Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film, released in 1990, has a predictably interesting tagline. Which of the following is correct?

Answer: Actually, all three were used!

One tagline just couldn't cover it so they used all three. The movie, on the surface, dealt with love and loneliness and "being different" but it was multi-layered. It took a jab or two at suburbia, society's tendency towards blatant fickleness, etc. My opinion, after watching the film, is that the film was a curious mixture of "Frankenstein" and "The Elephant Man" in a contemporary setting. Tim Burton, the director, is a master at pulling off startling visuals combined with a heartfelt story.
2. This film marked the final appearance of a veteran (and well known) actor. He passed away a few years after finishing the movie but never was seen in another. Who was he?

Answer: Vincent Price

Vincent Price died in 1993 at the age of 82. While he eventually became totally associated with horror films, his earlier work was much more diverse. In fact, in 1944 he was Oscar nominated for his work in "Laura". In real life he was a very cultured fellow, quite the art collector and wine connoisseur.

His recognizable voice has been heard since his death-notably in a film called "Arabian Nights" in 1995 and, of course, in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. But the last time he actually appeared, physically, on screen was in "Scissorhands".
3. "Edward Scissorhands" was the movie sandwiched between the releases of two others by gifted director Tim Burton. Which came just before and which came just after?

Answer: "Batman" was just before and "Batman Returns" was just after

The "Batman" franchise got off to a good start, mostly due to Burton's involvement. The years of the movies mentioned are: "Beetlejuice" (1988), then "Batman" (1989), followed by "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), then "Batman Returns" (1992) and finally "Tim Burton's The Nighmare Before Christmas" (1993). Tim Burton was a Disney animator before his first film came out. That movie was "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" in 1985.
4. The initial idea of "Edward Scissorhands" was NOT that it would be a motion picture that might be labelled a "fantasy/romance". At first it was thought the project should be what?

Answer: a musical

Hmmm. Thank you to IMDB.com for that information! I suppose the elements of an interesting musical are there but it was very suited to the format as presented.
5. Edward, as per the story, was a creation of a pretty eccentric inventor who lived in an odd castle. A very remote and interesting place it was, one only that Avon Lady would both find and venture into. But the inventor died. Was the inventor's name ever given?

Answer: No

Vincent Price's character died of what looked like a heart attack very early on. When the credits rolled he was only dubbed "The Inventor."
6. I'm always intrigued by just who was considered to play the part that was finally assigned to the one we see on screen. In Hollywood, I am sure many names get bandied about but it usually comes down to a select few candidates. In "Edward Scissorhands" Tom Cruise was a prime selection for the role (but he turned it down). There was another actor who almost got the part. Which of these actors was it?

Answer: Robert Downey, Jr.

Downey was a very serious "almost" but opted to work on getting his Oscar-nominated role in "Chaplin" (1992). Pitt was mostly unknown at the time and Wood would have been a mere 9 years-old in 1990.
7. Was "Edward Scissorhands" nominated for any Academy Awards?

Answer: yes

It was, but only one. Ve Neill and Stan Winston were up for Best Make-Up (but failed to win). Johnny Depp WAS nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance (he lost, too). As of mid-January 2004 Mr. Depp has never been a nominee for an Oscar but, and I truly hope I'm right, his day will eventually come that way. Later note: YAY! As of 1-27-04, Johnny got his first nomination. Will he win it? Probably not but at least it's a start in the best direction!
8. In the movie who said: "Sweetheart, you can't buy the necessities in life with cookies!"?

Answer: Bill Boggs

Bill said that to his wife (the Avon Lady) Peg. Edward had moved in with them and was trimming hedges and cutting hair left and right but hadn't earned a nickel doing so. Peg, who was ever the sweetheart, thought it was enough that Edward got cookies when he did things for people. Bill (played by Alan Arkin) staunchly disagreed.

The conversation was the impetus to setting Edward out into the world to make money, which didn't turn out to be the most sensible course for him.
9. The neighborhood where Edward moved into the Boggs' home was unique, to say the least. Which of these best describes it?

Answer: The houses in the film were from a real community in Florida.

It really was an actual street in Florida. They DID repaint the houses for effect and none of the homeowners ever selected those garish tones (and I'm sure that, after the shoot, those awful colors went back to normal in a jiffy).
10. In ending on a bittersweet note: Kim, who is now wildly intrigued, and probably in love with Edward, asked him to do something to which his sad reply was that he couldn't. What did she ask him to do?

Answer: to hold her

Edward loved Kim but the differences between them were obviously vast. To hold her would be to hurt her, and that was the last thing he wanted to do. I really liked "Edward Scissorhands" and I hope you enjoyed this quiz about it, too.
