Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A Fine Madness" is a lighthearted American comedy made in 1966, and stars which actor as leading man?

Answer: Sean Connery

Scottish actor Sean Connery set the mark for the character of Bond, James Bond. Charming, suave, debonair and deadly, Bond has become an icon of the silver screen. Connery has appeared in many films, notably as Indiana Jones' father in "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade", the thriller "The Hunt For Red October", "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and many more. Age has not withered nor custom staled this great actor.
Samson Shilltoe is the protagonist of "A Fine Madness", about a poet with writer's block and a magnetic attraction for women. He has become increasingly difficult when his 'great poem' remains unfinished. Joanne Woodward plays loyal Rhoda, a waitress who loves him. Simon agrees to see a psychiatrist to help him, but is still plagued by financial problems and women chasing him. Jean Seberg and Colleen Dewhurst also star.
Tagline: Any time... any place... at any game... Samson Shilltoe can out-fox them all!
2. The 1976 Swedish film "Ansigte Mot Ansigte" translates into English as what?

Answer: Face To Face

Written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, this film stars Liv Ullmann as Dr. Jenny Isaksson, a psychiatrist who is married to another psychiatrist. They are both good doctors and have successful practices, but Jenny is suffering from mental illness and is slowly descending into a state in which she cannot function. She gives in to a complete breakdown, as traumatic events and feelings from her past haunt her. She has to face herself finally.
Tagline: A woman's most intimate encounter with the one person she didn't know. Herself.
3. This 1994 British film stars Nigel Hawthorne in the lead role in "The Madness of..." which king?

Answer: George

Specifically, he is King George III, and the film is based on history. The madness involves a bout of dementia suffered by the real king, which is thought now to have been caused by porphyria, a blood disorder. Helen Mirren stars as Queen Charlotte in this comedic drama. The king seems to thrive in some ways during his elated state, but the rest of the court are not happy.
Tagline: His Majesty was all powerful and all knowing. But he wasn't quite all there.
4. This disturbing 1987 American film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and depicted some aspects of the Vietnam war. What was the name?

Answer: Full Metal Jacket

In the first half of the film, the focus is on boot camp in Gunnery Sgt. Hartman's 'beloved corps'. The tough sergeant focuses on the weakest recruit to ride, blaming every extra duty on his mistakes or slowness, and making him the brunt of punishment by the others. Vincent D'Onofrio put on an extra 40 pounds to play Pvt. Leonard 'Gomer Pyle' Lawrence, a large man who has trouble keeping up physically and emotionally. He eventually breaks under the strain with disastrous consequences.
The second part of the film deals with the rest of this troupe while in Vietnam. Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, and several other well cast actors portray the unit, with Modine playing Pvt 'Joker' Davis as a war correspondent for 'Stars and Stripes'. The main action revolves around the Tet offensive.
Tagline: One rifle, one gun. One for killing, one for fun.
5. Akiro Kurosawa's 1985 film "Ran" is loosely based on Shakespeare's "King Lear".

Answer: True

It is basically the same story, King Lear having three daughters, the Japanese king having three sons. The king has amassed his empire by fair means and foul, and feels that he is getting old. He wishes to pass on his kingdom by dividing it among his children, so that he may retire in peace and be an honored guest in his sons' homes. Lord Hidetora Ichimonji presents Taro, Jiro and Saburo with his plan.

The two older brothers are eager to take over, but the youngest, Saburo, tells his father he is being foolish, that this will divide the kingdom and make it weaker. Saburo is banished for insulting his father, but his predictions prove true and both the kingdom and the old king quickly descend into madness.

This is a visually brilliant film, the primary colors of each son evident in the clashes that ensue.

The old king is reduced to wandering, homeless, with his fool as companion; his demise is further enhanced by the use of kabuki makeup toward the end. Hidetora: "In a mad world, only the mad are sane."
6. This 2005 American film, directed by Alexander Barnett, depicts the strange experiences of a man who commits himself to a sanitarium. What was the name?

