwood family returns to their cottage from Sir John's manor, Marianne insists on taking Margaret for a walk, despite Margaret's protest that it was going to rain. Margaret was right, and while they are running toward "the blue sky", Marianne falls and twists her ankle. Luckily, John Willoughby rides by and helps Marianne home.
6. "It is not to be borne, Elinor."

Answer: "Consider, Mama, we have nowhere to go."

Towards the beginning of the movie, Mrs. Dashwood is quite upset about Fanny and John coming to take their house away. Elinor tries to comfort Mrs. Dashwood by reminding her that they have nowhere else to go.
7. "Does she care for olives?"

Answer: "I cannot tell you."

The day after the ball, Marianne is extremely upset about Willoughby's most recent letter - that his affections had transfered to a Miss Grey with fifty thousand pounds. Mrs. Jennings tries to help by getting something to "tempt" Marianne. She asks Elinor this question, to which Elinor replies with the second quote.
8. "Which are your favorite?"

Answer: "Without a doubt, mine is 116."

Willoughby comes to visit Marianne the day after she twisted her ankle. He notices the sonnet book on the stool and inquired after who was reading them. Marianne eagerly says that it was her. Willoughby inquires after her favorite sonnet, and Marianne says 116. It turns out that it is Willoughby's favorite, too.
9. "She will be wet through when she returns."

Answer: "Thank you for pointing that out, my dear."

When the Dashwood sisters stop at the Palmer's house on their way home, Marianne asks Elinor if she could walk around in the garden to have "a moment's peace". Elinor agrees, but keeps a close eye on Marianne from the window. The minute Elinor leaves the window, Marianne heads for Willoughby's house. Elinor is obviously worried about her sister, and Charlotte proceeds to state the obvious. Mr. Palmer sarcastically replies.
10. "No voice divine the storm allayed, no light propitious shone."

Answer: "When snatched from all effectual aid, we perished each alone."

When Edward was at the Dashwood's old home, Marianne asks him to read some of Shakespere's sonnets. Marianne is not satisfied with his effort, and asks Edward to try again. Later, Elinor claims that it was because Marianne had made him nervous.
