Tanks Evans has won the Big Z Memorial nine times. He is only out to win and show off and doesn't care for the other surfers. He doesn't take the time to teach younger surfers. If they are in the way, he knocks them out of the way and breaks their boards. His nickname is "The Shredder" and he is very arrogant and self-centered.

Lani is the attractive lifeguard that Cody is interested in after he sees her shortly after his arrival on Pen Gu island. After Cody wakes up and leaves Geek's house, he realizes that he is missing his necklace. Cody's mom doesn't care for Cody's interest in surfing and she never watches him. At the end of the movie when the film crew tells her about Cody making it to the finals at the Big Z Memorial, she starts to take more interest in his surfing.

He only has contact with Lani, his niece, until Cody comes into his life and gets him into surfing again.

Cody Maverick is a young surfer from Shiverpool, Antarctica. He is the main character and he arrives on Pen Gu Island to compete in the Big Z Memorial. He idolizes Big Z, and once he discovers that Geek is really Big Z, he becomes friends with him and gets him interested in surfing again.

Shia LaBeouf was born on June 11, 1986 in Los Angeles, California. He has appeared on television in the show "Even Stevens". He has also appeared in several movies including "Holes", "Disturbia", "The Greatest Game Ever Played" and "Transformers".

Tank has named all nine of his trophies and he cares for them. He polishes them and it seems as though he is indeed in love with them. He has named all of them: Jill, Amy, Little Susie, Miss Kitty, Helga, Theresa, Brianna, Shaniqua, and Jeannie. He plans to name his tenth trophy Leah.

Chicken Joe is from Sheboygan, Wisconsin and he started surfing on Lake Michigan. He is the one who helps Cody onto the whale so that he can make it to the competition. He is a chicken and is the only surfer that isn't a penguin. His character is very carefree and he often seems to be in a daze.

After he wins the Big Z Memorial, he doesn't even realize that he wins until someone asks him how he feels.

When Lani takes Cody to Geek's house to get help figuring out what exactly is wrong with Cody, Geek discovers that Cody has stepped on a fire urchin. The camera crew gets an interview with the fire urchin that Cody steps on. His name is Ivan and he says that Cody did more than just step on him. He shows the camera crew his broken and missing spikes.
