Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1984 this actor blew me away with his performance as Antonio Salieri in Milos Forman's "Amadeus". Court Composer Salieri wanted nothing more to be a famous composer and musician. He greatly envied the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and envisioned Mozart to be an amazing young man. Upon meeting Mozart he was astounded to find a vulgar man, who humiliated Salieri on numerous occasions. This actor portrayed both the younger version and older version of Salieri. Can you tell me the name of this extraordinary actor who received a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal?

Answer: F. Murray Abraham

Both F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce were nominated for Best Actor Oscars that year, yet it was F. Murray who won the trophy. Both actors, in my opinion, did a fabulous job. I believe it was F. Murray's portrayal of the older Salieri that truly won him the Oscar. Aside from portraying Mozart, Tom Hulce is probably best known for his roles in "Animal House" and in "Parenthood".
2. This actor's performance in 1996's "Primal Fear" made me sit up and take notice. The movie was about a publicity seeking lawyer who catches a live news report about a young man being hunted by the police for the brutal murder of an archbishop. The lawyer seizes his chance, and becomes the young man's attorney. He soon comes to realize that his client, Aaron Stampler, has multiple personality disorder. It was another personality by the name of Roy, who committed the crime. What is the name of the actor who rightly deserved his Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, for his portrayal of Aaron/Roy Stampler?

Answer: Edward Norton

Edward was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in "Primal Fear". Richard Gere played his publicity seeking lawyer, Martin Vail, and John Mahoney, otherwise known as Frasier's Dad on "Frasier", played one of the lawyers in charge of convicting Aaron/Roy. Leonardo DiCaprio did not star in the movie, but the role was offered to him. I'm glad Edward got the part, as I can't see anyone else playing that part.

His role in "Primal Fear" was his first role in a movie.
3. One of my favorite movies of 1992 was "The Last of the Mohicans". The lead actor did a fantastic job of playing Hawkeye. He trained for months so that he could load and fire a rifle while running. The chemistry between him and Madeleine Stowe, who played Cora Munro was electrifying. What was the name of the actor who played Hawkeye/Nathaniel Poe?

Answer: Daniel Day Lewis

"The Last of the Mohicans" was directed by Michael Mann, and the film took my breath away. Russell played Hawkeye's adopted father Chingachgook. Eric was his half brother Uncas, and Wes played one of the villains in the film, Magua. If you can handle some of the violent scenes, this is an amazing film.
4. In 1997 two relatively unknown actors wrote and starred in "Good Will Hunting". I loved the movie, and while there were several performances that I deemed great, I chose the actor who played the lead character of Will Hunting. The way he portrayed that character made me believe that he was Will. Can you name the actor who said the memorable line, "How do you like dem apples"?

Answer: Matt Damon

Both Matt and Ben wrote the screenplay for "Good Will Hunting" and managed to walk away with an Academy Award, for Best Screenplay. Co-star Robin Williams won Best Supporting Actor at the same Academy Awards.
5. In 1989 director Peter Weir brought us "Dead Poets Society". The film focuses on a group of young men in a boarding school. The young men had a new English professor that year, and soon found that this man's teachings taught them more about English and life than any other teacher. Can you name the actor that kept me riveted to the screen with his performance as Professor John Keating?

Answer: Robin Williams

Robin Williams did a superb job as Professor Keating in this film. Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke played two of the boys who became inspired by Professor Keating. Kurtwood Smith played the father of Robert Sean Leonard's character. Kurtwood gained more exposure as playing Red Forman on TV's "That 70's Show".
6. In 1994 I was mesmerized by an actor's portrayal of Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding in "The Shawshank Redemption". The movie centers around a man who is accused of killing his wife and her lover and is sentenced to jail. While in jail he faces many obstacles and can't wait until the day when he may yet again be free. Almost right from the start he befriends Red and the two embark on a life-long friendship. Can you tell me the name of the actor who played Red?

Answer: Morgan Freeman

Over the years I have seen quite a few movies with Morgan Freeman, and I really can't think of a performance that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. Overall this movie was amazing, and the acting of Morgan and Tim just added to it.
7. In 1993 I watched a film that broke my heart - that film was "Swing Kids". It was set in Nazi Germany and centered on a small group of friends who spat on everything the Nazi's stood for, and rebelled by dancing to swing music, which was outlawed. One day, Peter was caught stealing and was sentenced to become part of the Hitler Youth. His best friend, Thomas, signed up as well, so that they could face it together, but slowly Peter realized that Thomas was believing a little too much of what was being told to them. Soon the former friends are pitted against each other, and there can only be one true winner. Can you name the actor who played Thomas?

Answer: Christian Bale

While I found both lead actors, Christian and Robert Sean to be amazing, I chose Christian as the great movie performance for this film, because after all that he did, I felt sympathy for him. This is an amazing film that I believe was overlooked.
8. In 1985 a TV movie by the name of "Anne of Green Gables" was shown and the actress who played Anne did an utterly fantastic job. "Anne of Green Gables" centers around an orphaned girl who is brought to Prince Edward Island to be adopted by a woman and her brother. It turns out that they were expecting a boy, but they soon realize that Anne is the only child for them. Can you name the actress who played Anne Shirley?

Answer: Megan Follows

All of the actresses starred in the movie, however it was Megan who played Anne in both "Anne of Green Gables" and its two sequels, "Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel" and "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story". Megan won the 1986 Gemini Award for Lead Actress, for her portrayal of Anne.
9. In 1994 this actor not only played the lead role of Victor Frankenstein in "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", but he also directed the film. I found his performance as Victor to be outstanding. The movie follows a man who loves science and medicine so much, that after his mother dies, he finds a way to stop death. He assembles a man from scratch and once he realizes that what he has done is wrong, he can't fix it. Can you name the actor who played Victor Frankenstein?

Answer: Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh never fails to catch my eye when acting or directing. Robert De Niro played the creature that Victor created, while Ian Holm played Victor's father. Ian is a well known actor who has become more so since his role in "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy as Bilbo Baggins. Tom played Victor's friend in the movie, and if you remember from the beginning of the quiz, he also played Amadeus in "Amadeus".
10. In 1994 the public was treated to a great movie performance by an actor who played Forrest Gump. The movie followed a young man, Forrest, who over the course of his life has adventure after adventure. He experiences things that most of us could never experience, at least not all in one lifetime! Can you name the actor who played Forrest Gump in the movie "Forrest Gump"?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks won an Oscar that year for his performance as Forrest. I think Tom is a phenomenal actor and could hardly leave him out of this quiz. The only problem was, which of his many films should I write about? I hope you enjoyed my quiz and while you may not agree with every choice, I hope you still had fun.