Answer: The Eyes of Van Gogh

Barnett also plays the protagonist, Vincent, and Lee Godart plays Paul Gauguin. The story is shown through Vincent's eyes: "Everything seen and felt is from his point of view." Vincent's mind goes through many changes and eventually deteriorates into his own private madness.
Whether Vincent was affected by other elements, such as syphilis, manic depression, thujone (the addictive drug in Absinthe), extreme sensitivity to criticism or a combination of these and other things, we don't know.
7. Dostoevski's novel "The Brothers Karamazov" and the 1958 American film involved four brothers named what?

Answer: Dmitri, Ivan, Alexei, Smerdyakov

Smerdyakov was considered illegitimate and also suffered from epilepsy; he was treated as a servant in the household. Smerdyakov idolizes his half-brother, Ivan, and quotes to him from an article he (Ivan) wrote in a magazine, "There is nothing in the world to make men love their neighbors. If there is no God, then nothing can be immoral. Everything becomes lawful, even crime..." Smerdyakov slavishly follows Ivan's rationalist philosophy, and strives to impress him.
The film had Lee J. Cobb win an Oscar as the dissolute father, Fyodr, of the four boys. Yul Brynner played Dmitri (Mischa), the eldest son, an officer and sometime gentleman. Richard Baseheart was Ivan, the jaded, cynical intellectual. William Shatner and Albert Salmi debuted in the film as Alexei (Alyosha), a monk, and Smerdyakov, respectively. Alexei is not central to the film but represents a foil in character to his depraved father. Grushenka, the vivacious beauty desired by both Dmitri and his father, is played deliciously by Maria Schell, and the staid, cold Katya by Claire Bloom. The story is intricate and much more detailed in the novel, but much of it is left out (without harm) in the film. It is also a classic whodunit. Although all four brothers agonize in many ways throughout the story, it may be Ivan who is hardest hit and touched by a certain madness.
There is a 1969 Russian film that runs 3 hours and 40 minutes, whereas the 1958 U.S. film is only about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
8. This 1962 American film starred two forever feuding actresses who managed to pull off quite a bizarre film together. What was it called?

Answer: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, two of Hollywood's great screen queens, in a film together! Bette had the primary role and was at liberty to overdo the part of Baby Jane Hudson, a former child star who has never forgotten her golden years. Joan Crawford played her sister, Blanche, who has been crippled since a car accident many years ago. Blanche had overtaken Jane as a better actress and earned a sizable reputation and hoard of money in her day, but Jane is in control of things in their old, decaying house. Jane frequently reverts to her treasured childhood moments, whereas Blanche can only look on in horror at Jane's decline and maltreatment of her.

But Blanche has a Big Secret that is finally revealed toward the end. Tagline: Sister, sister, oh so fair, why is there blood all over your hair?
9. "Madness takes its toll" is a line from a catchy song/dance in which 1975 long-running American film?

Answer: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

You remember doing the 'Time Warp', do you not? "It's just a jump to the left, And then a step to the right, With your hands on your hips, You bring your knees in tight. But it's the pelvic thrust, That really drives you insane..."
This crazy, funny cult classic has been playing continuously since 1975, somewhere in the world, usually at 'the midnight picture show'. The 'sweet Transvestite', Dr. Frankenfurter, played by Tim Curry, has made a complete mess of his mission on Earth and is to be deserted by his fellow Transylvanians, Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien) and Magenta (Patricia Quinn). Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf also star.
Richard O'Brien is responsible for the original music in the film. You'll probably know all the dialogue after about the 50th viewing - if not, the participating audience will help you. Bring toast and a water pistol.
10. Which of these is a 1975 American film about a woman released from an asylum who makes her life one long eating binge?

Answer: Criminally Insane

This film is the story of Ethel Janowski, played by Priscilla Alden. Released from a psychiatric ward into her grandmother's custody, Ethel murders the poor woman to get her key to the pantry. Ethel has a compulsive eating disorder and kills anyone who tries to stop her.

This was a low budget horror/slasher film written and directed by Nick Millard. Michael Flood, Jane Lambert and George Fowler also star.
